Shit. Pub Games is Patched ... Or is It?
Posted by Owen Good at 4:00 AM on September 22, 2008
The parade of bloviation about the Fable II Pub Games exploit just will not die down. Of course, first Peter Molyneux said that cheaters would be "in for a surprise" if they tried to transfer their ill-gotten wealth to Fable II, once it releases. Then a couple sites spotted something curious in IGN's Fable II preview, in which Molyneux implied the glitch was actually a deliberate inclusion. Now Lionhead Studios has put out a patch, although someone (above) is claiming that drive maintenance will reactivate the exploit.
First, Molyneux and the "deliberate glitch" idea. The original phrasing of IGN's sentence about it: "Just be warned. Molyneux has said that the cheat was no accident and that those who used it to earn their money will be in for a surprise." was rewritten to "Just be warned. Molyneux has said that they are well aware of the cheat and that those who used it to earn their money will be in for a surprise."
That sounds about right. The idea that this particular glitch would be included is kind of laughable, even if you want to think of it in the choose good/choose evil context of the Fable franchise. Isn't that a little subtle, anyway? Well, the whole thing's was patched as of Thursday evening, resetting the leaderboards, so it's all moot -- or is it?
See the annotation in the video above? Someone's now saying you can continue to use the gold exploit by entering the "perform maintenance on storage devices" code (at the storage device tab in System, highlight a drive, enter Y X X LB RB X X). But it doesn't really matter for me because I never got above the minimum bet limit in Fortune's Tower, the game where the gold exploit works.
Disclaimer: Although performing storage device maintenance sounds like an innocent-enough thing to do, I have no idea if this procedure, in combination with whatever's in the patch, actually does nasty shit to Fable II Pub Games, renders it inoperable, or anything else you don't want done. In the end, you're getting cheat tips off a YouTube video, be warned. However, if someone does get it to work, let me know in the comments.

@domain: This is true. I have used the system maintenance feature before and all it does is remove all game patches as far as im aware.
I didn't even buy Pub Games. Its a nice idea, but I want my Fable 2 adventure to start when I have Fable 2.

i know this sounds like a stupid question, but what other cheats were there? i only knew about the tower one, and the guy in the video says something about the spinner one i never heard about that one.

The "maintenance" feature has been available (and documented online) for as long as I can remember... it basically just clears the system cache/patch data for EVERYTHING on the storage device... Some people have claimed that it can affect other things (information related to on-going achievements etc.) but i've never seen that to be the case.
So basically, you are just "unpatching" the game... as for why you would want to do this, particularly to cheat is beyond me.

im thinking that if you have a certain amount of $ like 3inst3ins 2 mill then they will reduce it b/c it will take a long time to reach that amount of money so they will know who is cheating or not. Or maybe there is like a counter in the pub game that keeps track of how many times u use the glitch. That would be hillarious

can't you just start with a new character? its easy enough to get rich in the pub games if you play the odds against themselves. they payout odds are better than the actual odds for certain results. work out the math and you're guranteed pofit (in teh long term, not short term)

By having a shit ton of money right from the start of Fable II aren't you just making the game too easy?

so, has anybody actually aspplied the patch? it resets leader boards, but does it remove ill gotten gains; will I get to keep my $2 million?

I'm hoping that the exploit WAS intentional. Molyneux implied that cheating in the Pub Games might have implications in the full game, like for example, starting with more evil points.

I wonder... If we DON'T patch the game and continue to play it offline, will we be able to transfer stuff once Fable II hits anyways? Or will the Fable II game prompt you to patch the Pub Games first?
I think I'll just leave my pub games unpatched and find out.

My prediction? The amount of money you make gambling was always going to make your corruption (rather than evil) level go up, so the people who made millions of gold on this patch are going to have the sleaziest gits possible.

This glitch was intentional, yet they 'fixed' it? Right. There is not going to be any punishment within Fable 2. They just want people to think that so they stop cheating for gold.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the fact that everyone did this after they accidentally patched oblivion, I had this shit memorized and when i realized what happened to my pub games I immidiately went and 'xx lb lb xx'ed all over my hard drive. You just have to repatch your games, nothing bad really happens.

I didn't update the game and continued to use the glitch (offline) to get all of the achievements. Now that I have all of them, I'll do the update and maybe see if I can earn money legitimately.
However, given the rather random nature of the games, earning legit money--which I tried to do at first--is rather difficult. I never made any money from Spinnerbox or Fortune's Tower. I did manage to make some money from Keystone with a few well-timed strategies, but my losses from Spinnerbox and Fortune more than offset it.
So, if I can't raise any money legitimately, what's the point? If I start the game in significant debt due to the randomness of the pub games, how does that benefit me/my character? I'd rather NOT play the game any more and start at zero rather than risk starting in debt.

I got my couple of thousand gold and items, thats all I wanted. I want to try playing Keystone, cause I have no idea how to play it, but I just have no interest in it. I say if it gives me Evil or Corruption points, oh well. I remember in the original Fable all you had to do is donate gold to a shrine to get change your alignment. Either way I intend to go Evil. Its kinda Win Win for me.

I would hope everyone reads this and I can get confirmation on if you have like 3 million gold or any other insane amount, and then when you patch the game if you lose all your gold or have the ammount dropped down? I am rarely if EVER connected to Xbox live, so patches and stuff like this doesn't ever really effect me, I've played the Pug games offline since the moment I downloaded them.
Also, and I guess this question can't be answered until Fable 2 comes out, but I'm wondering if we'll be able to port over our character from the pub games without the patch...I would assume no, but if we have all the money we're satisfied with, don't play the games again until Fable 2 comes out, patch it and port over, I don't see how we can lose gold.
I'm almost 100% positive I'm safe. :P
As a side note and question...why do you people play these things connected to Live? o_O;

Removing the patch might not do anything. In some games like Forza 2 they patched a credit glitch and if you update the game and then remove the patch by clearing the cache your saved game won't work until you download the patch again. I haven't tried it on the Pub games yet but clearing cache is such a glaringly obvious loop hole that they should've seen coming either way.
Alsooo, I think he's full of crap saying it was intentional. Seems like he's just trying to scare people out of doing it. I know there's the whole good/evil thing but if they were to let you cheat couldn't they have done something like hide cards in your sleeve for Fortunes Tower or rig the dice on Keystone? And then have the dealer punish you by taking away some gold if you do it too much. At least something that doesn't appear to be anything more than a glitch/exploit. Patching it doesn't make the "oh we did it on purpose" comment any more convincing.

Most likely it wasn't intentional, and the patch fixes the glitch, and there's some code that determines whether you've done the glitch or not, and then when Fable II drops, you'll see the 'consequences'.

He's just bluffing, I look forward to having my medieval 'batman' like hero in Fable II thanks to this glitch. Living in my mansion going out kicking some ass and coming home to tell my butler about it... and have an 3-way with my two wives. Ok that last part has nothing to do with Batman, but I look forward too it anyway.
I already had over 3 million gold I don't think I will need anymore so patch away, I am surprised it took them this long.

I don't understand in a game "Fable" that lets you steal things out of stores, kill the innocent, and *SPOILER* old spoiler don't know if anyone didn't know this but here it goes, in a game where it lets you choose if you want to kill your sister or not, I don't see how a Pub Game money glitch is a bad thing I would have thought that they would have supported it and said hey do what you have to do. I could see if they wanted to link evil points to your Hero for it though.

Y'know, the glitch was usable in any FT game, it just didn't garner as much money. And any glitch can be redone after patching by doing the cheat-codesque system maintenance.

Well of curse this would work. When you do maintenance on your HDD you remove ALL updates (excluding DLC updates, ex. Burnout Paradise) for ALL games thus making the game in question brand new. But here is a better question, why would you update the Pub Games if your just going to remove the update?

Depending on how long I have to play until I can merge my character with my pub character, I was planning on using the exploit on one of the other profiles on my console and starting the game with them to see what happens. I can't decide whether or not its going to be a big deal.

@Dark_Mirage: The achievement lists are already up at achieve360points - no such achievement listed.
I reckon the gamekeepers will send heavies after you for cheating or somesuch. It'll be a morality thing: you are a cheat, and people will know in-game.
Personally, I think I'll just keep playing Keystone.

Because I've been unpatching games to do old glitches for quite some time I'd like to mention that I, the maker of the video above, have had no long term problems.

Spinnerbox isn't a cheat. He's just talking about the generally good odds you get when playing that particular pub game.
But yeah, I agree with 3inst3in. I don't care if I can't use the exploit anymore, as long as I get to keep my money.

I'm not quite sure if what he meant was that the pub glitch itself gets you bad stuff, or if its just coming into the game with a lot of money. Part of me wants to say what he meant was "Anyone who has a lot of cash from the pub games, mainly the cheaters, will have a bit of trouble when they first transfer over all that cash"
I was thinking this because he talks about being wealthy and poor in Fable 2 and that affecting how people talk to you. How would you act if someone just dropped a heap of money into the person next to you's lap?
Now, this is all speculation, but it seems to make more sense than "its intentional but we fixed it anyway" for me.
