@armchairnixon: The business on the 29th isn't an update. It's "maintenance". When you come back on after the outage, you won't notice anything different.

They're just using that day to get the whole system ready for when the update launches sometime later.

The update on the 29th is some of the background stuff to keep the actual final download smaller and to do some testing. You won't notice anything new when Live comes back on after the downtime.

Sure, the avatars look dumb, and immature- but I like the "cover-flowish" theme of the new "experience"- I remember reading an article in some game-mag that stated "The dashboard needs a graphic overhaul, something like what coverflow did for Apple" and well here you have it... Of course people will complain, but that is what people do- look at new facebook and all of the billions of "wa wa new facebook sux" status updates...

Anyhow, I'm excited for the chat features, the "dash in game" feature, lobbies, and most importantly for me- resolutions- I'm on a 1080p monitor, but my resolution for it is something like 1920x 1200 instead of the standard 1080p res. so it won't display, forcing me to run my xbox 360 in 1024x 1280...

@Barf#1: I know people are going to disagree with this comment because likely they don't know what I'm talking about but if you do you have to realize that we're playing the same games with better pictures. Just like bluray movies yes they look better but it's the same old stuff the majority of it. With this update Microsoft has done more copying and pasting than an 8th graders english essay. Honestly where's all the creative talent and why can i only afford two games new games a year with the prices being so ridicuously high these days. I haven't bought disc based game since last year. Only stuff i can afford is with my dads credit card on the PSN. Games are too expensive for the average person these days and no one is willing to risk so much money on something their unsure of which is why we as consumers are treated to countless shooting games and generic sports titles. It's what a majority buy because they know what to expect.

Not to sound too fanboyish but this is nice and all but it's also a direct rip off of both Nintendo and Sony. Now before you start hatin YES I KNOW THAT THIS HAPPENS ALL THE TIME!!! But after this i dont want to hear any more fanboy's claiming their systems best because as we can all see each at this point have all copied each other and led to well motion sensing PS3 controllers and xbox controllers. Microsoft ripping off Nintendo's Mii's and Nintendo well i don't know where the hell they got their idea but that little white box a.k.a. gamecube squared, is beatin the crap out of Sony and Microsoft. Let me ask everybody a question. What the hell is wrong with the games industry. Jesus I don't even want to imagine next generation but guys look we're a year away from the reveal of the new systems. I love the whole new dashboard idea. It's sorta like when they released the bikes update for Burnout Paradise. You get new, free content without having to shell out more money. Though I was hoping for an October release..I can't wait!

I hope they let each profile create more than just one avatar. I'd like a group of customized avatars to pick from, like with the characters in Rock Band 2.

I'm feelin' that this may tie in pretty close with the release of Lips too; making for a greater Microsoft push towards the casual parket; streamlined, simpler interface, cutesy avatars, and massmarket karaoke game - with Live Marketplace songs all at once. Imagine how crazy Europe will go?

new display res and aspect ratio support: awesome. with my 16:10 computer CRT over VGA, a bunch of pixels on each side get cut off do to the stupid way MS poorly implemented 1080p

I'm not sure I'm sold on the new theme and format yet though... what about the old themes and the people who bought them?

@HELLSRIDER: Yup your so right. I am installing any game I own. I have the Elite 120 GB drive. So I still have over 90Gb of free space. I will delete all videos and music. As I want the space just for gaming. Not only will it help with load times but you also won't have to listen to the loud DVD drive spinning the disk...yahooooooooooooo

This MONDAY XBL will be down for around 24hrs as stated on Major Nelson's blog. So This just tells me that Nov. will be the latest that the update will launch but it doesn't mean that we won't get it sooner than Nov. either..? LoL

Look at Playon from Mediamall if you want to play with Netflix sooner. I've been mucking with the beta. It is stable with Youtube, occasionally works with Hulu, and I'm running it in a VM.

They've promised that Netflix will be stable (as Netflix has a proper API) and will be released any day now.

I thought that Microsoft did tell us we were getting Halo news today.....
