Who Can Make Sense Of This PlayStation 3 Ad?
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 9:40 AM on September 23, 2008
With the exception of Sony's "U R Not E" campaign and the inflicting of Saliva's godawful "Ladies and Gentlemen" upon us a countless number of times this year, we're generally fans of the PlayStation marketing machine. We even kind of liked the "This Is Living" series of non sequitors that annoyed UK gamers in 2007. That said, we're having a hard time wrapping our string of brain cells around the "Matrjoska" print ad running in Spain.
Are Sony trying to appeal to the portly gamer set who prefer to masquerade as teenage waifs online? Or is it the other way around, speaking to the blue ocean market of women with runway physiques who desperately long to be a morbidly obese and wear nothing but brown? Or is it just "Look, nipples!"? We're stumped.

I think it's a hint.
PS3 are going to redesign the console, with the 43nm chip and make it smaller and sexier ! :)

Looks to me like an ad for a slimmer line of PS3s.
Going from the fat man, to the sexy ( now female ) new slim model...

As well as what those before me have said, I think it is alos commenting on how gamers are not (mostly) overweight like the sterotype. And some are girls. right...right?...RIGHT?

i think it means:
the playstation 3 is a large piece of equipment, but you have to look past that and see what power it has on the inside.
'look past the box and see whats inside' think thats the general theme of this add

Maybe its dealing with the concept of "You don't know what its like till you have walked in there shoes" that old saying?
But honestly, just like the short paragraph below the image.. I looked at it and was just as stumped. Then I looked at the nipples..that made up for it to some degree.
Another thing, she really doesn't look all that happy. Why can't pretty women smile more? Do they really hate themselves on the inside that much?

I think the girl represents the PS3, Sony has always liked to "slim" down their models, I mean look at the psp, its already in its 3rd phase. Am sure they will slim down the PS3, and shed the layers of "fat" and end up having with what they probably consider a slimmer sexier model. Or the whole death to fat people seems to be another well made point.......

@wahrugene: Exactly! Maybe the song wasn't great but the content was awesome. Also the visual style was very very nice. He actually didn't like the two ad campaigns most people like...but to each his own.
What I find disturbing about this ad is that the guys seem pretty happy of being sliced in half and hollow...the guy at the left is having a blast. Also the guy in the right looks like a fat version of Bill Gates! The guy in the back is checking out the first guy's butt...weird.
I think the message here is that all these dudes were fat because they literally ate a girl...but in the end the girl cut them from the inside and ate all their insides. What do we learn? Don't eat a girl because she'll eat you from the inside, cut you in half and steal your ps3.

I guess the general gist of it is tha sony is destroying the stereotype of the gamer. The illustrations depicts the "real" or "inner" (in the below the surface sense) gamer who is not defined by society's normal definition of what a "gamers" is. Thus, the ad functions as a reality check for those that still look down their noses at gamers (everyone games these days), and also an invitation to those same people to overlook their ignorantly made assumptions about gamers as fat, bald losers, and give gaming a try. (afterall even this cool, cute, slim girl would give it a try).

Here's what I think:
The wooden Russian doll imagery is to indicate that she, the gamer, has multiple in-game personas that are all drastically different from her. But, at the end of the day, she's still the most important thing--she's the one controlling the in-game personas. Her being the only one standing and standing at the core of them while they're on the ground means that she is dominant. She > them. Without her, they are nothing, which is why the three personas are knocked out. She's always the core.
Also, notice that there are three personas, perhaps one for each PlayStation. That is very deliberate. She is the core of the PlayStation3 and the PlayStation3 experience--her, the individual gamer, not her personas. In other words, the consumer is more important the personalities that the consumer will assume playing PlayStation3 games.

I think this is really just trying to appeal to female gamers. Sort of the "I'm not the stereotype console" or "Even girls play PS3" deal I guess... i was going to point out that it was clearly a take on the Russian Dolls that stack inside each other, but then i realized those were actually called Matrjoska Dolls, so it was already pretty evident given the title of the piece.
as for what it all stands for, i do think its about the person behind-the-avatar... when you play someone online, you could be playing against anyone, regardless of what their avatar resembles... you could be a fat man who secretly plays as an attractive woman, or an attractive woman who secretly plays a fat man! or anything in between.

We're covered in a white thin fabric so we'll really pop in all these dark muted colors. C'mon, you know you just want to stare at all our pointy glory :D. And yes, it's not cold, we're just glad to see you ;)."
I may only have a minor in marketing, but I think it might be a tad more successful as an ad if it actually showed the product or had ANYTHING to suggest it was associated with the PS3.
Cover up the small text in the top right corner and you might as well be looking at some post modern, Dali inspired
