Atlantica Online Open Beta Launches Tomorrow
Posted by Stuart Houghton at 6:20 AM on September 24, 2008
The English translation of Korean MMO Atlantica Online has been in a closed Beta for a couple of months now, but is due to throw open the doors for any interested parties to come and have a go.
The game is set in alternate universe with a slightly steampunk bent and features a turn-based tactical combat system alongside real-time character movement and interaction.
The beta goes live at 6 p.m. Pacific Daylight Saving Time (PDT). It is a whopping 2GB PC download, so best get cracking now.

that's actually a really small download. LOTRO's trial is 8.10 gigs, and WAR's closed beta was 9 gigs or so.

@Turambar: Er, your group and 8 mercs, not nine.

@Rookerith: The thematic feel of the game changes as you go from area to area. The game starts you off in East Asia, and the story eventually moves you to South East Asia, Europe, The Middle East, etc. Africa, South America, Australia, and Siberia are noticeably absent though as explorable areas.

I played in the close beta and probably will again once OB starts.
It's different, if that says anything. Fights work like turn based combat with a time limit on turns, setting it apart from the point, click, press F1 routine of many other MMOs. Your group can have up to 9 people, you the hero and 9 mercenaries of various classes. There's a stamina system in place where you lose one STA point per fight. When your STA hits 0, your drop rate and exp rate is heavily reduced, dissuading heavy grinding. The downside is that the idea of community is pretty much hammered down your throat. Quests involving being in a party and being in a guild are story line quests, forcing you to do them and there are plenty of dungeons (particularly the ones required for quests that gets you access to more merc classes).
It's worth checking out if you're just looking for an MMO that's different from the rest. It's not exactly spectacular but worth a brief trial.

Slightly Steampunk?
It had an ancient chinese + magic feel to it when I played it. Maybe it changed, maybe it's based on your starting region. It's been 3+ months since I played, though.

@MSW0: The closed beta was pretty fun for a while. Turn-based combat can be fun with other people in your party.

@Turambar: I should expand a little. While you have an entire party of 9 at your control, monsters you fight also comes in parties, up 9 mobs per group in the really high levels. While you can party with 2 other players, monsters can also get reinforcements in the middle of the fight if the groups are close enough to each other. A youtube video of the combat might explain it better than me with words.

@Lixie: The mercs level up, and you can customize their equipment and skill set up. As for solo play, the game pretty much forces you to join a guild and as previously said, quests that gets you other merc. classes happen in dungeons you'll have to be very over leveled to do solo.
Now, there were guilds set up in Close Beta whose sole purpose was to get people past that quest, and story quests don't require you going into Shadow Dungeons, so take that how you will.

@ittekimasu: There are rifles, cannons, and an inventor class that can use machines in the game. But beyond that, there really isn't any steampunk.

@Jon-Claw: Specifically, the way the stamina system works is from level 1-50, stamina is reset at 100 each day. They don't regenerate and up to 20 can get carried over to the next day. From 50 onwards, STA is rest at 50 each day and 10 carries over. However, not fighting for 10 minutes allows for STA to regenerate by 1 point. Sharing monster information or crafting information with other players gets you 1 STA (up to 5 per day), and doing free league (PvP arena fights that happens every 3 hours) gets you some STA as well.
Basically, it's done in a way that you shouldn't run out of STA just playing normally, though you will run into problems if you try going 18 hours a day.

@Turambar: So it's a MMO with a anti-grind stance?
I've been away from MMO long enough. I'll check this out.

I'm interested in the concept of having mercenaries to aid the character. Do the mercs level up and can they be customized through skills and equipment? How viable is solo play in this game? The concept of having a player controlled PARTY is very enticing if it means I never have to party with other players.

@ComradeLewis: Not sure what the difference is exactly...but I say just go with ndoors on the safe side since even the gamengame site has the ndoors logo on the bottom.

I am so confused. There are apparently 2 websites that are nearly identical and share the same OB launch date. I have heard that 1 is for North America, and the other is International, but I can't say for sure. Anyone here know the difference?

I tried the close beta stage one, and the one major thing I didn't like about it was that everyone looked the same. Literally. Dunno if that changed or not but if it doesn't...

I actually got an invite to the closed beta, but I never did get to play.. my video card has some overheating problem that I've yet to get fixed. Anyways, I was actually looking forward to checking out this game. An MMO with turn-based combat just seems like it might be a good idea to me. To those who have tested during CB, how fun is the combat?
