Vanguard Still Wants You Back, Won't Stop Calling
Posted by Mike Fahey at 12:40 AM on September 24, 2008
Sony Online Entertainment's Vanguard: The Saga of Heroes has gone through some pretty big changes over the past several months, including the introduction of new character models and an all-new starting area to take players through to level 10 called the Isle of Dawn, and they'd like you to come try it out again, if that wouldn't be too much of an imposition. Players with deactivated accounts (like me!) will be able to log into the game from now until October 18th for free, continuing their aborted adventures or starting up a new character to try out the Isle. Returning players who progress through the Isle of Dawn into the mainland and then reactivate a paying subscription will receive a free pair of Gnomish Rocket Boots (no relation) to help speed you on your way.
As I've said before, Vanguard has some very good things going for it, and my time in the game was certainly enjoyable to a point. I'd check in again if I had the time, but with the end-of-the-year gaming spectacular in full swing I won't have the time. Anyone still playing out there that can give us the down-low? Worth the reinstall, or no?

I still am wondering if SOE will meger Vanguard and EverQuest together. So if you have both games you can go into each world.

Is there a trial for it? I wouldn't mind trying it out, I was in the Open Beta and didn't like it, but I keep hearing how much it has changed.

I'd try it but I'm not looking forward to the 10gb patch I'll have to download.

Havn't touched Vanguard since its laggy beta. While it might have gotten good and polished by now, I'm much more into WAR for the time being.

I remember the dissapointment of this game. I will say, though, that I'm interested to try this game out again 2 years later.
Remember when Brad McQuaid left? LOL what a punk.

^ Long time and current player of Vanguard.
Most of the time when I mention Vanguard, people talk about how bad it was in the month after release. The game has been out for a long time now. There has been people working on it since then. The game is not like that now.
They have added a good amount of content including plenty of high level and raid content.
The game is significantly more stable and less resource intensive.
Overall the game is more fun now than it was. I would say reinstall and try it. What's the cost?
ALSO NOTE:
Was not mentioned in the post but SOE also now offers a Free 14-Day trial for new players downloadable from the VanguardSoH.com website.

@MSUSteve: how is that by the way compared to WoW and AoC?

I'd be more than happy to do this if I wasn't currently playing Warhammer Online.

Yeah I installed it last week and played a little its much better, still a few annoying things. I would probably play it more if I didn't have classes

@PsycheE:
WAR has an advertising budget, where as Vanguard gets nothing from SOE for advertising.

Vanguard wants you back, but the giant WAR banner says otherwise.

It's not bad, it's not good either. I got it after the original post a few weeks ago for $7 on ebay. I've been playing a Shaman for about a week. It's a very interesting game, but for some reason my ping never drops below 174. It's quite annoying running around town and seeing people "teleport" and skate around, while you calmly walk. If I had the choice....I don't know. I'd probably go back to AoC. The game has almost no players past the Isle of Dawn. And nobody really talks either. The players seem real friendly though.

I've been playing Vanguard this week, and I'm enjoying it a lot. If you're a fan of old school RPGs or MMOs, it's pretty much the only thing on the market that takes its design cues from that era. Lots of interesting quests, immersive world lore, excellent systems design (combat, diplomacy, crafting), and 24 hours of atmospheric music...
But if you're looking for a modern MMO, it certainly cannot contend with WOW, LOTRO, or WAR. It's a pretty niche product, but one that I happen to enjoy.

I'm trying to find a correlation or a comparison of sorts to get my head around MMO's today.
The 800 pond Gorilla is there but there are some other very worthy games too.
In what other industry is there anything close to the disparity of WoW compared to other MMO's? Toyota is good but that comparison is weak. Tiger Woods might be closer.
WoTLK will make more money as an expansion than most other MMO's will as a whole. The perfect storm of timing and content and system requirements will likely never be seen again but there are so many other good MMO's out there, just not even close to the draw of WoW.
I think it will never change and my favorite games are EQ2 and AoC. I'd love to have a 3 week vacation just to spend on learning how to play EvEonline also.

I'd look into it if the account activation server wasn't down for maintenance with no ETA of coming back.

@RET_Ghost: I'm almost strictly a PVEer but WAR has finally converted me. For a new MMO it's remarkably polished and the way they integrate public quests and open PvP battlegrounds into the game world is genius.
With that said, I don't plan on giving up my WoW account, but WAR is pretty damn great so far. I got tired of AoC like two days into my sub but I've been playing WAR obsessively since launch.

I tried it out, and was really impressed with it, until the game constantly bugged up on me and froze almost every 20 min. Maybe its my computer, but I don't think so because I'm playing EQ2 at almost the highest graphics. If the game ran well, and didn't have annoying music, I'd probably 'hit it'

I played Vanguard at launch and it was too buggy for my tastes and haven't played it since. I wouldn't mind going back in and seeing if they fixed it all but I think I'd rather stick with WAR since all my friends are playing it. :D

Thanks! I checked that site a week or so ago when the update first came out and couldn't find the Free Trial Option. I might give it a shot over the weekend :)

This game is great (besides the bad release). I played for about 2-3 months on release and then again xmas 2007 when it was free for old subscribers. They implemented a lot of fixes before and after that, but it was still a great time. I wish I could get back into it, but my computer cant handle it now. boo.
Vanguard is a lot slower leveling wise. Massive world too. If you like a slower paced game when you really get sucked into and feel apart of them vanguard is your mmo. Compared to WoW, it is more challenging, you have to think. I dont know about AoC though.
IT LIVES!!!
