Valve Would Love To Do Wii Games, MMO (But They're Not!)
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 5:30 PM on September 24, 2008
Valve make PC games. They port em over to consoles, sure, but at heart, they're a PC developer. But what if they were more than that? What if they decided to start making Wii games, or MMO games? Team Fortress Summer Party? World Of Black Mesa? It'd be hilarious. And it's something Valve would love to do. Except, uh, they won't. Not unless you or anyone you know knows magic.
GN: The thing is I'm a big fan of the Wii in terms of a lot of the interesting things that it does, and we have absolutely zero Wii games in development. There's always so much more that we'd like to do that we could do. We have a bunch of MMO fans inside of the company that would kill to be working on an MMO....
1UP: ...including you?
GN: Myself included. [Laughs] A Wii MMO! Woo-hoo! We have nobody working on such a beast. Magically, if we could increase ourselves in size, then we can do a lot more of this stuff.
Don't know about magic, Gabe, but we hear cash money works just as well with that sorta stuff.

@ittekimasu: There is a .hack game coming to the DS at some point, but no one knows when. Not an MMO obviously.

Well Valve might make something amazing on the Wii if they set themselves onto it. An MMO though?... Make it wrong/too boring/un-innovative and it'll tarnish their rep, however blind Valve followers would probably eat up a MMO based on the Half Life Universe... Imagine being a rebel and accidentally be sent to Xen to hunt 10 Headcrab egg sacks? Hmm...

Didn't Crytek also say they had something in development that wouldn't see release for a while sometime last year? There's been no word of that lately.
In fact, id said the EXACT same thing, until Carmack recently said they didn't have any plans for Wii/ DS development.
Oh wait, didn't Blizzard have that one survey asking about Diablo on the DS...?
It's like every big PC developer was at least considering working on the Wii at some point and then ditched the idea. I can still totally see Crytek (what with their shift to consoles and all) and Blizzard (easing their way from PC to handheld to consoles) doing something for Wii and DS respectively.
Fingers crossed.

A TF2 party game? Now THAT'S a party game I'd play!
What kind of games would there be?
Scout's Home Run Derby?
Heavie's Sandvich Eating Contest?
Whack-a-Sentry?
THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS, VALVE. GET ON IT.

@RedRaptor: I was just thinking about this and the possibilities. If done right, and with the same bright, cheery tone with the morbid undertones (ie, in the scout home run derby you're hitting Spy skulls), it could be fun / funny.

Completely ignoring the best part of the article:
1UP: The Wii obviously has a huge install base. Third-parties have been cranking out Wii games left and right, and very few have been successful. And they're generally not that fun. You have obviously looked into the hardware -- what do you think companies need to do to make a good Wii game that also appeals to hardcore gamers? What do you think is lacking?
GN: The Wii is no different than 3D. After Doom came out, there were literally 400 Doom clones that came out over the next 18-24 months. Most of them were really terrible. Everybody saw that there was an opportunity, and people's attempts to exploit that opportunity were pretty feeble. I think the Wii is the same way. Everybody was ignoring it until launch; people weren't expecting it to do well; there wasn't a ton of third- party development investment going on -- and then it exploded. And then everybody immediately raced to ship Wii titles as fast as they possibly could. I think the quality really suffered.
You have to really think hard [about] what makes a game better with that kind of input system and how to do it. I don't think there is anything fundamentally casual versus hardcore about the opportunity it represents -- the difference between being thoughtful about your game design and how you're taking advantage of the platform versus "Oh my god! We have to have some Wii product shipping [so] that we can make some money and take advantage of this huge unexpected groundswell."

WTF!! valve is just a big lazy stubborn grumpy old man that refuses to change with the world around it. I understand you love PS's but if you want money you are going to have to branch out.

I would really appreciate it if developers started treating the Wii as the lead SKU just ported Wii games to the PS3/360. It is the market leader afterall.
Why should the Wii be any different from the PS1/PS2?
Answer: It shouldn't!!!

Hmmm, having problems posting replies.
Anyway while Valve makes a good amount of money off of Steam the cost of creating a game for a console your currently have zero support for is expensive even for well-off companies.
You have to pay for the devkits, hire programmers or train your current ones to work with the SKU (the latter not only costs money but takes away talent from your other platforms), marketing, and you also have to form a QA department. And that's all BEFORE the costs of the actual development come into play.
So while Nintendo and Sony fanboys cry, bitch, moan, and call Gabe fat, there are perfectly legit reasons for not supporting certain consoles. Besides the fact that, you know, they simply don't have to support it if they don't want to.

@mlubczyk: It's hard to port shitty graphics to a console with good graphics. It's also hard to go from a motion controller, to a fixed controller. Harder then it is to go from good graphics/fixed controller to shitty graphics/motion controller.
Also, I'm willing to bet that xbox360 and ps3 fans buy more games, more often. They have the hardcor gaming fans that drop $149 on special editions of games.

Well Valve is a very small company. I'm always amazed at how quickly the credits go by at the end of one of their games compared to most other company's titles.
I do think the world of Half-Life 2/Portal could make for a very interesting MMO but I won't hold my breath.

Aside from Portal, I doubt any Valve game would be worth playing on the Wii. However if they created a new IP specifically for the Wii, I'm sure they could make it work.
