The Last Remnant Screenshot Explosion
Posted by Mike Fahey at 3:40 AM on September 25, 2008
Square Enix can be a little sporadic when it comes to handing out screens of their upcoming titles, but when they do get around to it they do it up big. How big? They've just dropped over 70 screenshots for The Last Remnant, covering all the bases. It's so large we had to split it into two galleries, one dealing with the characters and encounters in the game, and another that covers bosses and storyline moments. I'm really digging the style of Remnant, though after the pile that was Infinite Undiscovery (which should have had Saga at the end) anything else comes out looking like a work of art. Without further ado, here's enough pretty pictures to keep us occupied until the game's November release.

The painful memories of XII are coming back with this one. The hours spent mindlessly trudging along, pressing only the thumbstick forward and the occasional setting of skills/equipment. All of this while trying to keep up with what little plot there was and forcing myself to at least try to care about one of the characters. (I chose to try to like Balthier, didn't work.) In the end, what I got was a 30+ hour Star Wars (there are too many plot similarities to count) in a fantasy setting. If this game is as much like FF XII as it looks, count me out.

I HOPE that they've stepped up the voice acting, and the script writing. The seemingly 16 year old chick that gets kidnapped at the beginning sounds like she's 10, *whimper* "No...leave my brother alone!" Seriously, what teen talks like that? Couldn't they hire someone outside of the developement house to actually write a better script for the English version? It just sounds incredibly cheesey the way it's delivered. On the other side it sounds like the voice of Ichigo from Bleach is voicing the main character, which is good. But since he's using the EXACT same voice it feels like the character should have orange spikey hair and be carrying an oversized sword wrapped in ace bandages on his back.

@Foxstar Sixtail: Kind of yeah. Forgive me if I don't give a flying fuck wether or not a console I have no intention of buying thrives or fails.
It's not in my interest as a PlayStation 3 owner to have Microsoft buying exclusives. It is in Sony's case.
Why is that so hard to understand?
I have no intention of owning a 360...I think it's a shit system...and therefore I have no desire to see it do well/secure exclusives.
I do own a PlayStation 3...I think it's a good system...and therefore it is in my best interest to see it do well/secure exclusives.
Hardly rocket science.

@Foxstar Sixtail: I definitely won't refute that Unlimited fell to the wayside, but all honesty and fairness, the only people who scored Romancing poorly are the people who either couldn't comprehend the unforgiving free-form design of the game, or the people who just don't like such open-ended'ness--just like all the other SaGa games (psx forwards, havn't played before then).

I dont care for games i knew my prefered console wouldnt get because i dont have the other console (cant be bothered with RRoD), but to tell us its going to released at a certain date and then delaying it indefinitely sucks piles of dung.

@LittleBigPlaneteer: Thanks for that, sounds like mixed news there. No random encounters = good, high number of quests = good,(I was horrified when I played IU for 8hrs and the game told me to swap disks) quick time events = bad, turn-burst = *scratches head*, battling 70 enemies at a time = smells like a button masher :(

It looks like Final Fantasy XII, both in art style and potential gameplay, and that makes me all sorts of excited.
It looks like Ivalice almost, but since they never tagged this one as part of the Ivalice Alliance, I'm sure they'll set it somewhere interesting, like Bivalice.
And I'll be damned if I didn't just see some pseudo-Ifrit in there.
Just from the looks of it so far, the characters look awesomely detailed and extremely emotive, and the battles look awesome. I already have extremely high hopes for this one.

@Deus_EpS: I'm sure it's a combination of factors...UE3 difficulties included. I'd imagine this was a case where Microsoft saw Square struggling and chose to act on the situation.
But seriously, what incentive is there for Square (assuming their UE3 woes are real) to go back to work on a troublesome PlayStation 3 version hen the 360 version is already out the door...particularly when the game in question has been designed with more Western appeal in mind?
My answer is not much. And I'm sure Microsoft offered up a fuck ton of money to eliminate any doubt.

And whats more, we have to wait for the 360 version of FFXIII to be completed before we can play it on the PS3 which probably will be ready months before the 360's is. @2SBs:
According to Wikipedia:
"The Last Remnant will feature a brand new battle system labelled by Hiroshi Takai (director) as a "Turn-burst, command-based system using symbol encounters." There will be no random encounters.[3] It will also contain quick time events, sequences where the player must press a combination of buttons with a correct timing to defeat enemies. This system has appeared in other video games before The Last Remnant, for instance in Shenmue, Dark Cloud, Kingdom Hearts II and God of War.
In addition to the main character, the player's team (called a "Union") is composed of a number of soldiers whose skills vary according to different parameters. One parameter is the "morale" bar, which is affected by the events in battle and affects the way characters perform in battle. Battles can involve up to 70 enemies at once and will be at the core of the gameplay. Nobuyuki Ueda has commented on the battle system, claiming that it is "much deeper than the few seconds it received in the movie".[3] Additionally, a high number of quests are expected"

Looking great. Giving me a bit of an FF12 vibe in some of the screens, which I think is a wonderful thing; I think more RPGs could learn a thing or two from that game.
Also, was that a stab at the SaGa series (Frontier, Romacing, Unlimited?) If so, that deeply wounds me; they are probably my second favorite Square franchise. Romancing Saga: Minstrel Song especially, as I truly think it was one of the most underrated RPGs I've ever played.

The new trick is:
1. "Timed Exclusive" titles
2. "Content Exclusive" titles
I will say its a shame when games are made for the Xbox then later ported to the PS, all it does is gimp the system. I rather them make it for the PS and then gimp the game for the Xbox.

@GrassJelly: Seems to fit in with the idea that Japanese developers are trying to score with Western audiences. If you want to start getting big numbers in the West, PS3 exclusives are not the way to go.
That doesn't answer the question of why so many developers are producing exclusives in the first place, but it helps explain why so many JRPGs are 360 exclusives rather than PS3 exclusives. If you're going to make an exclusive, it makes sense to do it for the console that best fits your target audience. And strange though it may seem, Japanese gamers are increasingly not the most important audience even for JRPGs.

I am REALLY looking forward to this. After being disappointed with Infinite Undiscovery (which I assume was really rushed out the door because damn Tri-Ace has NEVER made a game that poorly before), Last Remnant is really the biggest game I've got on the horizon. I've even got one of the themes on my 360 right now, along with one of the gamer pictures.
I wouldn't call IU a pile though. I would call it a massive amount of UNDISCOVERED potential. For every cool idea it had, it was bogged down by 10 other problems. If it had another 10 hours of just character development/quests and sidequests that actually mattered, along with some serious graphical overhauling, I think it would've been entirely fine.

This game looks great , a little on the baron , nothing in the background side or anything really going on in the background side. Compared to most Squeenix games it's also really dull looking color wise . I can let that slide though.
Now , heres hoping it actually really good , because Infinite looks amazing , I mean good , minus the poorly timed mouth animation and horrible horrible voice sync. It has the gameplay of herding a 1000 mules , I'm going to beat it , but it's difficult and random and story is oddly pieced together.
I'd probaly wait for a PS3 port unless I saw a really good trailer showing what Squeenix is actually capable of doing on the 360. I have yet to see a RPG look and play better then Lost Oddyssey for the 360. ( Even though tales is alright , I'm not a fan of it's almost limited button mashing battle system ).

@Madeira: It's not that bad , if you can get over the horrible voice acting and the somewhat all over the place story. It's battle system is actually quite nice once you get used to it. It's a heck of a lot better then Vesparias battle system and copius buttom mashing that takes place.
It reminds me of old star oceans , alot like Star Ocean 2. Honestly the only thing that kills it is the story. I really like the way it looks once I get past the voice acting and timing. Reminds me alot of Grandia for the DC when it comes right down to it.
It's not as bad as people make it , I'm more then half way though it and I don't regret the purchase , but I can see that Tri-Ace will sweep this one under the carpet. It's right up there with Alundra , quality goodness all around.
I'd say pick it up , but then again I'll play anything.

@Foxstar Sixtail: Neither are the ramblings of bitter cranks who feel its out of place to ever complain about anything, ever. If the solution to every game related problem was to simply throw another $200 - $400 at the issue then forums like these wouldn't even exist.
And if you don't agree with my views then don't read them...I'm not going to censor myself just to satisfy your world view.

Went through more of the screens. Seriously, this is what happens when you use the Unreal 3.0 engine. It's frikkin' brown all over again... Yes, there's a bit of colour, but not a lot. Does the U3E have some uber desaturation tool that's enabled permanently?

@Madeira: From the moment I saw the first screens and video I knew it was going to be a generic, poorly made cash in, I just knew it. It's a shame because I really wanted to believe otherwise, but after reading reviews and hearing a good amount of people's opinions on it my predictions were confirmed.
Here's hoping The Last Remnant, White Knight Story and the Final Fantasy games deliver.

@Alex_Mexico: And most other people can't like it that much. I saw a slew of FF XIIs at Target brand new for $10 the other week. I still have no idea why the reviews for it were so positive when it came out (well, other than the fact that it's a mainline Final Fantasy). I just haven't had much faith in Square since this and the Final Fantasy VII Compilation were such huge disappointments. The ONLY reason I have some faith in XIII is because Kitase left halfway through.

@Foxstar Sixtail: Bias and slanted views? Are we suddenly not allowed to dislike anything anymore? Divorce yourself from the notion that the only true gamer is one who finds no serious fault with anything. That sounds more like a retard than a gamer.
And in case you haven't bothered to notice, subjectivity is kind of an unavoidable part of critiquing any game, console, or developer. Consider that games and the systems they're played on are subject to the same types of personal reactions reserved for literature, art, film, and music...then get back to me about the whole "bias" thing.

@Lord Thayer: Weren't the three Final Fantasy Legend games for the original gameboy originally released as SaGa titles in Japan? Those were pretty linear.
I couldn't get into the PSX ones... I don't think I had the time to invest in them and my pirated copies didn't have instructions, so i sorta gave up.

It's more impressive to note that all of Tales of Vesperia is on one disc with an immense amount of voice acting and a story that's well over 50 hours long.

The way most JRPGs have been going lately, I would be a little surprised if Square Enix doesn't snatch mediocrity from the jaws of victory. Please, oh please don't ruin this game somehow with:
- 14-second loading times for each battle (looking at YOU Lost Odyssey)
- slow-moving random battles that are a chore to get through
- main character who's a gigantic douchebag
- the obligatory little kids who join your party at some point
I'm not getting my hopes up too high, but maybe this could be the second great JRPG this generation, after Tales of Vesperia :)

I cant wait for this game. I just wish SQEX would start releasing ps3 games already, this is just ridiculous. Nobody's buying them on 360. I would if i had one, but i dont, and i wont. >.< How come this is getting a 360 release first?

Posted 10:29 AM 25/9/08
@GrassJelly: The number one reason is that the 360 came out first. So developers, in this case Square-Enix, started working on games for it. (system owner base not that established at this point anyways). Developers are also having a difficult time making PS3 games (just like they had a difficult time with developing for the PS2, remember any good RPGs come out soon after release?) and more specifically RPGs. They know the Japanese likes RPGs, so the only reasons RPGs haven't come out for it (there might have already been some, but Japan only, okay besides Oblivion) are they don't feel it is cost effective yet OR they are working on games for it but it's taking a long time to develop. Counterpoint to my argument: Disgaea 3 is a PS3 exclusive.

@smartpatrol: Lost Odyssey's load times weren't that bad. Either your 360 is dying, or you're lying as I've actually timed my load times to be 9 seconds for battles, which is really not very bad at all. And that will also be alleviated with the release of the fall update, allowing you to just play it off the hard drive anyway.
The battles were slow-moving but hardly a chore. Maybe if you barely played the game but even within a few hours, those random battles (which hardly ever even popped up considering the game's unbelievably low encounter rate) were quickly ramped up to be fairly good strategic exercises.
Kaim isn't a douche at all. In fact, if you have actually played the game, you'd know that's far far FAR from what he is. He doesn't show it to people he barely knows or doesn't trust, but he's one of the most loving characters in an RPG I can think of.
The kids join your party for a good reason and they're both probably the best-written and most uncliched pair of kids in gaming history.
Like some other guy said, we can only hope Last Remnant is close to Lost Odyssey in quality.

Wow!!! Im lost for words...I cant believe the complete 180 this game is making! It was looking like utter crap and now it looks amazing...Go figure...And here I was betting on Infinite...Oh well... 360 is the best seller in japan at the moment as it should've been and more Japanese developer are throwing away their Bias and giving it a shot to find out it's easier to develop on than the George Foreman 3! I might have to pick this game up if the screens are a new indication of what the game will be like. Where's a sperm bank when you need one... (Sing) I get money...I, I get money!...

I can't wait for Last Remnant. Infinite Undiscovery was so very broken in so many ways, this will be a nice recovery. There is no excuse to having slowdown like it had. Or having to pull out or sheath your sword to do everything. How about some sitting while we navigate menus during a fight? Cmon folks, pile doesn't even begin to describe that atrocity. Hope Remnant can give me a real RPG diversion until Fallout
