You've Been Sent a FITNESS ULTIMATUM
Posted by Owen Good at 10:00 AM on September 21, 2008
Alright, well, if Wii Fit wasn't badass enough for you, now you can sign up to have your arse kicked by Jillian Michaels, whose "Fitness Ultimatum" for Wii (out next year) apparently involves an invisible Wiimote and a completely unforeseen monkey-bars peripheral. Graphics look a little clunky, but if you're dripping as much sweat as this thing promises, you probably won't care. But then, if you buy this thing, your priorities are probably way different from a standard gamer's.

@YHWHMystic: That's your opinion. Look at how many formerly unknown artists and older works largely ignored are popular today (Dragonforce) because of these games. Some people like to "frantically pound on plastic buttons" and pretend they're rockstars because thats how they enjoy their music, who are you to judge? People have enjoyed music, playing "air-guitar", are they not as musically intuned as you?
@WallaJoy- Snorlax?: If you weren't already running outside before, what makes you think you're going to do it now? At least these games (as half assed as they are) are encouraging you to get some exercise you otherwise wouldn't have gotten. And besides, here in Canada, it could get upwards of -35 degrees celcius during the winter time. I'll stay inside and do some hula-hula hoops (imagine that ew!), while you go jog around outside, thanks.

Get an exercise bike? I live in Canada too so I either suck it up and go outside or play video games, if I want physical activity I'll do actual exercise with weights or a bike both of which are cheap.

@NeVeRMoRe666: That too! I'm also Canadian and last winter we had weeks of -40 degree weather. It's fine during the summer but there's no way I go outside for longer than 5 minutes when I chance getting frostbite in half that time. I'm lucky enough to have an exercise room in my house but it's expensive and I can see the appeal in getting the Wii and getting the effect for a fraction of the price (regardless of whether or not that's possible).

@WallaJoy- Snorlax?: You may think that it's a scam, but it's an awfully good motivator. I've personally lost the 10+ pounds I've been carrying since I graduated from college using Wii Fit. The daily weighing alone makes you realize what eating half a pizza or a night out drinking does to your weight. :p
Anyway, just because you don't see any value in it, doesn't mean that it's a scam. It's a tool that just happens to be a bit of fun.

@WallaJoy- Snorlax?: The problem with this type of idea (or even the idea of going to gym) is that fat people are self-conscious. It's easy enough for skinny people to say this kind of stuff, and no, I'm not fat so don't jump to that conclusion. I am however a girl, and even I don't like the idea of going to a gym where I can be either ogled or stared at in disgust. I've actually witnessed people look at fat people trying to get into shape and just laugh. While it may be cheap as hell to manufacture and all that, it can get people motivated enough so they do start to feel more comfortable with their bodies. Even losing ten pounds can be enough for someone to feel like they're ready to go the gym.

@GreyFoxV1: Exercise bikes and weights only work specific parts of your body. And where exactly do you live in Canada? You can not "suck it up" when it's -40C outside with the windshield. I have not seen ANY person outside jogging in the middle of my winters. Don't know why people insist on coming down on people who want to use their Wii (which you know, they may already have at home) to help them get fit. We have had many people on here claiming to have lost weight using Wii Fit, this only seems to intensify that same game. Not everyone plays the same types of game, just as not everyone enjoys sitting on a stationary riding bike when it may be easier for them to have a personal "home fitness coach" at home.

Seriously though, why not just workout? Why waste time with this gimmicky crap where you're basically stuck to a bathroom scale for your whole workout. The same time invested in some real routines would probably net you better results.
If you're really opposed to going out or to a gym, get a treadmill (or bike, elypticals) with some dumbbells. It's all you really need to get started (get a book for some good dumbbell exercises).

I almost feel sorry for Wii owners just having the option to buy this garbage. Now, I wasn't happy about Nintendo's choice of hardware of the Wii, but it's controls gave it an amazing opportunity for great games. I don't mean endless Mario and Zelda games, I don't mean exercise games. I mean games, like Okami.
The most successful and "innovative" console this generation and developers either make the same old crap or this brand new, cash-in, awful crap.

@Hey_guy: Well, that's why they don't call it the Nintendo Seal of Quality anymore.
In a perfect world, Nintendo would dip into that warchest of money, and develop a home console aimed at the functionality that core gamers want. If they want absolute market domination, they should stop being so stubborn in regards to HD, online functionality, and portable device connectivity.
At this point, I find none of Nintendo's hardware appealing, and the software selection is way too hit and miss to sustain this new wave of gamers that Nintendo has amassed.
It couldn't be that difficult for a company with such vast resources. But, this is a business, and it's all about the bottom-line. And as Nintendo has proven, it's a lot more cost effective to say you're innovating than to actually do it.

@ddollar: Don't get me wrong, real exercise is endlessly better than this and wii fit. I play on a recreational football team, I know the difference. However, what I'm getting at is that this kind of thing isn't typically marketed at people who were going to the gym in the first place. It may not be much but its a start, its way better than sitting on the couch or on the computer playing marathon sessions of WoW right? Its an incentive for people to start. Why hate on it? Obviously you don't use it but others might. I think theres value in that.

Wow. The vitriol fired at people who would potentially play this game is harsh. I don't understand the hatred.
I don't own Wii Fit, I probably won't get it, but maybe some people find it, I don't know, fun. I exercise 4 or 5 times a week, and I HATE it. Every day is a 30 minute debate on whether or not I actually want to go to the gym. But I go because I want to stay in shape. If they can trick people into having fun while getting at least a MODERATE amount of exercise, then that's a step in the right direction.
And let's not forget about the immediate rewards. Exercise rewards you over the long term. A video game can reward you in the short term, making it more likely that you continue to play the game and accidentally get some real exercise.
But I say, if people want to use this as a gateway into some more intense exercise, fucking let them. I think people need more ENCOURAGEMENT to get in shape. We live in this society where fat people are either ostracized or we're told to just ignore them. Why not offer them some positive motivation instead?
I don't understand why the internet is so angry all the time.

What's truly awesome about this is that it's apparently being marketed to "the hardcore". But the hardcore *fitness* people, rather than the hardcore video game people. It's seemingly meant to pick up people who already have a Wii, and already have Wii Fit, but feel it isn't challenging enough---like a gamer who gets Tiger Woods Wii after being insufficiently challenged by Wii Sports Golf.
The idea of a game console having two completely incompatible definitions of "hardcore"---as evidenced by the carping on this thread---is just marvelous, and further proof that Nintendo's on the right track.

Honestly I don't see the point of these 'fitness' games. all 'moves' (and considering WiiFit I can state - even much better ones) you can do without the board (with similar precision .... the WiiFit board is bad anyways at judging this), so the whole purpose comes down to the connection to the game .... which is .... bad music, ugly graphics and features you can use a piece of paper for (write down your training plan and your weight every day).
Why is there no game? There are so many options. Where is the story? Where is the gaming challenge? E.g imagine pixeljunk racers where you have to use the board as "stepper" to keep moving. THAT would be cool. Ad a anime story to it and you have a perfect training game..

Here's my problem with this video. They don't really show enough of the game play to judge if it will be any good. It's all ready been established that the graphics are blocky and chunky. The animation needs an overhaul. It looks like they took the animations from The Sims on the consoles look at when they balance on the log (Oh god the water is terrible) or run and you'll know what I am talking about. Second thing I can see that needs work is the texturing. In order to look nice and neat the texturing should be nice and neat. Here its almost as if the took textures from later psOne games.

@Nutchos: When I first bought Rock Band, I had no prior drumming experience. In fact I had never even thought I'd be any good at anything musical. After months of playing though, I am in love with it. I drum on that game everyday. I drum so much I've purchased a drum throne, wrap sticky tape around my sticks, and I'm looking to purchase an actual electronic set.
The purpose of games is what is being missed. Rock Band made me get up and take part in something and it changed my view of it in return. If I were to buy this game, who is to say that same effect couldn't happen and I find myself getting motivated to take it to the next, real level? I think in the end that's the entire point behind it. To inspire you, not to chisel your abs in 2 weeks flat.

Just what I need, another annoying women not so subtlety bitching at me to do something. Yea, I think I'll pass.

@Nutchos: Because some people can't afford to get up and walk 10 feet past their TV. You know, health hazard.
