Rockstar: Wii 'Didn't Feel Natural' For GTA
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 10:20 PM on September 22, 2008
Yup, more from the big GTA: Chinatown Wars blowout that dominates the latest issue of Nintendo Power magazine. While the Wii would seem the most obvious Nintendo system to bring the GTA franchise to, Rockstar boss Dan Houser instead says the DS was the more "natural" fit:
[The Wii] didn't feel natural to us, I guess. It really was that the DS felt like it had a lot of interesting challenges that would be totally different from what we'd done in the past. The stylus and the chance to use minigames in that way was really interesting and exciting to us, and we thought we could integrate seamlessly between those two modes. And it would be the chance to make something really good on a handheld with our handheld-focused team. That was really why we went that way. We haven't really done any concrete, major thinking about the Wii, one way or another. They're sort of separate issues.
That and the money, Dan. Don't forget the printing of money.

GMC hit the nail on the head. Godfather probably has some of the best controls for a sandbox title I've ever used and that concerns both gunplay and hand to hand combat.

@GMC: Maybe the Housers think better of you than to give you some Capcom-esque Wii-peat, ala RE4.
It's hilarious that people are so offended that Rockstar isn't making a GTA for the Wii.

Wii isn't a right fit for GTA but DS is? uh riiiiight okay sure..."We never thought one way or the other about developing on the best selling console in the world"
@GMC: agreed. If EA did anything for the sandbox genre they proved that it sure as hell could work on Wii with waggle controls. Took bad Rockstar doesn't get it.

"I don't like money" says Houser.
Just port a Vice City / Vice City Stories melange to the wii - tack on the Godfather controls and you've got a purchase.
I know this is the wrong attitude to have as a gamer who would like to see new, built-from-the-ground-up wii games, but this seems worth it even just for the gameplay exeprience that would result.

On another note, I think I must have been playing Okami and No More Heroes incorrectly.
Because I got hyped for them like most people, but didn't enjoy either enough to continue playing for more than a few hours or so.
Oh well. At least Zack and Wiki worked out.

So I take it you own Metroid Prime 3 and Mario Galaxy.
Are you some kind of collector who keeps them in the packaging? You sort of have to play them to see how they work.
That may just be me. Then again, I don't live in your world where some rascals put fake games on retail shelves.

@Mact: First I'd need a definition of what a "real game" is, because apparently it isn't: Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Resident Evil, Metal Slug, Okami, or No More Heroes. Which is odd as I always thought they were pretty "real".

Wiimote+nunchuck would be hell of a lot better than dual analogs for a sandbox game like GTAIV. Closer to mouse+keyboard control which makes the PC versions the connoisseurs' choice.

@AngryEddy: Yeah, I'll second that observation. Whenever a big franchise doesn't make it to a system or becomes multi-platform after being a console exclusive on the previous generation (like Final Fantasy) the fanboys get their panties all in a bunch. It's pretty amusing really.

I know I wouldn't want to see a crime simulator sandbox game on a system that has Mad World, No More Heroes, Manhunt 2, and Pokemon Ranch.
If I was a game developer, I certainly wouldn't want it on a system that sells a lot and can handle at least what the PS2 games could graphically and mechanically.
Still, it is a choice of the developer and producers and I respect that, even if I do make fun of them a bit.
Though I think I'll go back and play GTA: London. Unlike the 3D games, i can go back and play that as a quick and fun mission game.

Not trying to poke fun at the Wii but how much would have to be dumbed down or cut out from GTA IV if they did port it.
Dead Rising looks like it got the axe big time and it was a system launch title... unless capcom are just that bad at utilizing the Wii.
Or would Rockstar more than likely built an entirely new GTA or the wii or ported over their older ones (3, liberty city and san andreas?)

@Mact:
Very smart of you to take my comment about real games and take it completely literally. Attacking the language instead of the point, I think is that tactic?
The point is, when the Wiimote was announced, is its current iteration what you had expected? When Zelda was released, did you expect OoT with a new coat of paint, trudging through the first 5 hours of the game herding goats, and having the game rely on nostalgia to keep you hooked? Did you expect games to be dumbed down so significantly for the console, most games were unintelligible from their cross-platform counterparts?
I would find that hard to believe you did. Now, the Wiimote plus promises to be what ALL of us [including you, don't lie] wanted from this controller in the first place. I'd go as far as saying its introduction could be the rebirth of the console among a playerbase that it has left behind. Here's to hoping that's the case.

I wouldn't mind a GTA game on the Wii. The graphical limitations of the Wii don't bother me. San Andreas for the PS2 was huge and The Wii is more powerful than a Gamecube and the Gamecube was more powerful than the PS2 so I would trust that Rockstar could at least make a game that looks acceptable - whether that be by making a game with a simplified look and large scope (like San Andreas) or by condensing it within a smaller area to be able to get more detail (like Shenmue).
I feel I have just reached the point where "the new graphical hotness" doesn't impress me anymore. How many times in my life can I say "Wow that looks so real! I'm in the game!"? *yawn* That's why I like the Wii. it's at least trying to make the experience different and I feel the graphics are fine within the context of the games I've bought for the Wii and its limitations have driven more creativity from the designers who make the effort. Now it's really more about art direction than how many brown polygons your console can render. In ten years Okami will still look great but people will be complaining how bad Gears of War 2 looks because you can't see the character's pores or there isn't realistic back sweat physics or some crap.
I know it's a moot point since Rockstar said they won't be making a GTA for the Wii, I'm just saying it's possible and it would still be fun. Also, the Wiimote would make aiming way easier than the dodgy controls allow in traditional GTA games. So if you're listening Rockstar, keep it in mind for the future.

Heck, if they made a GTA with San Andreas engine, with a little more polished look and put it into a DVD9 it would rock probably. San Andreas, to me, was 10 times more fun than GTAIV, and GTAIV was the first reason I bought a 360 for, but now I barely play it (but I have a lot of awesome games on 360 anyway!!). So, GTAWII would be cool, I guess, if done properly...

@JocktheMotie:
"The point is, when the Wiimote was announced, is its current iteration what you had expected?"
I'm going to assume you're referring to the fact that it's not 1-to-1. Yes. Did I expect FPS controls to reach their current standard? Yes, and I have been happily rewarded for that.
"When Zelda was released, did you expect OoT with a new coat of paint, trudging through the first 5 hours of the game herding goats, and having the game rely on nostalgia to keep you hooked?"
Yes on all but the goat thing. If you couldn't tell that Twilight Princess was banking on all its fans' first Zelda being Ocarina of Time, you obviously weren't paying attention. However, I didn't play it for the nostalgia factor. I thought it was a genuinely fun game (though I do prefer Wind Waker). Did I expect it to be revolutionary? No. It was a Gamecube game. Why should I?
"Did you expect games to be dumbed down so significantly for the console, most games were unintelligible from their cross-platform counterparts?"
You'll need to give some specifics here as well. I'm not sure what cross-platform games have been dumbed down. I will say that I didn't buy a Wii for the crossplatform games. Obviously a game designed for the high-powered 360 is not going to be as great on a technically lesser machine. It's only logical. I find it harder to believe that direct ports from the 360 were feasible. That's why I own both.
"Now, the Wiimote plus promises to be what ALL of us [including you, don't lie] wanted from this controller in the first place."
I also want a jetpack, but that doesn't mean technology has reached a point that I'm going to get one. For me, the initial controls of the Wii got me excited because it was a step in the right direction. It would be foolish to expect perfection the first time in. Take the FPS controls for example. I was psyched at the possibilities, but at the same time did not expect the first games to have it down.
