Women Choose Video Games Over Sleep
Posted by Mike Fahey at 1:40 AM on September 24, 2008
While I knew that 99.99% of women would rather play video games than sleep with me, the results of a poll conducted by women's website PoshMama.com for E for All discovered that many of them would rather play games than sleep period. The website polled 120 women, and then dug some interesting statistics out of the 71% of women who tested gaming-positive. For instance, many of the women admitted to playing video games when they should be doing more important things, such as sleeping (more than 33%), on the phone (32%), or while at work (20%). A whopping 53% admitted that gaming had made them late for family and social gatherings.
Hit the jump for more results from the E for All / PoshMama survey. Just keep one thing in mind - this is a poll from a women's exclusive website, meaning at least 50% of the respondents are men claiming to be women who think men are icky and want to experience a more feminine touch.
Study Reveals Women Choose Video Games Instead of Sleep
E for All and PoshMama.com survey investigates the untold video game habits of women
E for All 2008
FRAMINGHAM, Mass.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Results from a survey recently fielded by Entertainment for All® Expo (E for All®), the consumer video game expo held October 3-5, 2008, in Los Angeles, and PoshMama.com, an online community exclusive to women around the world, indicate some surprising trends relating to women and video games. Front and center: many women would rather play video games than catch up on sleep, according to the new survey which polled more than 120 PoshMama members on their video game habits. Responses were gleaned from the high percentage of female respondents (71%) who said that they play video games.
According to the E for All / PoshMama survey, more than one-third of those surveyed say that they play video games when they should be sleeping. Women in the survey also say they play video games in other unusual circumstances, including: while on the phone (32%); while at work/in a meeting (20%); and, while preparing for work (12%). When it comes to spare time, nearly twice as many women say that, if given an extra hour of free time at home, they would rather play video games than catch up on sleep.
"Playing video games is becoming an increasingly popular pastime for women, which isn't surprising given that it's a great way to spend time with family and friends, have some fun and even blow off some steam," said Heather Weaver, Technology Contributor at PoshMama.com and author of GeekMomMashup.com, who helped create the survey. "The surprising element, as revealed in our survey, is that it is actually keeping women up at night. This and the other results reveal that the traditional video game industry has fundamentally changed--and will continue to evolve--as more and more women take over the video game controls."
"Video games are truly entertainment for all — from busy women to hard core game players — and E for All reflects that both in name and in its wide array of products, tournaments, appearances, and other exciting events," said Mary Dolaher, Chief Executive Officer of IDG World Expo, which owns and operates E for All. "This survey shows that many women place great value and high priority on video games in their lives, and E for All will be the place for them, their families, and gamers of all types to be this October."
Other results from the E for All / PoshMama survey include:
Better late than never: More than half of respondents (53%) reveal that playing video games has made them late for meeting up with friends and family. In addition, almost one-fifth (18.5%) say video games have made them late for work or a meeting, and the same number (18.5%) report that playing has made them tardy for a personal appointment, such as a visit to the dentist or doctor.
Refrigeration not needed: If given extra spending money, women in our survey reveal that they would rather buy a new video game system for their family over a home appliance, or even accessory for their car (i.e. spoiler, sound system, etc).
Simply put, it's fun for the family: Almost two-thirds of respondents (64%) say they play video games because they either enjoy it or they want to spend time with friends and family.
The survey was conducted in September 2008.

Survey has some bias in the fact people who actually cared would answer, ie the girls who play games and can relate to the question.

@Anaralia:
Don't make the mistake of extrapolating the data to the entire population of women. I would wager the percentage of gamers is simply higher among those who are members of that website.
It suggests a correlation between those women and gaming, but nothing more.

Yeah, I'm definitely gonna go with "solitaire" as my scapegoat for a large chunk of those numbers.
I'm certain that if they also tested men (aged 18>) that a lot of the reasons respondents would say yes to "while on the phone", "while at work", "while preparing for work", "late for work or a meeting", and "being tardy for personal appointment" is because of solitare and/or any other built in windows game (freecell, that pinball game, hearts, minesweeper, etc.)

I keep reading all these articles about female gamers, and how they love games as much as guys and/or are everywhere.
Yet, in the real world, I've yet to meet any that even have played solitare. Moving to a new town, I've had to meet a lot of new people and make new friends. I've met and hung out with several gamer guys so far, and I've met at least the same amount of girls that show nothing but the upmost disguist at anything gaming related.
And I work at a large IT/Computer company that I probibly shouldn't name here. So I'm guessing it'd be 10x worse at any other corporation.
That's just my experience on the whole 'gamer girl' thing.

Being female myself, (just to check *looks down* Yup boobs still present and accounted for)I know a lot of female gamers, yes they play solitaire sometimes, but who doesn't?
I tend to play WoW, Gears of War (Baird and Carmine for the win), Dynasty Warriors, Resident Evil, Parasite Eve, Final Fantasy, Pheonix Wright, Soul Calibur, Street Fighter, Rock Band, Time Crisis, Guitar Hero and many, many others.
We do exist guys.. and maybe if some of you didn't act like you had found a new messiah and kept those gaping mouths closed whenever you met us, maybe we'd be that much more willing to introduce ourselves as "Gamer girls".

I pick gaming over a lot of things. It's regularly listed as a hobby (more than often twice) of mine whenever I post somewhere. It's apart of my life and something all of my family and friends realize is important to me. I even wrapped my journalism major around it, produced a podcast for fun, it doesn't surprise me that women who do game would game seriously.
Funny enough my parents, both in their 50s and have been gaming since they were developed (and still do!), asked why it was so difficult to find someone when my interest is in a world dominated by males. I find it just as hard, it's a two way street.

finding female gamers? it is all about where you look. a lot of the guys that i've heard make the claim that they can't find the gamer girls (interesting, consider i'm a gamer myself) are attracted to the overly made up, short skirted, hair styled, likes to dance in the club type ladies those untouchable snobs whose main priority is their appearance and "reputation."
in my experience, the gamer girls are often far more down to earth than the obvious playboy bunny ideal too many guys seem to pointlessly chase after.
then the claim is made that they have nothing in common with girls, or that girls don't like to do anything fun.
you get what you unconsciously seek gentlemen.
this is obviously not true in all cases. but i've seen it happen a lot over the years.

While I'm dealing with sexist stereotypes here, let me talk to the poor guy who doesn't know any women who game in his new company. I think this might be age-related. People have less time in a new career than when they are students. The only time Moms have to themselves is when everyone is at work/school or asleep. Otherwise you are at the disposal of the whole family. Depending on one's industry, the younger females may be buying into more "girly" sterotypes of how to behave. I didn't game at all between 30 and 40--I was just too busy working two jobs. See if the lack of female gamers in the workplace holds true in ten years when they are mothers with kids to teach to play or in 20 years when they start to have a little free time.

Pretty much. And then sometimes when I don't think about MGS I think about scaling the walls like in Assassin's Creed. Ugh the boredom that is work. But seriously though I really do lose sleep because of video games lol.

@Grumpz®: Exactly. This wasn't a poll of what ALL women would prefer. They specifically state that these numbers are out of the 71% of women who already consider themselves gamers. Honestly, this would be more shocking if they DIDN'T prefer games over sleeping.

Where are these girls who would rather play games than sleep with me. All i find are girls that want to sleep with me (not all girls, i have to point out!), rather than play videogames. Though, i do find girls that go on about playing videogames to try and impress me, which actually only makes me feel bad. =(

You know, been an avid gamer all my life, but rather than consider say I'm a "girl gamer" I just think of myself as a person who loves video games and happens to be female. I never think about my gender while playing, so why should it matter? Most of my female friends are also gamers, and none of us are the type to constantly wear anime t-shirts or gothloli dresses or cosplay or whatever it is that "girl gamers" wear.
If you can't find female gamers, it's probably because there's no way to tell if the average woman plays video games unless you bother to ask her. The alternative are the types who advertise it constantly and allow their hobbies to dictate who they are as a person, but I don't think those people are in the majority, nor do I think they're the type most desired by a lot of men.
That said, don't count on a female gamer automatically falling in love with you just because you both have the same hobby. I have a boyfriend who is terrible at video games. It took him about two weeks to finish Portal, even knowing exactly what to do after watching me beat it in a couple of hours. I get frustrated with his constant dying and refusal to accept video game logic (No, you can't reuse that key. No, you can't swim past the invisible wall.), but I wasn't necessarily looking for a fellow gamer when I started dating him. Sorry, but that's the truth.

I've known alot of people through the course of my 19 year life and the closest to a gamer girl i have ever come across is the "Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts have great stories and cute characters" fan girl types who buy the games and end up reading the plot or youtubing it because they couldn't be bothered to finish the game.
Then there was that one World of WarCraft exception.

You also need to look where they are getting their data from. The most important thing is that they got their data from a poll on a WEBSITE, which means that these women have been introduced to technology. This leads me to suspect that 71% of women on the internet, or on that site are gamers, but not 71% of women in general. Also if you look at the website it is marketed to a YOUNG crowd of mothers, which means that they are even more likely to be gamers. If it was by a website for senior women that number would be lower. You need to look at the wording see WHO was polled, because it was a specific target group.

@Mommar: don't let others be to hard on you. I actually agree on this one as a female. If my partner is working to support both of us its my job to keep things running smooth at home, and I expect the same from them (granted my BF is unemployed right now and is having trouble with this, but he is looking for a new job and still tries to clean.)
I am guilty of gaming instead of cleaning, sleeping, or other things.
but, sex comes before gaming....or after sometimes depending on the game.

Also I'm pretty sure this was a specific focus group they pulled the results from.
