Wii Music Blares Across America On Oct. 20
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 10:00 AM on September 19, 2008
Nintendo is hoping that lightning strikes thrice with the October 20th release of Wii Music in North America, the rhythm game that, according to the company, "builds on that inclusive legacy" of Wii Sports and Wii Fit and translates into runaway sales. With more than 60 instruments, including guitar, drums, dog and cheerleader, and over 50 songs, Wii Music aims to bring music performance to the masses.
While the press release highlights the Wii Music elevator pitch, the newly updated product page gives us a look "Beyond the Jam." The playback mode lets you review your jam session with dramatic camera angles and the tone quiz "tests your musical ear by giving you challenges, like putting note-playing Miis in order from lowest to highest pitch."
And how could we ever forget that Wii Music will let us drum in tandem with the Wii Balance Board? We could never forget, is the answer.

The game will sell. People will have fun with it for an hour to two tops, realize how lame it is and puts it away with the Wii until the next Wii-gimmick games comes out. Or another likely scenario. People will buy this get its home and realize WTF?!? This 'aint Rock Band!

Third parties are constantly complaining that they can't compete with Nintendo's games.
So, Nintendo have (inadvertently) given them a chance to compete with a less-than-impressive first-party holiday line-up.
Now lets see what happens. Will third-parties be able to take advantage of the situation, or will they just keep pumping out shovelware and wonder why their games don't shift all that many units?

I really wish I could care about Nintendo anymore.. I really do. They just make it so impossibly hard for me to do so.
Eventually, they're going to run out of "casual" gamers to entice... and by that point, everyone will have jumped ship to Sony/Microsoft.

For some bizzare reason, it reminds me of that old Powerpuff Girls episode where a mime attacks and sucks out all the color, and the girls all play a song to restore color everywhere.
And then beat the shit out of the mime.
The game reminds me of the song part, specifically. Although if it allowed you to beat the shit out of people who keep screwing the song up, I'll take three copies.

It's going to be interesting to see how well this does, especially since it's a glorified toy. Wii Sports Resort is going to do well because everyone has played Wii Sports that owns a Wii and loves it. Wii Fit did well because it's a fitness game, and America loves easy things that make them feel like they're getting into shape.
Wii Music? You can play a glorified imaginary version of an instrument along to all of your favorite midi jams. Don't worry about rhythm! Don't worry about skill! Just have fun!
Problem with that is, the whole fun part is probably gonna wear off in minutes.

So while Guitar Hero and Rock Band get songs from ACDC, The Who, Aerosmith, Metallica, etc., Wii Music gets classics like "Yankee Doodle" and "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star."
I understood what Nintendo was doing for the other wii games. Wii Sports was to introduce everyone what the Wi can do (and was a great party game), WIi Fit tried to get people more interested in fitness, and Wii Play was... to give you an extra remote.
But what's the point of Wii Music? TO make yourself look more like an idiot? If I want to pretend to be playing music, I at least want to use something that resembles an instrument.

I doubt any of those games will score higher than 80% on Gamerankings, Sonic'll be okay not great, de Blob'll be quite good, Samba Da Amigo wont work with Wii controls, neve heard of Line Rider, and Harvest Moon ill be quite good. Mushroom Men i dont really know
The thing is that Wii owners have far longer, and harsher game droughts than 360/PS3 owners, but theyve always had one hardcore big hitter to make up for it each Christmas, and this year, it aint coming
There will be some quite good games, but quite good doesnt cut it after the drought wii owners have suffered, especially when other formats get GoW2, R:FOM 2, Little Big Planet, Fable 2, Mirrors Edge etc

@Caseus: Really? I've been playing Nintendo since the NES, and I don't feel alienated. I'm happy that they're expanding their markets. My grandmother now has a Wii because I let her play Wii Sports on mine and she loved it. My nieces and nephews enjoyed it greatly. They enjoyed Mario Galaxy as well, and probably wouldn't have gotten into video games if it wasn't for Nintendo's little white box.
Seriously people, if the fact that Nintendo focuses on someone other than you freaks you the fuck out, put the controller down, take a step back, and just breathe. Nintendo's been a business for over a hundred years, they know what they're doing.
Mostly. (Virtual Boy, I'm staring at you)
If casuals INFURIATE!!!!! you, try this: Try using their enjoyment of the Wii as a springboard to get them hooked on more mainstream games.
"I really liked Zelda."
"Well, have you tried Okami? It's a different setting, but it's same enough that you'd enjoy it"
And you go from there. Seriously. Not that hard.

honestly, this just seems like an updated mario paint to me, and people seem to love that thing. so what's the deal? if you ask me, i think people are taking themselves way too seriously, and are too afraid that someone might look at them like they have some sort of mental issue.

I don't recall him ever coming out as being this huge gamer, let alone an advocate for gaming. Personally though, I can see myself really enjoying this. I can recall countless times I've found myself playing air drums or air guitar while at work or in my car.
On the GH note, I picked up GH when it first came out, and SERIOUSLY, those guitars were tiny. It's hard to look more ridiculous than that, but I remember me and a buddy of mine rocking out to ROTM in GH2 with our tiny lil Gibson SG guitars. Sure, with RB, they're starting to get bigger and not so ridiculous looking, but if you've ever played a real guitar, you *know* those things are still a lot smaller than their real counterpart.
I can definitely see what you're saying about people hitting their limit on how dumb they want to look, though. I guess I just have no shame haha. :P

Oh if only the rest of Wii owners had other options other then Wii Music. If only there existed a Rock Revolution, Rock Band, or some kind of Guitar Hero to play instead on Wii.
If only like Wii Fit, it wasn't a mandatory purchase, punishable by death in a freak Fat-Plumber-To-The-Head-Mafia-Attack.
Truly, this is worse then when Sony created EyeToy: Groove or Kinetic and forced everyone to buy and shake their arms like fools to the music. Oh those horrible days when Sony would whip you if you didn't go along with their EyeToy games.
If you really don't like Wii Music, get over it and stop talking about it. Yelling at it, calling it horrible, insulting those who may like it, is clearly doing nothing to help your cause of getting rid of it. It might actually be helping to promote it with all this talk and links for Wii Music on Google and how they bring up results.
I'm not a fan of Wii Music, nor was I fan of any EyeToy music game. I ignored the latter, I'll ignore the first and life will be just fine as I play Smoke On The Water or Foxy Lady on Playstation 2/3.

My question? Why isn't this a subgame in something to the effect of Wii Paint? I bet that it would be supremely more popular than Mario Paint, what with not having to buy the extra accessory and being able to move your hand like you were holding an actual brush or spray paint.

Since Nintendo didn't really talk about anything memorable since Miayamoto first conducted a virtual orchestra, then it's safe to say that this game, for some time, was off their priority radar as well.

@neo177117: They said they're working on a new Zelda. Too bad it'll be pushed until it's a launch title for the Nintendo Uhz.

I pretty sure the only thing more annoying than the fact that this is really coming out(mind you thats not a lot of stuff, Hugh Jackman comes to mind) are the promo's that are going to follow it.

@boringjob2: Here's that preview saying it's good (note: not a review, there aren't any reviews yet afaik), from 1Up:
Surprisingly, I like Wii Music.
Maybe that's not surprising to you, but it certainly caught me off-guard. When Nintendo revealed its upcoming music game at E3 (if indeed it can be called to be a game; creator Shigeru Miyamoto regards it more as a toy), I was skeptical. When I actually played it, I was even more doubtful. It lacked focus or structure; it was, in short, fairly pointless.
But Nintendo has a slightly more fleshed-out version of the game on display this weekend at Penny Arcade Expo, and despite this version sporting only a few modest tweaks, I think it has won me over. The difference: A sense of purpose.
Don't get me wrong I don't think they're going to say it's the greatest thing since sliced bread - that preview's sounding like maybe a B, not an A - but that's at least one fairly positive preview which suggests it might also get a fairly positive review.
@McClain: Pretty sure that if Wii Music has worldwide sales less than most of the games you named, Nintendo will be disappointed. Given that these titles typically last much much longer than other games, they may not be too bothered about competition in the release window either.
Obviously time will tell; maybe Wii Music will flop. They can't be right all the time...
...but then again, @neo177117: If Nintendo had listened to advice like yours, the system they'd have released instead of Wii would have continued their downward trajectory to secure a worse third place than GameCube managed, and they wouldn't be swimming in cash that's currently bankrolling (among others) the next Zelda and Mario games... I agree they could do to make more games apart from those (and Pikmin and whatever else they might be doing) but that certainly does not mean they need to make fewer games like Wii Music.

@TheHeeyyy: Speak for yourself. I'm interested in seeing how this works.
Expand your boundaries, Kotaku fans. You might find some interesting stuff in those "non-games".
