Lego MMO Being Worked On By Lego ZEALOTS
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 7:30 PM on September 24, 2008
NetDevil - the guys behind the upcoming Lego MMO Lego Universe - are taking the game seriously. Very seriously. So seriously that they've made some changes to the normal development process by making use of a team of die-hard, adult, "purist" Lego fans. Lead producer Ryan Seabury explains:
We've been working with about 50 of them — and now up to 68, and it's only going to keep expanding. We've brought them out to Denver twice... the first time, it was more about getting them up to speed on the concept and what was going on and hearing a lot of feedback and opening a dialogue, and the next time we brought them back out, they actually got hands-on with the tools and the technology.Conceptually, we think of them as developers helping us build the game...You never hear about a community being involved in an MMO besides coming in at the beta test at the end. Those people that can be the most influential... [are] heavily involved and tell us what their expectations are.
I can tell you our expectations: if we can't recreate the original Lego castle, all bets are off.

I'm curious to see how this will work. Second Life with preset building blocks? A more rigid structure of quests and/or PVP?

I have to wonder, why haven't the buildings they've shown been made of Lego(s)?
(Is Lego the plural of Lego..?)

I dunno about an MMO lego game.
The movie adaptions have been great so far, I think they should just stick with that.

@Chesu: I've always been under the understanding of the plural being the same as the singular.
Although a lot of Americans call them Legos, so it could just be a geographical thing.

Seems to be some great potential! Now as long as their are no random "missing" pieces or "clean up time" then I'm sold!

@Gofthick: @Gofthick: I deal with these kind of people from time to time.
Apparently the terms are "construction brick" with the obvious plural form being "construction bricks".
Since Lego is a brand and not the name of the actual pieces.
Not sure if all Lego people feel this way.

Surprised I'm the first one that got around to this.
Either that or everyone's already seen it...

I really hope the whole system is based on taking your opponents apart.
That would kind of rock.

Alas, I'm still looking forward to the day of Lego: Knights of the Old Republic Saga! KotOR 1&2, in Lego. Plus, maybe Lego would actually sell a Lego HK-47, and I could buy him and have him rip off the arms of 'meatbags'. Maybe... one day, in a galaxy far far away.

Oh hecks yeah! I can't wait for this, and it makes me happy to know that there's a crack team of elite LEGO obsessives who are dorking out over it to help the devs. Good! My expectations: build the Black Seas Barracuda and take Captain Redbeard on a raiding party, from the Rock Island Refuge to the Eldorado Fortress. Governor Broadside, you're goin' down!
And then maybe some Blacktron in outer space!

@Chesu:
"LEGO" (which is supposed to be in all-caps) is treated as an adjective, not a noun. Therefore the plural of "LEGO" is "LEGO bricks", "LEGO parts", "LEGO pieces", or any other similar word combination.
@Silent_X:
"Construction brick" is a generic term, which could refer to cinder blocks just as easily as it could to LEGO bricks. And it depends on what you mean by "LEGO people". People within the LEGO Company are, I'm sure, very aware of the danger of dilution of brand identity (look what happened to Bayer's Aspirin trademark), so I expect they'd all toe the company line. In the world of AFOLs, things aren't always so simple. There are fans who will flat out refuse to treat "LEGO" as an adjective for no other reason than that they were told to do so. Many are just so used to saying "LEGOs" that they do so out of habit, even though they know it's not correct usage of the trademark. Many of those people will do that in private, but still try to do right by the trademark when dealing with the public at large.

@markusdragon:
That is actually a very complicated term. There are purists who feel that if you put an official LEGO set sticker on a part that it was not intended to be used on, that's not "pure". Others feel that as long as it came from an official LEGO sticker sheet (including the filler), it's okay to use it anywhere. Some feel that making your own stickers is okay, and that's just dealing with stickers.
Then there's part modification. Some are cool with it on the basis that the LEGO Master Model Builders are known to do it when necessary, while others only do it to parts that _we_ are asked to cut up, like pneumatic hose. And then there's the custom part market, where people make LEGO-compatible parts that are intended to fill (perceived) gaps in the official part catalog.
Now, for full clone brands (i.e. _not_ the custom supplementary stuff), there are basically two camps that can justify calling themselves LEGO purists. One says that _all_ clone brands are bad, and the other is okay with using any clone brand that is made of a similar quality as real LEGO parts (the only brand I know of is Tyco, but they got forced out through legal proceedings several years ago). Both Megabloks and Best-Loc are cheap crap, and most people that will actually buy them don't buy LEGO sets because they cost so much more.

Why can't anyone make a cool MMO? Lego MMO? WTF? Star Trek MMO? Thanks, but no thanks. Warhammer MMO? I'm getting tired of orcs, trolls, and dwarves. Where is my All Points Bulletin? Where is my Champions Online? And Where is my (Dare I say it?!) Huxley ?
