Two New Gears of War 2 Documentaries

"When you blast something, you want to see lots of chunks" This quote - directly from the video above - is going to haunt me in my dreams for a very long time. In fact, I'm actually going to put a word of caution on both of these videos. Not because of the violence, but because if you don't want to know anything about the game, you might want to skip these two. They have tons of information regarding the new weapons and finishing moves you'll find in Gears 2. Second video after the jump.

I think I just had a Gears of Wargasm. This game will, without a doubt, be the most Epic ever. Cliffy B...Cliff Blezinski may be a prick, but he can make good games. Also, guess what? I'm 19 years old, and I like violence. Yes, it's true, the more gruesome the better. Have I ever murdered someone? No. Have I ever done drugs? No. Have I ever been arrested? No. Stop ruining everyone else's good time with your stupid psychological interpretations of everyone who posts a comment here. Why don't you take the rod out of your ass, and don't watch the damn videos if you don't like the violence. Gears 2 will rock!

@PhilESkyline: I agree, I don't like how the violence has become alot more personal and brutal. It's sort of running down a bad road but then again the game itself is still very good and you don't have to do that if you don't want. It's not like you can't have the odd game just suited for mindless violence anyway as I doubt titles like God of war 3, Ninja gaiden 2 etc. are permissable just because they are not shooters.

@raviadso: An excellent point. I've found the "light gun effect" often in many games, and every time it's a turnoff. The GTA series in particular is terrible for this feeling.
Then there are the games where the footsteps are louder than the gunshots.
Perhaps better sound design would help more games out...I know that the loud weapons, the shouting, and the crazy camera gave Gears that "INYOURFACE!" feeling, and in that environment, over the top gore is just the icing on the cake.
Tbh, it's one of the only shooters I've played that made me feel like I was actually shooting.

@PhilESkyline: Its a game. Not trying to be a prick but I hate it how these guys are passionate about the game they are building and people are going to rip on it for being too violent. Plenty of other sources of media are just as violent too and show far worse things. As for the devs themselves being too into violence I think its really cool to see devs that into their game. I doubt they are blood thirsty warmongers in everyday life though.
Anyways, awesome videos. I can't wait for this game to come out.

Just to add a bit--
a lot of games just feel so weightless. Guns feel like they could float away and their rata-tat-tat just feels like an indicator you are shooting instead of really emulating what it would be like to be there firing a gun of immense power, noise and kick. So far Gears looks like it is taking that realism seriously which is what made the first game so good.

@TwilightKing:
Although it is a game it's foundation is built upon violence and destruction. Those are the main "selling points."
Just because you're passionate about something doesn't mean it's positive. It just means you have a strong desire to see it come to past whether it's good or bad.
If you believe it's fun to shoot, stab, and kill people in a video game is it fun to hear about it or see it in real life? Most would say no because people really get hurt.
Why would you want to be apart of something that promotes violence? What does that say about your mindset? Do you find most of your fun when being involved with violence?

To the people on here that don't approve of the violence in games/society...Why did you watch the videos which explain a game that you clearly have issue with? Do you go online and purposefully seek out things that you find disturbing, just to point out that you don't like them?
Serious question, I'd like to know. I love hearing all of the differing opinions on these game issues, but some times I just don't understand what drives people to say certain things.

@PhilESkyline:
Video games bring us new experiences-- experiences that we could not or would not normally have. We walk on the moon, race cars at lethal speeds, turn into rockstars, save planets from destruction. Only the interactivity is different from movies that do the same thing.
I'm smart enough not to think you are more than a front-- a black or white in a world without nuance; but there is something fun about saving the universe. There is something even more fun about really feeling grounded in a visceral scenario that you can almost feel. Violent or not that is the intention.
If you don't want to blow fictional pieces of flesh from a fictional alien species in a fictional war in a video game that is a work of fiction then good for you. There are games like Viva Pinata for you.
Some people, like myself are shocked and horrified by real violence but like being the hero and the visceral, adrenaline-bursting sensation of fictionalized violence. Does that mean I am a sociopath? I work in a mental health facility. I take care of people all day long and empathize for those that have been beaten up, raped and destroyed by either violence or the threat of violence. Are you saying that liking violent video games says something about my character that the attending psychiatrist should know about? Am I morally flawed and a danger to society and my peers for liking to have those experiences?
OR, is it possible that video game violence is just that-- entertainment. Maybe you cant understand the difference between "promoting fictional violence" and flat out "promoting violence"
Either way I am done debating. All you bring is flaming and judgment to a group of people that largely disagrees with you. In my book that is trolling.

I totally agree that video games bring us new experiences. But should all experiences be experienced?
Violence by definition is negative and is linked to many other forms of negativity.
I believe what you call entertainment speaks volumes about your character. What you get enjoyment/fulfillment out of is a direct expression of who you. If not why would you be involved in something that is not the true you? Living a double life, or a form of escape from reality?
I know posting anything that opposes the "kingdom" people have built would cause trouble. People don't enjoy others who challenge and comment on things they are deeply rooted in. It's human nature...

Eh... let's stop the anti-violence crusade in Kotaku, Shall we? Besides, Gears 1 has an option where you can easily turn the blood and gore OFF...
I did it once before playing multi-player. I was annoyed when there was a huge cluster of people and I was fighting to survive, blinded by huge splotches of splattered screen blood. I then turned the gore off in the options menu. Upon returning, the game was comical. It was almost like they were play-fighting. Chainsaw animations were the best. The victim stands there waving his arms like a kid in a middle-school play, while the aggressor holds the chainsaw to his shoulder. After a second, the victim just falls over. All of the death animations seemed strange, especially when the victim would normally be blown/sliced into pieces...
The game was still fun though, and didn't lose any of it's appeal (in fact, for me, it added a new funny gameplay mode). While the gore and blood is a very strong part of the game, it doesn't render it unplayable should you turn that gore off.

@PhilESkyline: No I personally do not get off to violence and I would never ever let anyone without a high maturity level play this game. That does not mean I don't love this game and yes it might be a lesser game without this violence. It is entertaining and just because I think that does not put me in a mindset of a murderer. This is an inanimate object that has no past and serves no other purpose.
However, I really don't understand what is so wrong about them liking violence in video games. Studies have been shown that being violent in a video game actually lets you release some anger.
I see the point you are trying to make. You have to realize though that violence isn't some fantasy for these guys or anyone who enjoys these games. Having violent tendencies is a part of human nature. We are rooted in the hunting and fighting nature. Since way back when that is what we did to survive. I also think that humans have evolved enough to see the difference and can commit violent acts in a video game and it have no affect on them in the real world.

This game is gonna be amazing, not just for the graphics and gameplay, but for the amount of weapons, new abilities. That'll setup so many fun and hilarious situations online. That we the players will exploit in ways the designers hadn't even thought of.
Already I'm thinking of flamethrower traps. Stand near the side of a doorway or entrance and wait for someone to run by. Then put the flamethrowe on. Waaa! I also get to quote movie lines through my headset, like "I'M GONNA TAKE A FLAMETHROWER TO THIS PLACE!" or "BURN BABY BURN!!!" Oh the fun times ahead.

@raviadso: I like you. A+ post. Will read again. /lame eBay reference
Good to see some intellegence out there for a change.
My spin below:
For me personally, the violence and gore are the selling points for the Gears series. It holds more realism (even in the scifi of it) than any game I've ever played in similar genres or FPS games more specifically. Don't get me wrong I love games like COD and the Halo series, but there is just something so satisfying about knowing that bullet you have aimed at BubbaQAnnoying is going to make his head explode.
It's amazing to think; I am a friendly, passive, individual. I cry at sappy movies, I enjoy boring nights just sitting and reading books with my wife. I detest violence in real life. I am "entertained" by fake violence because it is just that, fake. I was taught the difference between these things. I have a common grasp on reality, and no mental disorders. Yet some would say I am sick for playing a game like this. I think main stream media is sick, but games and movies get far more flack. I would rather a child have to deal with some fake violence and have an understanding for it, than having to witness atrocities on the news that could not be made understandable to them.
So how shall I leave you?
If I met an individual in real life I would not hesitate to shake his/her hand, do a random act of kindness, or possibly just a friendly, sincere smile and a hello. I would also end with a friendly goodbye.
If I met that person on this game I would enjoy watching their body explode into a million tiny bits as I flip through their corpse. I would also end with a friendly good game.
Two completely different worlds, with two very similar endings. The big deal is amazingly most of us can distinguish the difference between reality and fantasy. Those who can't shouldn't have access to these things and should be receiving metal help. I could go further but this was suppose to be like three lines long... whoops. :P
Peace in reality

I watched these yesterday morning and this morning on my Xbox 360. I found the video about creating the sounds for the game to be really interesting. The part where Cliffy comes into the sound director's office and starts pretending to mow down people with the chain gun as the different chain gun noises were played for him made me laugh.
But it also made me realize that's the level of enthusiasm and involvement required to make a kick ass game.

Many guys like seeing that their actions make an impact in the world. Like seeing that impact. Guys will buy ten watermelons with the single-minded purpose of destroying them. They will smash them with hammers, blow them up, drive over them, stab knives into them, punch and kick them, throw them, shoot them, whatever.
Guys like affecting change in their environment. Some guys are more hands-on than others. It is guys, not the girls (as a general rule) who will stuff firecrackers in anthills and burn holes in leaves with a magnifying glass.
There's also something built into guys that promotes "dukin' it out". In decades past, boys played cowboys and indians, have stormed the castle, rescued the princess, commanded armies, took over strongholds. They "killed" their friends. But they knew the difference between "killed" and killed. They knew that aiming a stick was a world of difference from aiming a gun.
The vast majority of people have a healthy understanding of the difference between simulated and real violence and death, and guys are no exception. The reason that Cliffy and company can be so cavalier when talking about gory finish moves and chunks flying off of bad guys is because it is safely within the realm of simulation. I bet these same people would be horrified at being confronted with real-life atrocities. They know that the damage done is to simulated characters. These same people might well take a bullet for their freaking cat because they couldn't bear for it to suffer. You can have an incredibly sensitive heart and still enjoy watching video game heads explode like cantalopes.
Video games do little in the way of emotionally jading people to real violence. Case in point: A month ago, I was facilitating paintball games for a Jr. High camp. There were some kids that thought they were all "Big Man on Campus" because they "owned noobs" at Halo. The first time they were shot at, they just huddled together in a bunker and refused to get out until they got shot. So much for all that "extensive" experience and knowledge.
