i just explained why. for a lot of games, especially high-profile ones, games tend to be sold out if they're not pre-ordered. there is also the experience of getting the game at midnight which personally i love.

its all about getting the game you want as fast as possible. nobody wants to be stuck out in the cold like a rrod'd guy because a game we wanted is sold out because we were too lazy to preorder it.

and i don' rent games at all because im smart enough to know which games i want and which games i dont want. but with certain games people just know that they are going to like them. gta4 was another example of that. either you get the feeling of "omg i want this now" or you don't. reviews come only after the game has already come out and reviews (especially gamespot's often tend to ruin parts of the story so i try not to read those until after ive finished games that i have already pre-ordered, but for games that people are not sure about (merc's 2 for example) then you wait for the reviews, because that's what they're for.

so the risk is necessary if you want the game within the first week and you don't want it to be sold out, reviews for high profile games often tend to divulge parts about the story nobody wants to know, and as for renting, i learned from ffx that if you rent a game you really like, its a pain in the ass to have to return it when i could have just used that money to buy the game. for a game i know i'll like, the 5-8 dollars i spend on renting could be put towards the actual game.

As mascots go, you're right, it doesn't get any cooler: it's not too cute, cartoony or childish, it's completely original, it can be modified ad infinitum without losing its identity and recognisability, it was born on the PS3 (unlike, say, everyone's favourite Lombax), and it has come to embody a whole conception of gaming as a positive, fun community experience.

So yeah, I'm sure Sony will run with Sackboy/girl/zilla well after Christmas and in the coming years. They've made it clear that they hoped it would become one of the PS3's defining titles.

For one this game will be near impossible to be really bad because of the fact that its taking what people want out of games and simplifying it. FUN.

Sometimes, people make games good, but not fun and some people make fun games that are bad.

However, this game is taking the FUN of games and bringing creativity to console owners. Something that has yet to be done on a console on this kind of level. Anything similar before LBP has been minimal and insignificant when it comes to the gameplay of the game. However, with LBP, the gameplay is pretty much what you want it to be.

You dont have to be creative. The game industry has proven that a very small amount of people can generate content to please the masses.

MGS4 had a team of around 250-300 people and they pleased over 3 million gamers.

LBP will have thousands and possibly tens of thousands of people making levels and minigames.

I played LBP today, at the Manchester demo. Here's my review from ThreeSpeech:

I've been today, though I had to stand around for a while as it didn't open till 2pm.

It's run by an enthusiastic bunch who are neither Sony nor Media Molecule, so there's little point grilling them. Though there's plenty of PS3s, the sound is off so they can play generic club music. Hmmph.

The PS3s are not running the final Gold version it appears - there's debug information in the corner and still some significant flaws in the pod and during creation. Gameplay is rock solid though.

And it was gameplay that was the surprise - the levels can be astonishingly sophisticated considering the simple toolset, and some are very long. There's loads of hidden stuff to find, toys to play with, but the biggest (and best) impression I was left with was that the levels are far from trivial - some have really hard sections.

It's really, really impressive, but a note of caution: there is a limit to the "everything is made with the built-in tools" claim. The levels certainly seem to be made (and are editable) with the built-in tools, but many of the objects in those levels, and the decorations you can apply to your own objects, certainly CANNOT be created in-game.

That classic LBP object from many videos, the bowl of chillis, is a case in point - you can't make the bowl; you can't make the chillis. What you CAN make is almost any shape cut-out, extruded to one of four thicknesses. You can stick any number of these together in three planes, apply different materials to them and even edit the position of each and every corner node... but only in the one plane. You can't make a sphere, or a cylinder that isn't end-on (if you see what I mean).

Having said that, the editting tools are hard enough to use successfully as it is. I really don't see how full 3D object mesh creation could be delivered to the masses in a simple form.

In summary, a really good game that's going to have an extraordinary future once people with real skills start using it. In that respect, it's really a lot closer to modelling clay than Lego.
