Blackshot FPS Enters Closed Beta - Screens Ahoy!
Posted by Stuart Houghton at 6:20 AM on September 26, 2008
Outspark has launched a closed PC Beta of its free-to-play online FPS Blackshot. The beta is open from September 30th until October 5th and features 4 selectable characters, 7 maps and 17 different weapons.
Outspark have sent us a load of screenshots showing off the mercenary-based online antics. It does, it has to be said, look fairly generic - but it is free and as ever with shooters the proof of the pudding is in the gameplay.
You can sign up for the closed beta via the game's website. If you don't get in, remain calm - it will be followed by an open beta later in the year.

At least it's not yet another MMO. Can't wait for Open Beta to come around.

I'm interested. But if the gameplay sucks, not even being free is going to save this game.

I'll stick to counter-strike source.
Donsn't even look as good as a game that came out 4 years ago.

"You can sign up for the closed beta via the game's website."
Unfrotunately this isn't the case anymore. After looking around the forums, it seems this article is about 24 hours too late as the sign-ups were closed yeserday.

Unconciously I keep comparing this to Counter Strike, but atleast it's free so that's a plus.

executive summary based on blown up shot in the lead;
"Take control of a deranged survivalist higher than a kite on all kinds of forest fungus and recycled hippy alchemical waste products. Enjoy popping off a few rounds at the invisible sasquatch that's haunted you for years ever since you took that first hit of meth in junior high, flashed the cafeteria during 'B' lunch, and was laughed into a humiliating series of counselling sessions which utterly failed to reach the root of your anger. The latest in DX 10 shader technology will allow you to experience the truckstop sheen of a pair of fingerless gloves sold at AM PMs throughout the midwest right next to a rack of handkerchiefs perfect for disguising your face while robbing selfsame AM PM or wrangling that white kid fro into a broback. You're going to love the 'reality check' cam, which allows you to see this human wreckage's embarrassing behavior through the cynical eyes of family and friends who gave up all hope of a GED, let alone college, years ago.
Are you Xtreme enough?"

Eeeh I still don't know about this. Cash shop games like this usually die due to exploits and just users becoming uninterested. However I could you know, just be wrong about it. I'm still gonna try it though :3

It looks generic, but ya can't argue with a free-to-play game. I'll keep my eye on this one.

So what's the difference between this, and, say, Combat Arms? [kotaku.com]
There's also the free FEAR Combat, or Cube 2, or Celestial Impact or Paintball 2.0, Half-Life 2 Deathmatch... So many free FPSs.

the modeling and texturing of the M4 looks pretty decent, but all that blood covering it is kinda whack looking, looks more like a horror game then a military shooter.

@Krondonian: Different developer? Can't the same be said of most/all retail FPS as well? I mean it's a genre that's kinda well known for how generic it is/how much everything runs together, right? I mean beside the space lasers vs wwii weapons thing, what's the difference between MOST shooters?
Or perhaps rather, why does it matter? New games are always welcome even if they are similar to old games, as at least there are new maps, maybe different weapons, etc...

Ok, maybe this is not about realism, but...the M16, the M4 and the G36 are mirrored! They eject the shells to the left!

@AoE: lol, let me redo my sentence.. I don't see how someone would prefer to play this instead of TF2 or CoD4, even not being free, FPSs don't have a monthly fee like MMOs.. so, being free is not really a big advantage here..

wait a minute..
Basic team-based "tactical shooter"..
..simple (proportional non-regenerating) health and armor counters?
..incorrect muzzle flash?
..a mini-map?
This *IS* Counter-Strike!
Ok, ok.. maybe lots of games are like that..
..but the blocky mirror-image weapon models??? Yep; this CS:bargin-bin edition.
I bet that M16 even "charges" by *pulling* on the forward-assist. And, I notice the dust cover is closed despite the tossed spent casings. Where do game artists get this stuff?
(I did just notice the MP5 looks mostly correct)
Ok, enough complaining.. It looks like it might be fun. Can't beat the price.

Looks like another generic F2P shooter. Please prove me wrong.
Is this another free Counter-Strike? Another Soldier Front, WarRock, Combat Arms etc.
Does it also have more generic assault rifles, shotguns, sniperfagrifles, pistols and grenades?

this game looks like it uses source engine. which would explain why the guns are mirrored. ever since half-life was released every gun ever put into a half-life or source engine game/mod has had mirrored guns unless the developers modeled the guns as if it were for a left handed person (bullet casing are expelled from the left). so when the gun is mirrored the gun looks correct for a right handed person when in left hand view and is incorrect on right hand view. it's one of the small annoying details about anything built on the half-life or source engine.

Visuals are sub-par to games released 4 years ago and the guns have horrible models with all kinds of wrongness on them. Usually the weapon doesn't eject the brass in the operators face and the forward assist on all m16 variants is ALWAYS on the right side of the weapon (CSS does this too, but at least all the other weapons are right). So basically every gun in that game is designed for a left handed shooter, even though the player holds it on the right side.

Gameplay is ofc what makes a good FPS online game, but this looks, like told, so awfully generic. But since it's free, I'll probably check it out one day.

I never really understood the generic, attractive, female character - she had a rough background but came through it all without a scar and skills with a gun that are exactly the same as any other war-scar embellished, gun toting maniac. I just never saw the... appeal, or realism but I don't think that was the focus of the producers; the horny young teenager category is too enticing, I guess.
