Business Analyst Reckons GTA:Chinatown Wars Will Be Ported To iPhone
Posted by Stuart Houghton at 7:20 AM on September 24, 2008
Rockstar might bring GTA Chinatown Wars to the iPhone!
Well they might, who knows? Mike Hickey, analyst for Janco Partners, thinks that he does. He told Game Daily,
"We expect GTA will likely be ported to Apple's iPhone platform, leveraging the device's touch screen technology and accelerometer."Well, it was either that or leverage the Home and Wake/Sleep buttons, I suppose.

@two cans tied together and thrown down the street to wake u...: It's going to sound pretty weird when you say "This game won't be any good" AFTER you play it. You should look into something a little less predictive and more conclusive. :)

@TheHeeyyy: Easy. An analyst is a bullshit job, so they can do anything they want. You know what is coming to iPhone in 4 more months? It transforms into a flying car- if the market demand is high enough.

Holy Crap, way to condense a full press-release's worth of marketing-speak into one sentence.

@TheHeeyyy: iPhone generations 3/4/5 will take care of that.

But the iPhone only has one screen. How would a port deal with that?

GTA: Chinatown War will NOT be good or a game worth playing. Rockstar is just trying to cash in on the series. You can't take the experience of GTA and port it to the iPhone or the DS. Yes, you will say well wait until the game comes out. I will wait, I will play, and I will repeat, "This game won't be any good".

@two cans tied together and thrown down the street to wake u...: Um, didn't GTA start off as a 2D game on platforms of similar or lower power than DS? I don't see why they can't make a DS version along those lines... obviously it is not going to be anything like the full-3D ones, that goes without saying, but it doesn't necessarily have to suck.
It might do though. :) I'm going to wait until the game comes out (and if the reviews aren't good, I'm not even going to play it, thanks).

Touch screens are sooo over rated. Don't know why they think touch screens are gods gift upon humanity.

So other then touch screen for guiding your character, and using the accelerometer that obstructs your view for driving, what else would you have to use for a good control scheme?... This is why normal gaming on an iPhone is flawed other then extremely simple games, or some innovative games that take advantage on the technology rather then make it a gimmick.

So if you're playing this on your iphone, will a random cousin call you sporatically during missions to ask you if you wanted to see some "Big American Titties?"

I dunno, I just hope that we don't see games that are just FOR the iphone, because I can see the iphone as a nice little device for casual games, basically specially made cell phone games, but as a portable games device? It's a phone, with a contract and monthly fees, and all of that. If they released an iphone that wasn't really a phone, I could see it being viable, but as it stands, it's just neat little games that get ported, and hopefully not many mainstream full games.

AFAIK the game is mostly controled by the DS buttons.. touch screen being used only for some minigames.. so.. I don't see HOW this could work on an iPhone..
I doubt that this analyst read the details about the game that came out last week :P
Hell, I doubt he have even seen a DS to compare it to the iPhone!

Who cares what these guys say? Analysts don't know anything more than some random dude on the street. All these guys do is wildly speculate on a wide variety of businesses and convince other people to give them money to invest. Look up Janco Partners. It's not a research firm or Market Analyst firm or anything of the sort. It's an investment firm.
We're going to go to Jupiter in 2015 thanks to the Microsoft xXxSP4CE480C4FTxXx and we'll find out it's made of Jell-O and precious diamonds, thus becoming incredibly rich.
^ That is just as credible as anything any of these investment firm analysts come up with.

It'll never come to iPhone. Wouldn't work. It requires too much separation of the top and bottom screens. Guess this is just a case of an analyst making stuff up because he can. Who knew they could do that, eh? Oh, wait... that's right. ALL OF THEM.

@two cans tied together and thrown down the street to wake u...: Well, you're welcome to your opinion but sadly, you're wrong. And I say that as someone who's played the game, rather than just made up thoughts in my head like you're doing.

Actually, as a GTA fan, I think Chinatown Wars will be fine for the iPhone/iPod Touch. First, they have a much bigger screen than the DS (widescreen too) that allows it to display more of the HUD as well as dialogue during a cutscene that does not require a second screen.
Also, during minigames, the top half can be "overshadowed" by a bottom-half which will show the touch screen minigame, which will not happen often either, so it's fine. Or maybe, using the accelorometer to "break" the glass of your car's windshiled by thrusting the device backwards away from you.
Read more about Chinatown Wars here, and decide for yourself if it will work for the iPod Touch/iPhone: [blog.gtahq.net]

Just got my Nintendo Power, and I'm actually kind of intrigued. It just proves my theory that, even if it's a series I don't like, if you put it on a handheld I can take anywhere, I'd be more interested.
