Bionic Commando Rearmed Success 'Hasn't Sunk In' For Capcom Japan
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:40 PM on September 20, 2008
Interesting comment from Bionic Commando (the big, new one) producer Ben Judd. Speaking with Videogamer about the success of Bionic Commando Rearmed, he says:
It's a game that's been done by a Japanese publisher so even though it's doing extremely well, that information hasn't really sunk in to their side. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Mega Man 9. That right there could set our internal strategy. If the Mega Man 9 stuff is successful we might see more retro games like that. But if ultimately Rearmed is more successful, they could come back and say 'people really want these high def, high quality remixes, they don't want just the old stuff'. It'll be interesting to see what happens.
Sure we can find room in our hearts - and our wallets - for both styles of re-release, Capcom.

@Pattypie:
Agreed! But SEGA needs to re-release a few of their other games in HD:
*Golden Axe II: Revenge of Death Adder (Best Golden Axe game that never made it to a console!)
* Altered Beast
*Last Battle
*Anything "Shinobi"
Sorry, I'm SEGA/Genesis fan!

The question is a little faulty because BC: Rearmed really IS a re-release whereas MegaMan 9 is an entirely new game. Unless, of course, the question is actually "do people want HD re-releases or new retro games?"

TAKE A HINT SEGA. DO WIT SONIC or even Jet Set Radio or something totally awesome.
Capcom has been raking up the gold with these revisits and more companies should take notice, ports aren't good enough anymore and a new sequel retro style is awesome.

I'd call Re-armed more of a 'tribute' title then a 're-release'. Calling it a re-release implies they just updated the graphics and sound of the game.
Anyone who has actually played re-armed can tell you that they did MUCH, MUCH more. I'd like to see more titles get the same attension as re-armed, and not just a HD re-release.

@Struct09: Me as well...There's no reason we can't have both. It's up to Capcom (and the different publishers) what they want to be retro-made or build a new one from the ground up. Mega-Man 9 is a good touch I must say. Especially for people (like me) who have fond memories of the blue-bomber when we were kids...
@DontTouchMyDaughterYouFilthyGaijin: You do realize "HD" gaming is not another platform. It's a resolution which may or may not be implemented. You can play an "HD" game on a normal tv y'know. And "HD" gaming doesn't have to be brown. Where did you get that idea?
@bigman88zz: Yep. Viva Pinata as well. Ratchet & Clank, etc as well.
@shrek187: Hell yeah! Streets of Rage (Bare Knuckle in Japan) was awesome! Not sure how they'd make a new one though. As I think a lot of people aren't really into beat 'em ups nowadays anymore...

HD remixes are the way to go.
I mean, how many people out there actually played JOUST for more than 5 or 10 minutes?
Most people who own a 360 or PS3 probably have them hooked up to a widescreen HDTV.
Who the HELL wants that screen to enlarge pixels that are 10-20 years old???
Not me.
If I want to revisit memory-lane with old titles, I want to revisit them in HD like Bionic Commando.
Trust me...those "classics" don't really age as well as your memory thinks they do.
As a kid I LOVED my Intellivision.
The problem is, after playing Intellivision Lives...I realized they looked and played better in my memory than they do today.
It's the natural evolution of technology.
I think if a company does a full-on remake ala BC, even a picky gamer like myself would actually want to revisit the past.

People saying "I'll buy both!" are missing the point: if you buy the one that's essentially a romhack that could have been made almost for free, no one's going to want to spend a huge wad of cash on much higher quality remakes like Bionic Command Rearmed. If it's voting with your dollars, a lot of people seem prepared to vote for a third term of Bush.

I can't really be against either concept, though I'd prefer more games in the style of BC:R. Don't get me wrong, Mega Man 9's super-retro direction is cool, but it seems less cool to me than BC:R's incredible overhaul - which includes so much new stuff and simply killer soundtrack. But if it comes down to what Capcom and other companies do with such projects in the future, I think there is plenty of room for both styles...

You know what everyone is forgetting? Mega Man Powered Up. That was Capcom's 3D rendering of Mega Man in a 2D setting. Who bought that? Or what about that Mega Man X remake for the PSP as well? Maverick Hunters I think it was called. Both had a Bionic Commando: Rearmed feel to them. Capcom has been testing the waters for some time now and this is their next test for style. Besides, this is just the artistic direction for ONE game, so I wouldn't worry about this being a trend for all games. And just to throw this out there, I bought an HDTV for entertainment, which Mega Man 9 will be.

The genius of Mega Man 9's aesthetic is that if it wasn't in the same 8-bit style as before, we wouldn't be talking about it. Between Mega Man 8 and now, there have been countless Mega Man games in essentially 16 or 32-bit and they didn't make much of a splash outside of the core fanbase. In comparison, Mega Man 9 has everyone talking and reminiscing. This will translate to sales because, at the end of the day, it's the gameplay we love about Mega Man, not the graphics.
I'm not advocating going out and making 8-bit arcade games for every series, but I think Capcom's move succeeded in revitalizing a dusty, tired series and making us remember why it was so damn fun in the first place. Before all of the Net-Navi nonsense, before all the Cyber Elves, before all of the pretentious, emo and melodramatic X games, we had a game that perfected the side scroller. It's time to go back to basics and recognize what make this work in the first place.

@bigman88zz: there's a simple reason as to why to deevolve: gameplay.
when Megaman "grew up" from the 8-bit, to the 16-bit, to the 32-bit, he became less responsive due to all the additional frames of animation. (Megaman 8 for the 32 bit consoles is the worst offender here). in the NES titles, Megaman's jumping was zippy and allowed you to have more elaborate dodging maneuvers. (various incarnations of the Yellow Devil, here's looking at you!)
as much as I liked BC:Rearmed, I feel that the HD & polygon re-polish hurt the game. the Bionic Arm's hit detection was suddenly spotty. "oh, you didn't hit the right part of that spotlight, sorry, please try again!" I LOVED BC on the NES, and was psyched for the new release, but have since put it down, just because I got sick of "missing" grapple points.

I mean, when we ask for 2.5d remakes, that's all we're asking for: the leap to the fake extra dimension. That's where our request starts and ends. Not any sense of, you know, aesthetics or anything. The point of graphical upgrades isn't about... uh... graphics...

Yeah, as interesting as the idea is with Mega Man 9, I'm with ca$h on this. It's a waste of pixels on my 1080p tv to even play MM9. If they actually made a NES version (not just the cart and a box, but a playable NES version on my NES), then I might consider. But I want HD remixes. But ultimately I am torn on the issue. Because I don't want to stifle any old school revisit.

@fillerbunny9: I think BC:R argument is only because you played the orginal so much more than the remake. Hard to compete with that level of skill and the 'selective' memory we all have. Honestly, there is nobody left who REALLY appreciates dying all the time - this arcade style of playing is dead.
In addition - even for Mega Man - it is not the frames of an animations or the quality to blame, but that they changed the gameplay - the often spoken about chargable shot is just one of the things they changed.
It is not a technical but a design decision how slow a game feels. E.g. Bionic Commando fells sluggish on purpose (not being able to jump being a main reason). So let me rephrase the real question:
If you get IDENTICAL gameplay in HD graphics, what would you chose? THAT is the ONLY question to answer. And let me restate that: There is no technological reason why they can't combine the original gameplay with good graphics.
