LEGO Super Mario Cheats With 3D Scanner
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 10:20 AM on September 24, 2008
No doubt there are LEGO architects in the wild who consider this a horrible affront to blocksmithing, but this 29" tall Mario sculpt is obsessively well done. And we're not just using the "obsessively" adjective because the final product was photographed in front of what appear to be Super Mario Bros. wall decals from Blik, we use it because he over-teched it.
The creator used a "NextEngine 3D scanner, modo and big pile of Lego" to get the job done. The final product? Awesome. In-progress pics are available, in case you're wondering exactly what a NextEngine 3D scanner is. (Formal apologies to anyone who thought this post was going to be about Traveller's Tales getting the Mario license.)

That is a beautiful piece of work.
The most I can do is a 2d Super Mario Brothers sprite Lego.
A man can dream.

It is very awesome, and I'm sure my brothers would love to kick it over.

Why can't people create real-life video game art/objects based on something other Mario, just for once.

Epic work. It doesn't matter how old you are, Lego's are always cool.

That's cool. I'm a little bugged that he didn't manually correct Mario's left eye.

There was actually an article in the most recent Game Developer magazine about this nice little piece of kit. I'd love to have me one of these!

The NextEngine 3D scanner is a fine tool to use. It makes it so much easier to create your own 3d models, without the knowledge or skills in 3d modeling. Problem is, it's $3 Large to buy it.

Impressive. Regardless of creation from scratch, they both put in the massive hours of sore fingers.

Lego's indirectly lead to my interest in gaming... I played with Lego's at like 6 years old until someone showed me Lego Island the PC Game (best GTA clone-EVER) which lead to me taking interest in my friends Goldeneye on the N64- which lead to The Sims (somehow) than to Red Alert 2, then AoE II , and then - well it just went up and up from there. So yeah, Lego's are what got me into games... rant rant rant...
Anyhow this guy did an awesome job- nice to see dedication to something that is actually quite cool.

You know what'd be awesome? If you went to sleep one day and the next this thing would be standing right by your bed. I'd explode with happiness.

@TheXanadu:
Lego Island owned. While it didn't get me into gaming, as a child I fully completed it several dozen times. Excellent game for the younger crowd.
Remember: you can build a mountain, if you do it brick by brick!

Reminds me of Code Veronica.
Maybe that puzzle would be more fun if it involved Legos instead of some weird metal alloy.

That is pretty sweet. Don't see much problem with the methodology, either. But then again I've only ever been able to make anything using instruction booklets.
Side note: "obsessively" is an adverb. True story. :P

I don't think the method for doing a job is as important as good results, which obviously this guy got in spades. A fantastic model and bugger taking weeks to work it out and do it by hand. Technology is there to help...Most of the time...

Excellent work. And who cares how he did it? Different artists use different methods, and it's their own choice if they use a method which makes the job easier. Then again, I'm the type where if I ever draw anything, I'll do it with ruler to make sure everything is straight and perfectly symmetrical, so I'm biased towards perfectionism over raw talent.
But I've got to ask: do his shoes look like they should go out farther, or is it just the angle?

@blizzardjesus: And you will end up overpaying. Bricklink.com usually offers much better prices. Building something that large is still going to be fairly expensive.

Glad you liked it! Actually his feet are slightly longer than they should have been. I stretched them by a couple of lego blocks in length to make it more stable. Cheers, Keith (the guy who built it).
