Mirror's Edge To Inspire Future Battlefield Games
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 9:30 PM on September 25, 2008
Remember: DICE are developing Mirror's Edge now, but once that's done, they'll be back to working on their bread & butter, the Battlefield series. And once they go back, they'll be taking some of Mirror's Edge with them, in the form of the game's sense of "physicality". DICE's Owen O'Brien:
I'm not sure [about] wall-running, but certainly the others — certainly the sense of physicality in the world: the running, jumping, vaulting, [and] sliding...I think, yeah, we will definitely try to incorporate them into future Battlefield games.
Shame. No wall-running? Battlefield could really have done with a parkour class, would have blown the game wide open.

Hopefully future battlefield games will control better than the last one did...
2142 infantry combat was about as responsive as taking a sprint through a swamp filled with crocodiles.

Nice. With the destruction present in Bad Company, and how much further that could be taken with PC, having a more nimble character that could leap distances could make for a very interesting gameplay dynamic.

That would be totally sweet, running and gunning across the tops of roofs, while folks shoot at you from the ground levels. It would be like the Matrix, the original movie, not the sequels. At least it would be till someone breaks out a tank and blows up the wall you were about to climb up.

I've always loved how rendering a body and movements more realistically makes the game seem that much more real. In games like Thief The Dark Project, Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, and even Halo 3, being able to look down and see your feet/shadow, along with seeing your bodies animations match the situation and movements, really solidifies how the game "feels" to me. Conversely, in, say, Half Life 2, where you are just a floating crowbar/set of hands, it seems that much more detached from the world. Not that I didn't love HL2, but having your entire body rendered just makes the game feel that much more immersive to me.

"Battlefield could really have done with a parkour class, would have blown the game wide open."
That would be awesome! :) Though, I still don't think it would be enough to convince me to buy another Battlefield. :( I tried it and hated it so much. The fact that longtime players had such a huge advantage from unlocking weapons made getting into hard. No clear objectives made each level a DM sandbox that often meant running around trying to find where the action is. You're in a battlefield, you shouldn't have to go looking for combat. I liked that it was tactical, but that was thrown to the wind because everyone just used vehicles to bombard the crap out of everything, relegating ground troops to useless fodder.
All of those reasons are why I sold it and bought Quake Wars instead. I prefer the advance/defend objective-oriented gameplay so that you always knew where to go for combat. Ground troops are useful and relegate vehicles to being useless is many cases. You get rewards and power ups for how well you do, but those are reset once you finish the campaign (3 mission set) or match, putting everyone back on even footing. It made the game much more about skill rather than grinding stats to get game-unbalancing guns. And yes, if a gun gives you vast power over someone new, that is unbalanced, unfair, and very deterring for a new player.

@enewtabie(Future LittleBigPlanet Master Creationist): I don't know about that. Nothing I've seen states this.
Starting September 26th, players who pre-order Mirror's Edge at selected retailers will get an exclusive code that unlocks the Time Trial mode in the demo.
Time Trial mode challenges players to find the fastest route across the rooftops and through the streets. Players can upload their best time to the Mirror's Edge leaderboards for their friends to download and compete against. Players can see their friend's 'ghost' run as they race their way through the course to the top of the leaderboards. -
If you're really a big fan, you get a Runner Bag preordering from GameStop:
GameStop Exclusive Mirror's Edge Runner Bag
* Identical in-game bag carried by Faith and other Runners to transport sensitive information in a world totally monitored by the government.
* Fits your PS3, XBOX360, or laptop for gaming on the run.
* Seven individual compartments keep your information safe and secure at all times.
* Adjustable shoulder strap and handles included.
* Pre-order your bag today, while supplies last.
(same source as above)
FWIW, I ordered my PC version. $10 cheaper than console. :p

Weren't all these features (again except wall-running) implemented in the massively under-rated 'Breakdown' on the original Xbox?
I don't see why no one would try to create a new style of combat using a more fluid and parkour style movement system. I mean in the most basic examples from 'Gunz' to 'S4 League' there definitely seems to be a lot of promise there (Maybe Half-life Mod 'The Specialists' too infact).

@Mit:
Good points. Unfortunately, I guess I didn't play those servers. :(
I still want to give the series a chance, and I probably will pick up BF3 to try playing it on a more level playing field. I hope DICE has at least thought about borrowing Quake Wars' "series of objectives" gameplay. I think the BF series could really benefit from that and it could really expand the tactical depth of the game.

@stupid_mcgee: There are plenty of veteran players that still use starter weapons. There are some classes that benefit from them obviously (spec ops, the rocket guys), but a lot of the starter weapons for medics, assault, support, snipers, and engineer, are often used by advanced players. If anything they're actually just harder to learn to use in order to bring out their potential (which is in some cases better than unlock episodes).
You also have to play in a good server. A lot of vehicle servers have ace pilots in them and a bunch of uncoordinated, noob teams, who just get raped (the pilots don't even go after each other usually). I only play infantry only nowadays, and it's great. I play in a 64 man server (IMA) where the teams always squad up, and plenty of people talk.
I also like the more open approach. If you know the game, you know where action is, and if you're playing in the more infantry oriented levels, knowing where action isn't is actually more important.
I'll agree it sucks in most vehicle servers, especially now in the game's life, but it doesn't sound like you experienced everything the game had to offer.
I can't wait for the next battlefield game, especially if they put more physical elements in it (sliding around a corner shooting? Hell yeah).
I thought Battlefield 3 was a bit closer though. This news sounds like they haven't worked on it at all :\

@stupid_mcgee: Quakewars did a good job with leading you by the nose to the action, buts thats about all it did. It's also about 2 years newer than BF2 and year newer than 2142, so yeah I would expect some improvement on that. As for unbalanced weapons, the unlockable hvy MG in BF2 was a joke, both standard weapons give you a much tighter spread pattern. In 2142 90% of people use the Voss, which you can unlock in your first couple of session's if your any good at all.
Why does a newbie deserve the same level of equipment as someone who's a vet? What the point of being a veteran player if there are no rewards. I think your forgetting that everyone's a newb at some point and if your not going to play a game because people who've played longer have an "unfair" advantage, your going to have trouble finding games like this to play as the genre evolves...
The BF series has a ton of warts, not the least of which is the horrid support from EA, but if you want large scale action like this, I'm convinced its the only game in town.

If they have s truly destructible environment than being able to wall run would be made a moot point when your adversary blows the wall your running on away. That sounds pretty awesome too though.

@DreamoftheEndless: Didn't run into as much diving as I did bunny hopping. Until I started being more selective with my servers it got to the point where the ability to skeet shoot became a required skill.
Mobility is great and all, but this would probably end up being something that detracts greatly from the ground combat/tactical bearing of these games. Like people not actually fighting because they're waiting to fight over the newly spawned helicopter. I forsee a bunch of people just swinging around and slipping from window to window, necessitating some sort of rifle line defense at the flag...which may not be possible if your whole team is being newb-munkies as well.

It'd be awesome to see your character actually jump onto a tank and get in a-la Farcry 2 where your character gets IN the vehicle. Battles would be more realistic, and people would get killed a lot 'cause of it, awesome.

I believe they don't actually mean there will be jumping around on rooftops and the like, perhaps movements more associated with what real soldiers might do, for example, climbing over a ledge, crouching under an obstacle, being able to look down at your body (and check for wounds) etc. This would definitely help make the game more immersive, as your character would have a physical body rather than just being floating arms holding a gun in a virtual world.

There's already an indy team who has made the acrobatic shooter evr 8 years now.
Of course mirror's edge looks sexy but i wonder if Dice isn't just taking advantage of its production power after playing Urban Terror (free game from a really small indy team without the power to make it big).

Considering how bugged BF2142 still was after 8 months and 20+ patches, I sure hope that this decision is a good one and doesn't complicate things more for em. I played that game until something better came out and couldn't bare myself to go back to play it, which is saying a lot because I have always reinstalled old games at least 3 times before I usually stop playing them.
