Ghostbusters' Future Not So Ethereal
Posted by Brian Crecente at 2:00 AM on September 24, 2008
Among the many games killed, sold-off or in some sort of nebulous video game purgatory is frightening shooter Ghostbusters.
The game made a splash earlier this year with some demo time at a few events, some wayward promotional lanyards and even a bit of time in my house, but since hitting everyone's radar Ghostbusters has essentially vanished.
Now we hear that among the publishers looking to snatch up the game is Atari which hopes to not only publish the game but make it the crown jewel of their turn-around.
Emails to Phil Harrison (and hassling of the gaggle of clone Harrison running around the tower) have netted us exactly nothing. The official words from Activision are "no comment" so take this one with a grain of salt until things find a bit more solid ground.

@MSUSteve: I hope they don't do it: Indy IV, Blues Brothers 2000, the SQ prequels. They all failed to recapture the initial movie's greatness, there's no way a new GB movie is going to be as good, and making the movie solely as a launching point for a new franchise is never a good idea. If you have to make it, let the original Ghostbusters carry it on their own - I don't want Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson starring with an Aykroyd/Murray cameo.

Why the hell does no one want to publish this game? Hell, it made it's own marketing. Tons of people will get this as a day 1 buy.

@ChimDeathmonkey: Thanks for that link! I hadn't seen that. If they're going to bring together the original Ghostbusters for one last hurrah, they really need to have it be a passing the torch kind of movie so they can continue the franchise into the future. I'd love to see Ghostbusters movies continue.

HUNDREDS of god-awful games get produced every year ... I can't for the life of me figure out why this wouldn't be a slam-dunk for ANY publisher. Even if it's just a day-one-sales license-awareness-cash-in like Reservoir Dogs, The Sopranos, or Desparate Housewives ... it's got to be capable of making back its development costs.

@Walker: A theory I like is that Ghostbusters isn't a franchise that Activision can milk on a yearly basis due to the acting talent/writing being hard to round up. The theory I personally subscribe to is that the the monies paid out to various license holders, actors, writers, etc. is taking a huge bite out of any potential profit this game is going to make and that Activision didn't think it was worth the risk.

Did anyone else see that the recently resurrected Taco and Four Cheese flavors of Doritos have a promotional tie-in with the Ghostbusters video game? I don't know if this was something set in motion so long ago and that got so far it couldn't be stopped, but I'm hoping it's a sign that Ghostbusters will arrive in October as scheduled.

Worried that this will go the way of the Godfather game - "We have the original cast and recreate scenes from the original" everyone gets excited then the game completely fails to recreate anything that made the original great. Games stand or fall on their gameplay - how many Star Wars games have looked great before they came out then turned out to be turds to play. I'm holding off judgment til release...

how do they cancel a game with a built in audience, especially of parents who will be more than happy to buy it?
after the stars all sign on, right the script and record their lines and the game is almost finished?
Brutal Legend you can make a case for cancelling in the interest of dollars. But ghostbusters? do they see how much money ghostbusters has generated as a franchise?

I am not sure why so many people were high on this game anyway. I am from the generation of Ghostbusters. I used to pretend to be Bill Murray, but I wasn't all that interested in a Ghostbusters game. It seems to be getting alot of random buzz recently, the 'Buster franchise.
Well, hopefully the game just doesn't fall off into the abyss after so much work went into it, but it wouldn't be the first to do so.

@Walker: I got a chance to play a fairly recent build of it yesterday. It's not very 'WOW' gameplay-wise. I can see why someone might not want to publish yet another 3rd party shooter into a fairly saturated market.

Dang, maybe there's something wrong with me but from all the vids I've seen of Ghostbusters I thought the game looked pretty boring. I couldn't see myself spending $60 on it, that's for sure. Of course, I'm sure my parents paid quite a bit for that sorry excuse of a Ghostbusters game that I had on the Sega Master System but my parents were probably high. That being said, it looks like a rental at best but I hate to be too hard on it since I haven't actually played the game.

@MSUSteve: Giving the fact that Dan pretty much created the movies and such, I'd pretty much have to take his word for it. Besides, Bill Murray doesn't want to do a third live action movie, and people would not be happy if someone else took over the Ghostbuster's role.

@Ashkihyena: Just because Aykroyd said that the Ghostbusters game is the third movie, doesn't mean there can be an actual third movie. I think his point is, the Ghostbusters game is the third movie he would've liked to have made back when it was still possible to make it. I'm certainly not saying that an actual third movie will be made, but I don't think Aykroyd's statements about the game being the "third movie" will be what prevents it.

My local GameCrazy told me they required to refund my Ghostbusters pre-order since it was without a publisher. That news made me somewhat depressed as this was one of top 10 most anticipated games at the time. The only reasons I could see Activision dropping it is because it was going to have a development cycle longer than they were comfortable with, they didn't think it would net enough profits compared to the money they were shelling out, or they couldn't secure sequel deals in the future to molest the Ghostbusters name for over a billion dollars in the next 15 years of the ActiBlizzard empire.

I really, really hope this succeeds. But to do that, they absolutely have to fix an enormous number of things that kept the demo I played at Comicon from actually being fun. The tracking system with the PK valence meter is broken, the ghost catching mechanic is too unforgiving, and the physics get in the way more often than they wow. If they can get over those hurdles, this promises to be my favoritest game ever.

ATARI is a good home for Ghostbuster. Didn't Activision keep the license for silly games like SPYRO, over the money maker this title is Going to be? I think ATARI knows that we want this, and I bet Phil and the boys over at ATARI are fans of the movies and it was a part of their youth. The game is just about finished from what I heard, and Terminal Reality is putting the finishing touches. I think ATARI cares about this game more that a cash cow for the(albeit a cash cow they need) They would never have been able to come up with the cash to get the original movies actors to do the voices. This is going to be like squashing fish in a Barrell for ATARI, the work is done and all they have to do is ratchet up the advertising. Good luck to em, I will have the game the day it launches, on nastalgic value alone.
