Wii-mote Jog Through Google Map Tokyo
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 10:00 PM on September 22, 2008
A Japanese modder has mashed Google Maps with the Wii-mote to create "Tokyo-jogging". It works pretty much like Jogging in Wii Sports: Users put the Wii-mote in their pocket and run in place. Instead of running through a Nintendo created background, users can jog (in place) through the streets of Tokyo. The interface looks somewhat slow — but there's potential here!

@kitsuneconundrum: I thought the lack of pockets would cause a problem.

@Umandsf: @Blazinfire0: I'm Almost positive this is a PC program comsidering that you can connect the Wiimote to a PC via bluetooth.

is someone could figure out how to hook this mod up so that it looks like your running atop roofs and free running and such, that would be pretty sweet. or nintendo could make a peripheral treadmill and have it work with the mod so i can streak through tokyo.

This could be useful for agrophobic joggers. And smokers, i get so sick of feeling judged whilst I'm smoking and jogging.

Jogging in wii sports you say? I was un aware that I could jog in wii sports which game allows me to do that?
This is of course somewaht interesting and I think gyms should employ similar tech so those who exercise using treadmills could feel as if they were not simply jogging in place but exploring cities such as tokyo

Now that looks cool! Next step- jog thru your neighbourhood without leaving the house.

Interesting, but I never realized that Wii Sports has a jogging option.

@The_Inquisitor: It's typhoon season in TKY right now, so jogging outside = soggy clothes. This also allows people the option of jogging in places that they wouldn't dare jog normally- I think anyone, if prompted with the question "would you jog in (downtown) Shibuya," they'd say they would be too embarassed.

@SAKY:
And how pray tell does that have to do with my statement?
@teh_joe:
Ahem DURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
You do not have to tell me that. Perhaps maybe Mr Ashcraft requires it to be pointed out. I'm realtively certain that Umandsf and myself are well aware that jogging is in wii fit. However it may have mystified us that somebody reporting on news of the industry would make such mistakes since we consider kotaku to of course be a credible source of news in realtion to the gaming industry.
In future bless those who may very well need your "wisdom" with it and those who may have equal or greater knowledge than yourself rather than insult them with such comments

Or you can "exercise" my pressing the arrow key in a certain direction. You can also get exercise by playing that controversial massively multiplayer title Outside.

"The interface looks somewhat slow - but there's potential here!"
It's not slow due to any shortcomings on the programmer's part. Remember that Google Streetview is taken from a moving vehicle, and only takes a picture every 10 feet or so.

I demand a jurassic park fitness game... NOW.
Jog through jungles trying to escape hungry raptors...
Climb trees / dinosaur bones to escape a hungry T-rex.
Grab and hurl compy's off you before you mauled to death
I'm sure there are a lot more scenarios that could be added to this....

@denki: More so that you really can't jog in these places, if you tried to jog in Shibuya would end up jogging in place because of the crowds.

@denki: I think in my whole time in Tokyo, I saw one person jogging ever, and it was like, way out on the bridge between Tokyo and Chiba near Urayasu. I would imagine you're right -- people would be too embarrassed because of the crowds (and also jogging does not seem like something a lot of Jp people do, anyway).
