Burnout Trophies Are Go, But Not Backwards
Posted by Mike Fahey at 12:40 AM on September 26, 2008
Burnout Paradise for the PlayStation 3 has updated again, this time delivering trophy support to achievement-hungry PS3 owners around the globe. Over sixty different trophies are available, spanning both the original game as well as the Cagney and Bikes updates, meaning that Burnout owners will have a ton of unlocking to get done, especially considering this sad news...
Burnout Paradise saves are locked to your profile. We had hoped to use this to retroactively award trophies, but we discovered during testing that this is not possible. You will therefore require a fresh game-save to receive trophies in Burnout Paradise. If you're familiar with PS3 trophies already, you'll recognise that this works in the same way as all other games that have added trophy support post-release.
Just goes to show, you really shouldn't announce good news until good news actually exists.

@INTVGene: How is it possible that you are that ungrateful? You've been given two, or is it three now FREE updates including game modes, vehicles and features, yet you are bitching because Criterion tried to give you even more and couldn't due to technical limitations.
Why don't you crawl back into your hole until you learn some manners you spoilt little brat?

@ceilingFANBOY: Thats because, since the achievements have only been recently implemented, people could simply download and use any save file online, and get all the achievements instantly.
Which, defeats the purpose and can make it an "unfair" system.
The reason why they could do it with warhawk, is because the retroactive achievements available in that were server side, ones you couldn't download a save file for because it was linked to your PSN account.

Man Fahey, pretty snarky.
Why the hate? Criterion has been upfront about update issues with their fans all along and is the most "open" studio out there - they have the best video podcasts showing what the studio looks like, who actually builds the games and keep one-on-one communication with the players.
The downloads are free, the content is great, they invest tons of time and effort to make the game the best it can be and support their growing fanbase.
How do they warrant being "reprimanded"?

Funny you should mention that...
Just this morning I ordered a 250GB HDD for my PS3 precisely because I agree with what you have just said.
In fact, I'm holding off on downloading WipEout until I get the new HDD... Bottom line is that I don't want to deal with Sony's re-download policies in the future, so I may as well get a large HDD now.

The two games are quite different so getting both would be ideal. Of course if you're asking I'm guessing it's because you can't do that...
I am a huge WipEout fan, so I would most likely go in that direction. But keep this in mind... WipEout usually gets ridiculously difficult as you get past the middle of the grids.
So if you're ok with the crazy difficulty, I'd say go with WipEout. Otherwise stick to Burnout which will give you plenty of fun online and off and is a game that the studio seems to be determined to keep fresh with expansions.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I gotta agree with Setzer here, saying "Criterion Sucks" Is waaay too broad a stroke here. And though for sure you are entitled to your opinion, Criterion have given back to games more with this game than any other company I have seen to date this generation. Again I understand you frustration, and yes perhaps they did know earlier, but given their track record I am inclined to believe they did their best to make it work, and it didn't.
The trophy system from what I understand is built off of a save file, and some files are client side (unprotected) and you could just DL a save file from anyone one a bam trophy heaven! I think what happened is they were bit overly ambitions with what the trophy system could do, but their save config was not written to accommodate it as title such as Warhawk have some retro trophies.

for the ps3, if the internet cuts off during the download of something, you get an error message and you have to start it all over again.
i happened to be downloading Qore at the time, and i sent emails to sony and my responses were the following: (no seriously im not kidding)
Me: i am sending you this email because i would like to redownload Qore because my internet connection was interrupted.
Them: Qore is an online magazine exclusive to the playstation 3 system that gives you inside information, news (etc)
Me: Your misunderstanding. I KNOW what Qore is, i bought it. i just want to redownload it...
Them: I am glad to assist you with that can you send us your information?
Me: (information)
Them: I will be glad to assist you with that, can you send us your information?
Me: it was in the last email i sent...
Them: im sorry but we cannot help you at this time.
I called sony, was on hold for a while but it only took 5 minutes to get them to let me redownload it. I even had a chat with the guy i was talking to and he was a great guy.
Lesson learned: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT SEND THEM EMAILS! CALL THEM!!!
With games though, the download manager will assist you, its movies that are the huge problem.

The camera thing is not too bad b/c the eyetoy also works for all kinds of burnout stuff, like pics of people when you beat them (which is pretty cool actually) and your license pic. I still don't think that trophies will really take off, at least not on the scale of the 360's achievements. If not every game supports it, from the games launch, it won't work. Especially with games that have been out, and are getting patches that put in the trophies. Even more so with no retro-active unlocking. How badly will the people who beat MGS4 on hardest difficulty with no alerts, want to do it all over again? I can see it pulling people back to games to play them again, but for the more extreme ones, I can't imagine it. For Battlefield Bad Company, I beat it on hard for the achievements, but if I had done it beforehand, and then a month later trophies got put it, and then I'd have to do it AGAIN? I'd just bury it for a couple years till I forget how annoying it was. Not hard, but just plain annoying the AI, and all enemies are.

@Talleh: I totally disagree. There are games that are being played on PS3 right now just for the Trophies. People are cracked out over trophies the same way people are cracked out over achievements. First and some second gen games on PS3 don't have trophies but ever game henceforth with. I understand your logic but I can't agree with it. Especially after seeing the fierce competition I'm having with a good number of friends on my PSN list over trophy numbers and platinums
The trophy whoring infection has already started on PS3 and it's not going to stop. Of course, it would have been nice to have trophies in MGS4 and Heavenly Sword but it's all good. Because now we get trophies in Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet, Killzone2, MotorStorm2, BioShock....

Well, whether store bought or online, I think I might get this and enjoy some more trophies.

@Methusalah: like salt to a wound.
What I don't understand is why dont they let you redo it without starting a new file eg. Redo all races to get an all races won trophy. instead of having to redo everything even things that dont reward you with one.

It won't prompt me to patch the game when I start it up on PS3. Anyone got any suggestions?

@cornunderscore2x: You need to start the game, and get it patched, first.
Seems like some people aren't getting propmted for a patch. make sure you are logged in to your playstation account before starting the game, perhaps.

I restarted last night... At first i was *pissed* but, after a bit, it's actually kind of cool, i'm enjoying burnout again. *happy*
And apparently if you back up your save before you delete it you can put it back after you've gotten your trophies.
Considering most of the trophies only require you to have to get half of the stuff in the game. like 200/400 gates, you can practically fall over that many with your eyes closed. The hardest part is earning back up to a burnout license, and playing the online stuff.

I absolutely hate how sony makes you play the same game over again just to unlock trophies (i.e. grow the ol' e-peen). Seriously, even if people DO go "download" save files from websites, wtf does it matter? It's not like there's a prize at the end. /palmface

I don't see how they couldn't be retroactive since some of Warhawk's were.

Ok, I don't like seeing people go all kiss-ass for Criterion on this. The thing that piss people off is this fact: Criterion has told us as soon as the trophies came out they would be retroactive. Never once, well until now, did they come out and say, "Well we found a problem during testing and the trophies aren't retroactive." That would have been fine, but to not say anything until the DAY you release them is just unacceptable. I love this game, I truly do, however, there is no way I am going to start a new game for trophies. That is ridiculous over 150+ hours of PT, all the cars and bike unlocked, it just will not happen.
I just thought that people should understand why most of us are pissed at Criterion and not taking this lightly.

This is a little off topic, but I was thinking about getting Paradise. Does it have 2 player local play, as in offline split screen? Thanks

Wow! Didn't they say they would be retroactive?!?!? I'm so glad I haven't really played it too much. I've only had it for about a month, so that's not to bad to restart...but still. Talk about disappointment.

@Logic1: No, that wasn´t the case, it´s just that i bought other games on the 360 instead of it and now that i´m thinking about picking it up, i want to play it on PS3 instead and the trophies support just convinced me more. That´s the good thing about having all the consoles, you know?
