Burnout Paradise On PSN Store Thursday
Posted by Mike Fahey at 5:40 AM on September 23, 2008
PlayStation 3 users who have been too lazy to get up off their asses and make their way to the store to pickup Burnout Paradise will no longer have that excuse to fall back on come this Thursday, when the full game becomes available on the PlayStation Network for purchase and play. Announced just last month, the $29.99 download features the full content of the retail release, and upon downloading and installing will prompt you to update with all of the content Criterion has added to the title over the past year, including the recent bike patch.
I still don't see any information on how big this download is. Should be interesting to see what size of a chunk this eats on your PS3 hard disk.
Burnout Paradise - full game OUT THIS THURSDAY on the PlayStation Store [Criterion Games - Thanks CitizenInsane27]

I've loved previous Burnouts but I've been unsure about this version - though as EDGE states, Criterion's support for the game has by all accounts been unprecedented, so I will definitely be getting this off the PSN.. But.. Sept. 25th is WipEout HD Day.

This game is fun. There is no mincing words to it. I love the open map and screaming down towards the city from the outlying hills.
Breezing past cars through tunnels and blind turns with the draw distances going so far; it makes my blood boil in my veins.

I just got Burnout Paradise a few days ago, and it devoured my week-end, even though I was supposed to work (guess who's not sleeping tonight to catch up?).
I just couldn't tear myself away. I never expected it to be so addictive, especially since I don't usually enjoy racing games.
While I decided to buy the game mainly to support Criterion's great attitude towards us gamers, I find myself enjoying it so much that I'm especially glad I didn't purchase it used.
Criterion put a lot of work into this and deserve recognition - in the form of YOUR MONEY!

It's a frickin' awesome game, and one of my favorites on the PS3 right now.

Color me foolish, as I actually went out and purchased it last week to tide me over during the slump that always occurs pre-October to December. I was a big fan of the PS2 Burnout, because I loved crashing into things in the "see how much money you can accumulate in property damage!"
This one, although I'm not a racing game fan, holds my interest. With a friend, or more than a couple, online you can spend more than two or three hours at a clip running off ramps, completing challenges, or just making a rival of everyone and watching them all T-bone you.
I'd say between this and Wipeout HD, pick this one up, simply because Criterion have backed it SO well with downloadable content - but that's your call. I'm not disappointed.
Oh, and if you download it, you say "Screw you" to gamestop ... can't sell it back, but can't fund ripping all of us off, either!

@dirtybacon: Yes, absolutely. You just need to remove a little plastic cover on the bottom (vertical placement) or left side (horizontal) of the PS3, unscrew the HDD (easy as pie) and install the new one.
It's recognized instantly, and you can easily transfer your saved games from your original HDD to a USB stick (or other removable storage), then back to the new HDD.

My friends in Brazil are actually dying for this deal, cause US$30 now it's like R$54 (brazilian money) from their credit cards, if they go to store and buy the disc it's like R$250 (US$139), so they are all excited about this. WOW! I didn't expect this to come to the PSN this soon! However big the download is, it will take a LONG time for me to download it. I'm downloading the Mercenaries 2 demo right now. I started it almost 2 hours ago, and it's currently at 63%. And it's 1.1 Gb! It will probably be done in an hour or so. If Burnout: Paradise is 3.4 Gb, then it will take over 3 times as long to download it! So, it will be an all-day job! BOOOOOOO!!! I don't know if my DSL can take it!

As cool as this is, if there's a hard copy of the game I'd opt for that, just because I like having a physical copy of a game. Plus I like to conserve as much HDD space as possible, even when I eventually swap out for a 500+ gig HDD.

@dirtybacon: No, don't worry, it won't void your warranty, since HDD replacement officially supported by Sony - like TheFaze said, they even included instructions in the PS3 manual.
You don't need to open the console itself (which is what usually voids the warranty): the HDD is in a small, separate compartment.
Here's a guide from the US PS3 forums: [boardsus.playstation.com] A Google search will turn up many similar guides.
The file system is not an issue since the PS3 will format the drive anyway.
As for the brand, it doesn't really matter. Samsung, Western Digital, Maxtor, Seagate, Hitachi... As far as I know, none of them have any compatibility issues (why would they?).
One last thing: get a 5400rpm, as they produce less heat, and the PS3 won't take advantage of the extra theoretical speed of a 7200rpm HDD anyway.

So this is the new generation of full-game DLC. I commend Sony for having the balls to do this but I doubt that GameStop is ecstatic about it. I know MS can do it! They're doing it with LIVE Originals. If they can only grow a pair like Sony and do it with current titles like this then it'll immediately "get real".
okenny :) ...building bridges (to hide under)
okenny :) ...building bridges (to hide under)
Posted 12:25 PM 23/9/08
@crabperson: I guess the file size restrictions on XBLA titles might have been due to a few reasons. MS may have wanted to have developers make games that downloaded quickly, and due to resource restrictions, focused on gameplay mechanics versus presentation. Small file size would also force a developer to make a smaller game which would in turn facilitate bite-sized, sort-session experiences characterized with the spirit of the arcades.
I never once believed it was a bandwidth thing as they've always offered HD movies which at times could be in excess of 7GBs. They also began to offer Xbox original games which would be in excess of 6.4GBs so they have no fear of delivering full titles. Expansions and demos were also living on live. I think what MS really wanted to do was to make a mechanism to allow full multi-disc retail games to be available on live. I think we may see something soon after the fall update on this. Stay tuned :)

@okenny :) ...building bridges (to hide under): The limit was clearly set in place in order to accommodate all the 360 SKU's out there, so that even the Arcade ones can enjoy the titles. On paper, that sounds like win, but as this generation and the handling and release of titles have progressed, it's in my opinion a scheme, which has to go, in order to keep up. Little Big Planet and full games are here to stay for full download and Microsoft has to open up, in order to keep up.

I've held off for so long on this game, based off my frustration with Burnout Revenge and the lackluster demo, but for only $30 and with all the free DLC, I'm pretty tempted to give in and get it. I don't know if I'll go the download route though as I've only got a 40Gig PS3, but it's $29.99 in stores anyway.
Downloadable games (full games such as this) is something I haven't been all to convinced by yet, especially with both companies main SKU's having such limited hard drive space for so long. At least it's finally starting to change with 80gig PS3's and 60gig 360s.
