Spore Spawns A Million Sales, 25 Million Creations
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 10:00 AM on September 25, 2008
After just two weeks and change on the market, EA and Maxis' Spore has sold through over a million copies. The company announced today that Will Wright and team's sim-everything game is, officially, "a hit." That million-plus figure counts sales of the Windows, Mac and Nintendo DS versions of Spore, but not the mobile and iPhone versions.
While EA was trotting out numbers, it wanted to mention that some 25 million things have been uploaded to the Sporepedia, a figure we'll presume includes all the goodies uploaded via the Spore Creature Creator. So, now you know!

I'm enjoying the game. Addictive as hell.

Don't forget, some people had to buy the game more than once because of DRM.
Is this mic on?
Thank you, I'll be here all night.

wow all those people suing EA really got their point across!
all the anti-EA rabble we see online appears to be total bullshit when they release sales figures like this.
Give it a rest.
Upcoming Titles that EA haters will eat crow on:
Fable 2
Deadspace
Mirrors Edge
Warhammer Online

How many of those creations are penises? Or boobs? Or penises with boobs?

So I guess it'll look happy on the surface even though there's a ton turmoil underneath. Is the game worth all the bad press it's getting?

all i know is, i just got a buddy of mine to bring me a pirated version. why? because i dont have any bullshit rootkits installed this way, and I could care less about anything the online features might have to offer. good to see its still selling well regardless, but yeah, release a version that is free of the BS, and I'm totally 100% willing to pay for it.

:( I just wish my game would work - sure I don't like the DRM but that is much lower on my gripe list than actually being able to play it. First day I played it, it worked fine and I was hooked. Next day - about half the other creatures are invisible. Its hard to be a herbivore with invisible creatures eating me.
A lot of people are having that problem post patch. And its not like I have some weird setup - its a dell gaming laptop with XP (video card is 7800M GTX).

Why mention "mobile and iPhone", did Apple drop a check on this site too? Cause the last time I checked iPhone is a mobile also. Fanboys are everywhere.

i dont even care about pc games, but im still glad to see the medium thriving. a game thats not wow or the sims selling a million is pretty cool... especially this fast. (i know other versions are included.. but i couldnt possibly imagine the ds figures contributing much.. and mac/pc.. both computers, whatever lol.. thats like the diff in ps3/360.. theyre both consoles).
cheers to the pc gaming community from an avid arcade fan!

And just how many of those are for DS? Half? Two thirds?
@Lombax: How do you know I'll be eating crow on any of those? Two of them aren't on my list and the other two were erased from my list shortly after word got out about this.
EA isn't the only PC publishing studio, you know; there are other, far better, out there.

@poisonedsodapop: Bad press?! Lol, from who exactly? Internet cry babies who can't handle DRM? Funny.
Out of those million sales, there MIGHT be a hundred thousand who actually care about all the shit everyone cries on here about every day. So give it a rest.

I've bought it and I've been enjoying it without any issues, DRM-related or otherwise.
If DRM problems do crop up, I'll contact EA and ask them to fix the issue. If they don't respond adequately, then I'll call my local Fair Trading office and get them to sort it all out.
Until then, I'm happy with the game.

@Boozerz: As am i, amazing game. its funny, for all that i keep hearing about drm bricking peoples systems, and other fun problems, i have had a fully problem free experience, outside of the fucking homeworld crash bug, that needs fixed.

The only issues I've had so far are with the so-called 'patch', which has made the game unplayable for me. But still, good to see Wright's latest achievement pay off.

I've only had one problem with the game, and that's with my minimap not displaying correctly (which seems to be graphics card related anyway), I'm freakin addicted like hell to the creator tools. Money well spent, IMO :D

Hmm, I'll admit I'm curious if this game is any fun, but from what I've repeatedly heard about it being a fluffed-up set of mini-games, I'm skeptical.

@Trym:
The fluffed-up minigames rumor is inflated. While Spore is greater than the sum of its parts, the creation tools gel everything together into a wonderful experience.
Also, my girlfriend has invested at least 10 hours in the game (playing at my apartment) and is going to buy the game herself. I think the game has pretty broad appeal (heh).

@mva5580: true, but those amazon 1-star ratings cant be helping. hopefully, theyve got enough whiny, DRM-dickriding internet stars backing up their sales, somehow.

I personally am loving the game as well. I have had no technical issues with it whatsoever so far. Oh but I have not installed the patch yet, as I don't see a problem with the old version.
The only stage which I do not enjoy is the civ stage, I Just rush that through in like 25-30 mins. It is really really simplified, and not fun at all. If they had made that with a little more depth (perhaps 3 different resources to manage?) it would've been something amazing

They should have stopped at char creator which is the only good thing about this game. The gameplay and the entire evolution thing is a standard A4-paper format model without any variations, just like the rest of the mediocre strategy games out there. I am not even talking about the lack of controls, the completely unfinished space age and the awful camera.

And then there's me, who has given up on the game entirely because despite everything being updated, etc. and settings turned to minimum the game still crashes within a half hour of play.
I promised myself I wouldn't buy day-one PC games (or even year one really) but I was soooo excited for Spore I did it anyway. This may very well be the last time I make that mistake.

The game is alright, though over hyped. The creature/vehicle/building creator is really awesome, but the game play is very mediocre. Still good to see something different out there though.

Wait, a few hundred trolls couldn't derail this game? What is this world coming to?!
I'm a casual gamer, and I'm on my second play through. Obviously, any game has issues but I'm finding the mixture of creativity and simple strategy, as well as striving for achievements, quite addicting and satisfying! I'm proud to be 1 of the 1,000,000.

'Pretty broad' appeal with your girlfriend... I hope that wasn't an intentional pun... I tried it on a friend's computer, it seemed okay, not something I would go for at the current price and status with DRM. Maybe if it ever drops in price.
