New Screens Raise Argonauts Higher
Posted by Mike Fahey at 1:20 AM on September 23, 2008
Hercules is so huge! Look at him! That guy could eat Schwarzenegger for lunch and still have room for Kevin Sorbo, but to be fair there's really always room for Kevin Sorbo. Codemaster's Rise of the Argonauts has quickly risen in my opinion over the last few months, ever since I got to see the game in action during E3. What I initially thought to be a cheap attempt to capitalise on the popularity of God of War is shaping up to be one of my most eagerly anticipated titles of the year. If the gameplay is up to par with the art direction seen in these new screenshots, I will not be disappointed.

This is really looking good. +1 Games I'll buy and not have time to play. Fahey, in addition to being my favorite Kotaku writer, you'll be my hero till Thursday if you never use "ever since" ever, ever, again.

That guy in the first screen has a tiny, tiny head.

Man, Herc needs to lay off the gyros if you know what I mean.

At first this game wasn't even in my radar, but a combination of videos with industry buzz has put it on my Top 5 most anticipated.

@cio:
It's an action RPG so most likely neither.

DO WANT.
Some of the cutscenes they've show make me cringe though. The characters' faces look so dead.
Damn you Mass Effect! You've ruined me forever with your orgasmic alien rape simulator of intergalactic dimensions!!

As long as this is more God of War than Conan, count me in.

Everything I've heard about this game looks awesome. But everything I've heard about Dead Space looks awesome too. And they may very well be super-de-duper awesome games.
But if you're coming out in Oct/Nov/Dec '08 you'd better damn well be a Must Buy game, or you're not getting bought 'till you're in the Used rack.
There are way too many games that require purchasing this fall to take a risk on something like this.

Actually, these screens do look nice. I'll wait for the gameplay though... -_- Too many game purchases of late have been on screens instead of actually seeing the gameplay in action. :(

Those are some bad-ass character models. But as it has been said by previous posters, the beauty has to go deeper than the skin for it to muscle its way into my already lengthy list of must-purchases this fall/winter.

I sure hope other things in this game will be huge. You know what I mean...yeah. Boobs.
That's what you thought I meant, right?
Good.

Nevermind, herc is chillin' behind Jason. I couldn't tell because of my monitor's stupid contrast.

After the failure of Force Unleashed, I will no longer keep my hopes up for any game. From now on everything is crap until I get a chance to try it out.

Played it at PAX. It's boring as hell... Keep on waiting Fahey, cause this isn't gonna satisfy anything if you're looking for a God of War fix...
Hercules isn't playable and you have to babysit him or he gets his ass kicked... No lie. He died on me when we were demoing the game.
light and hard attacks are the same for all the weapons. It's just another run of the mill third person hack and slash game.

Pretty sure that's Jason (leader of the Argonauts and the character you play as in the game), not Hercules. Nice nipples none the less.

Paste Cliff Blezinski's head onto Hercules' body and Kotaku has a new Dude Huge graphic.

The art design does indeed look impressive - all the gameplay videos that have been posted look pretty lame, though.

I played it at PAX too. I enjoyed it for what it was, and considering it was also a non-finished version, it looked nice.
The RPG flavor is minimal. Essentially, everytime you have a dialogue, you get 4 options each assigned to one of 4 gods. Depending on which dialogue option you choose, you'll gain "favor" with that god. Once you level out your "favoritism" with the god, you get a shiney new move that you can choose from a fairly large ability tree. Each god has their own tree and it's actually pretty impressive.
The game had some neat moves to it, quite a bit of gore, but it is fairly standard hack 'n' slash. It's not going to change the world, but if you like these types of games and the mythology, you'll probably dig this.

@Kadugen:
He fought a lion, a hydra, a golden stag, a giant boar, a giant stable full of shit, a flock of birds, a giant bull, a bunch of horses, the queen of the amazons, cattle, a 100-headed dragon, and cerberus. All in that order.
Fuck your bear.

Looks pretty good.
I would like to know where to get ab-hugging leather armour like Jason's.

@beanerific!: It's actually his skin. Every day he exposes certian part of his torso to the sun for long periods of time. The extended exposure has caused him to develop very dark, leathery skin that serves as his armor while retaining the same freedom of movement he would have if he went bare-chested.
