Far Cry 2 Comes In Four Multiplayer Flavors
Posted by Mike Fahey at 1:20 AM on September 20, 2008
Eurogamer today hosted another of their LiveText chat sessions, this time around putting Far Cry 2 producer Louis-Pierre Pharand under the spotlight to answer questions about the fiery sequel. During the chat, Pharand spoke a bit about the multiplayer modes included in the game. The standard Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch modes will be joined by Capture The Diamond, which is like capture with flag only you're tasked with capturing a magical mushroom diamond instead, and a variation on VIP they've christened Uprising. He also discussed persistency, which will apparently be contained to the match or series of matches you are involved in, much like Shadowrun.
"We decided that all persistency will occur within a match or a define series of matches," Pharand added. "That way, gamers will have a taste of all our great guns quickly. You will get upgrades within classes and it will allow you to be more tactical in your progression, depending of the type maps you play."
Hmm. Wasn't a bit fan of Shadowrun. Then again, Shadowrun didn't come with acres of grassy plains to set fire to, so it balances out.

The only thing that could make this game better is co-op.
And the maps made using the map maker being usable in co-op.

Oct - Nov is going to be a bitch. Luckily I'm going to the US next month, gonna pick up some cheap games while I'm over there.

@Pandaschreck: because it's being developed by Ubi Montreal, who made the excellent, and in many ways superior to the original Crytek game, Far Cry: Instincts.

Heh. Shadowrun. I'm sorry, but how can he compare Far Cry 2 to Shadowrun. They butchered the hell out of Shadowrun by turning it from an awesome RPG, to a Counter-Strike wannabe piece of trash.
So, basically, what they are saying is that you really shouldn't play the multiplayer mode in Far Cry 2, because it's going to be total garbage.
Far Cry 2, if anything, should only be recognized for its single player experience. Who the hell gives a crap about multiplayer. How many people have actually played multiplayer in Far Cry for more than a day, let alone a week. It just wasn't that good! (except for the co-op mods to follow, that added awesomeness to the experience). We all played it for the awesome graphics and gameplay, where multiplayer was last on the list.
With that said, I cannot wait to try out Far Cry 2, sans multiplayer.

Map editor is useless without bots. Are there going to be bots in it?

I loved the first Far Cry. I'm happy that Ubisoft has made so much video footage available for Far Cry 2.
This game edges out Fallout 3 only because I'm not done with Oblivion.

Kind of bummed there's no conquest style gameplay mode included. An open sandbox style game like that seems like it would be a perfect match.

This is going to be amazing, but I really hope it doesn't feel as stiff as the first one. October and November are seriously going to dent the good ol' pocketbook.
My must-buys so far:
Fallout 3
Fable 2
Gears 2
Saints Row 2
Far Cry 2
That's $300 RIGHT THERE!!! I may have to resort to rentals!

While I wasn't a fan of the first Far Cry, this one sounds much more promising. I wish the release date was sooner though. Not so much because I really want the game but because it's released only days before Fable 2 and Fallout 3.
The singler player and the map editor have been pretty stoked. The multiplayer though I'm kind of lukewarm about.

I don't know which I'm more excited for. The game itself, or the map editor. Oh well, come quickly, sweet Jesus!!

@snowbeach024: Agreed, I don't know why any of the FarCry or Crysis games haven't had co-op gameplay, the large environments, vehicles and stealth would really lend themselves to a fun co-op experience.

How do you know this game is going to be any good, being that Crytek aren't involved?

Far Cry 2 seems to be a pretty solid package. Assuming trekking 50 square kilometres in Singleplayer is going to last me twenty hours, I'm going to have my money's worth before I even touch the multiplayer/map editor.

I thought Shadowrun could have been the next Goldeneye if only it had local multiplayer. Not that I bought it. The demo was freaking brilliant though.

I will purchase this game, just not day 1. Like others have said above me, i'd love to see Co-op, and if it did have it, I would purchase day 1.
As of now i'll get this game when I feel like making some maps, that's my favorite part about this game.
My first project will be to make a map based on the show LOST.

thank you! i mean seriously..far cry 2's gunna be a 50 hour game? i'll be lonely after the first couple hours.
sigh..just imagine all the crazy distraction 'n flanking strategies you could use with two people..reminiscent of the climax action scene from proof of life.
it would be great if this and all these other shooters could incorporate something similar to rainbow six's terrorist hunt game. gears 2 took the hint
developers! co-op is huge for gamers! replayability multiplies 100-fold!
oh well..left 4 dead's leading the way for us co-op lovers

Since this is Ubisoft, can we pretty much assume that all 4 flavors will come with DRM that will cause me not to buy it?

@refused: I see your comment on the main, page but not in the comments here! What's up with that? I agree Shadowrun is awesome. The balance is perfect for a MP FPS. I still throw it in every week or so and kill idiot elves.
I don't, however understand the great outcry for co-op (in any game). I think it's terribly boring, and detracts from the game immersion in a campaign. But I'm a competitive person and play MP first in any game.

Shadowrun is amazing. Yes thats right, I said it. Everyone gives it a hard time due to lack of gametypes, maps and single player content. But at the least the gameplay has a lot of depth compared to other console FPS' in my opinion. Good sales does not always equal good game.
I like the sound of this personally, for the above reason. I was already planning to get Far Cry 2 exclusively for the single player, but this just gives me more reason to buy it.

@Enochrewt: Agree with you on Shadowrun, and I too don't understand the outcry for co-op. Co-op only works in certain games. Honestly there are a few games, Mass Effect as an example, that can be an amazing experience provided you are totally immersed into the game. I like playing some SP games alone late at night with all the lights off - almost like im watching a film.
Having a second person there could ruin the atmosphere. Especially when you're chatting on about you're day when you could be following the story without missing a word. I don't have a PS3 yet, but I have played the first Act of MGS4 at a friends house. I honestly cannot imagine playing the full game with lights on and someone else there. Its the kind of thing I like to play alone, without any mic chatter or anything else. Pure atmosphere really. Well thats just what I think of it.

@Enochrewt: @Refused:
i understand what you guys mean. i guess it's just preference.
i guess i'm lucky to have friends that wouldn't ruin my campaign experience, but rather enhance it. not to mention we playing in rooms miles away, so we still get the entire atmosphere with our individual game set ups.
remember the halo 3 release?..it took us extra long to finish campaign just because we were geeking out on the small things we could see/hear.
jes gotta find the right cohesion..sometimes that means if you wanna do something right you gotta do it yourself.

@snowbeach024: Yeah Halo 3 I will admit is an exception. What I liked about the Halo 3 release that it was the only thing people talked about the day. The hype was absoloutely massive, so signing onto Live it was impossible to not jump in with friends :D I played through it first with my little brother though, because we enjoyed the first two games with each other.
Although I do like the Halo story, I still think the community is what makes it such a brilliant game. You just jump in and have fun with friends, thats the kind of game it is. The story as it is presented in the game is not incredibly complex or interesting. Its the kind of story that you need to go out and read the books and research a ton before you can piece it together. I think that had a lot to do with why co-op was so great in Halo.

@Refused: excellently put. halo canon = win. haha i guess it wasnt fair of me to use the exceptional example of halo co-op. i can relate though..went thru h3 with my buddies who taught and constantly betrayed me in the halo 1 'n 2 campaigns. i honestly think we spent more time either killing each other or finding other crap to do rather than playing the actual campaign (my fave is outskirts where a checkpoint saves right after the zanzibar ghost fight 'n you can throw grenades at the waiting warthog 'n reload the checkpoint endlessly..or play legendary with the ultra skull 'n get all the sword elites to follow you like jehovah's witnesses.
'n to put myself in your shoes..the cod 4 single player campaign was AMAZING. best single player experience i've ever had.
then again tisk tisk on me for not having the money for bioshock 'n orange box..yeah i know the prices are down, but with this fall line up of games i can't spare the change for more of last years shooters.
