they're not terrible, but they're not okay... what bothers me most is how big ken is in proportion to chun-li/ryu at the bottom of the cover... even though that's the angle/perspective, it still looks (as we say in the ghetto) "deflicted".

@FrigidAir44: Leaving the cloud characters subtle works pretty well, actually. If they were coloured and more obvious, you'd have a bland mess. Instead you have a nice clear focus on a single striking character, with a little subtle detail in the background to make it more interesting.

Also I'm amused at the 'wasted space' concept (somebody else said it too). Good visual design does not consist of filling every square millimetre with artwork. Whitespace isn't wasted space. [That may not have been what you meant, it just came across that way.]

I think the Chun Li cover looks reasonably decent. The Ryu one, not so much (goatse or not, his hands just look like a confused mess). Neither are exactly going to blow anyone's mind but they're not terrible.

Seriously though (on topic) I think that the Ryu one should be used. Isn't he the main character? Unless the story in it is focused on Chun Li it should be Ryu, no matter how cheesy the cover looks. I don't even think it needs character art on the screen. Super SF 2 just had the title with a brickwall background. A little 90's but it worked and the game was where your attention was at anyway. This will be the same.

I would try and use the characters to create more depth by making them larger and slightly covering up the logo. the logo doesn't hurt my eyes too bad. I think Chun-li is at her usual strength. I'm pretty sure she could have competed in the Moscow Olympics (not sure what you meant by that). Over all, it needs a little more work.

@Spedfrom: Sometimes it's difficult in a situation like this to not put out fingers on the designer(s). But most of the times this is not the case. We often come up with an awesome idea and the implementation is just pure awesomeness.

But then we have to deal with the client (in this case maybe Capcom) who most of the time don't have any art background or whatsoever which makes our life even more difficult. Then we have to deal with their legal department, which sometimes they have their own thoughts and ideas. Most of the time you can't say no to them. They are the one who pays the bill.

Which I think also the reason why the other day Leo Burnett (one of the big agencies) decided to seperate way with Nintendo (I heard they are such a hard client to work with).

Whack directors at Capcom USA, no wonder a majority of them got fired or were ask to resign. They got a bunch of non talented people(with master degrees with no art background) over there making bad decision. If you notice the quality of art work coming out from there, you'll see what I'm talking about. Very poor quality control. The games are great but to have bad graphics and ideas associated with the game is unacceptable. Capcom use to be great but now they're just mediocre. Lucky for Capcom USA, the name still carries them.

Just color the charaters on the clouds a bit and the chun-li would look better.

Coming from someone who doesn't play street fighter, I don't think the art looks THAT bad. I mean It's certainly much better than the slop developers have fed us when making us decide the cover art. Web of shadows and Resistance anyone?

Chun Li's pose and art is fine, but the logo is pretty stupid. And yes, Ryu looks awful.

I dunno, I think that box art shouldn't sell a game. So it doesn't matter much to me.

I agree that the Ryu cover is a bit subpar...but I actually kind of like the Chun Li cover. Maybe we've all just come to expect orgasmic works of art from Capcom, with their Udon Studios just pushing out the awesome 24/7 (which, as it so happens, is one of my absolute favorite studios right up there with the studio that did the works of Magna Carta), but really...I don't see the butch side that Mr. Houghton is remarking on in Chun Li's case.

Now I will say if Sakura was more present on the cover I'd give it a higher grade, personally...
