LA Noire: At Least A Year Off, Very Expensive, Coming To 360?
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 12:20 PM on September 20, 2008
Been all quiet on the LA Noire front for a while now. So how's everything going? Well according to the president of the Game Developers' Association of Australia (LA Noire's in development at Team Bondi studios in Sydney), Tom Crago, everything's going just fine. He says the game has around "a year or so to go", then adds that it "could be the biggest budget videogame in development anywhere in the world. It would certainly... in terms of console titles, be in the top ten... LA Noire is a massive massive project". Never really had the game pegged as a BLOCKBUSTER before, but hey, if that's how Rockstar want to spend their cash, it's their cash! Finally, he also told attendees at Games Convention Asia that the game was coming to 360. Funny, since it's always been a PS3 exclusive. Then again, Crago's boss of the GDAA, not boss of Team Bondi, so we'll peg this last bit a rumour for now.

Being the most expensive game to develop and exclusive to PS3? that would be suicide.

@XbhaskarX: I always thought it started with "Double Indemnity" in 1944. "Maltese Falcon" is very much still a "mystery." But really, what does it matter? It's all generally "opinion."
Plus, there's a whole historical aspect to it, of film noir being derived from the American zeitgeist during and post-WWII. I mean, we're all really proud of that 'A' you got in Film 101, but it's seriously not that big of a deal.

@Zim: GTA 4 has already sold 10 million copies. That was as of 8/16. It was only released on 4/29. It took San Andreas 3 years to sell 21.5 million copies, and the console install base was much larger for PS2/Xbox than it is even now for 360/PS3 when San Andreas was released. GTA 4 is a game that will continue to be a must buy once they get a 360 or PS3. SA is actually the only GTA that I haven't played. If I'm going to play a last gen GTA, I'd always go for Vice City. If anything though, GTA 4 is on track to be more successful than San Andreas.

@XbhaskarX: Thank you for clearing that up, I was just about to say almost exactly what you said. LA Conifdential is a perfect example btw. Even movies such as Mulholland Drive have been referred to lightly as Film Noir. It's still a style and form of storytelling, just not as drastic as in the 40s.

@Zim:
Dude, you are a moron who knows nothing about films, why are you pretending to know what you're talking about?
Film noir didn't cease to exist because it's no longer popular, it is a genre that is considered to have started with The Maltese Falcon in 1941 and ended with Touch of Evil in 1958.
There are plenty of films that have been made since then in the film noir style, they are just not considered to be "classic film noir"... because they are post-1958! I could list fifty examples but I'll just mention LA Confidential (1997) since it was so successful.
Maybe next time you can search the internet for the term "Neo-noir"...

Thats odd, haven't really heard anything about this for a long time. In fact last thing I remember hearing was that it wasn't possible on the 360 because it was too large to fit on a dvd. But while I'm a little miffed at losing exclusivity I can understand it with R* going down the tubes

... Wait a noir game the most expensive ever? Noir as in the usually not very popular genre?
Film noir hasn't been popular in like 50 years =/ Just check out imdb's film noir section, the most recent movie in the top 50 is from 1957.
I would have thought Rockstar learnt there lesson from Gta. Personally I think a big reason 4 looks like it won't get anywhere near the sales numbers of SA is simply because far more people are interested in hiphiop/rap culture etc than in the story of an eastern european immigrant. Sa did around 20 million on ps2/xbox, I would be surprised if Gta4 made it to 15million.

I don't care if this game is multiplatform or not. The little we know about it makes me feel that "one of the most expenisve games ever" is going to end up being more of negative footnote than a positive one. Seems very niche (particularly in setting, even though I sure love noir) for such a tag.

@SAGA: Depends what you mean by "BLOCKBUSTER" money. Because Gears of War 2, Fable 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, etc, have blockbuster budgets as far as I'm concerned.
Either way, as a proud PS3 and 360 owner, I'm perfectly happy for it to be cross-platform, so long as there's none of this "exclusive DLC" crap. That's worse, as far as I'm concerned.

GTA IV cost $100 million to make (and no doubt another $20 or $30 million to market). And while the game would have been a huge success on any one system, it's looking to move between 12 and 15 million copies in 2008 alone. For anyone doing the math, that is closing in on the $1 billion mark.
But then again, that is GTA. A franchise of which everyone wants a piece.
LA Noire on the other hand, that is a completely unknown franchise, by a relatively unknown developer. True Rockstar Games purchased the development studio a couple years back (I hear as more a favor to the owner, who is friends with the Houser Bros). For an unknown franchise by an unknown developer to get a larger development budget than GTA IV, yet expect to actually have a chance at earning all that money back, and breaking even, there is simply no way on Earth any publisher is going to risk the game being exclusive to a single console - it's just fiscally irresponsible, and is not going to happen.
I have no doubts that the peeps at Rockstar feel that LA Noire is likely going to be their next, big franchise (big enough even to rival GTA . . . now that is a sobering thought), or they would not have shoveled over $100,000,000 into the game's production. Yet at the same time they are shoveling $100,000,000+ into this title, they are likely spreading that love around to both the 360 and the PC, to give them a much greater chance of making their money back.
If at some point the LA Noire franchise turns out to be as big as GTA, then at that point I could see the possibility of it going console exclusive (for any 1st party dumb enough to fork over that kind of cash for it). But in the here and now, it is an unknown franchise by a relatively unknown developer, that has a year left to go, and has already cost over $100,000,000 to make (not counting the multi-million $$$$ marketing budget). A little bird named Wisdom is telling me, LA Noire is most definitely going to be a multi-platform title, with a day one release across both HD platforms and maybe the PC on day one as well.

L.A. Confidential? seriously listing that as proof that Noir is still popular? A movie from 10 years ago that couldn't even make it to 130million box office worldwide. That is not popular, Ananconda did better than that. Men in black doing 589million is popular, Jurssaic park 2 doing 619million is popular.
I'll tell you what. Go to box office mojo and look at genres. Neo noir doesn't have a single movie that did over 100million in the USA. There are in fact very very few genres with lower grossing top movies. Examples being the Travelogue - New Jersey genre and the werewolf genre.
The only successful neo-noir movie since 2000 is Sin city. Which im guessing will be pretty far in tone from L.A. Noire.
Noir isn't a popular genre. You can't spend 200million making a noir movie and hope it will be a blockbuster hit. You can do that with action, adventure etc. Likewise you can't spend 100million making a noir game and hope it will be a blockbuster hit.

@Zim: It is quite sad that genres and movies today are judged by how much money can be put into them (read: quality) and how much they make in their opening weekend.
Film Noir was always the genre that didn't need a massive budget to make it work. Neither did it need to be popular. It is the rebel in the movie business.

@senote: No what im saying is certain genres struggle. Not once have I mentioned quality.
Way to use a freak event to try and prove something though -_-. Titanic was very very unusual. It's opening wasn't enourmous and niether were it's first few weeks. However it had incredible legs. Partly because a lot of teenage girls saw it multiple times, partly word of mouth. A huge percentage of the women I know who were teenagers when it came out saw it at least 3 times. A couple over 5 times and one even over 10times.
Also my point was never that big action movie = big bucks. It was that big movie in certain genres = big bucks. And other genres are never going to be that big no matter the quality of the movie etc.
@chimp_o_death: Indeed it is however La noire (and all other film noir) do not feature batman, the joker and all the hype about Heath ledgers last full performance.
