Fallout Now Free Via GameTap
Posted by Stuart Houghton at 7:20 AM on September 26, 2008
If you are looking forward to Fallout 3 but are either too young to remember the original or just fancy reliving a genuine no-messing-about classic, GameTap is offering up Fallout for free.
You will have to sign up with GameTap to get at the goods, and you can expect they will probably ask if you want to start paying for their premium service at some point.
There is a slight bug in GameTap's implementation of the game that means the screen will occasionally go blank (fixable with a few key presses) but whaddaya want? Its free, and its one of the games you need to at least pretend that you have played to avoid embarrassment at dinner parties.

@Dejanus: Unless the holder of the game's right grants permission to put the game into the public domian, as Bethesda did with "Arena", then it's illegal to obtain the game without purchasing it.
It's really that simple - there's no "more or less" to it. A game's either declared public domain, or it hasn't.

I am not one to advocate piracy by any means, but this game is more or less public domain and can be downloaded in full from hundreds of sites, which is much more expedient than the shit Gametap puts you through.

@StartingAces: I like it too, but in terms of money, you can get more out of gametap, depending on what you're into..
For instance, I'm tempted by trainwrecks like kane and lynch and clive barker's jericho--and those are on gametap. I also like sam and max and wanted to try out Grimm's tales. Again--GT. I also like dredging up random RTSes, puzzle games, and strategy games to use as timewasters when I'm bored. Each of which individually I don't care about much, but, collectively, make up a significant portion of my gaming pie.
GT is great for people like me who like playing games, want to try different things--fool around with them a bit, but aren't necessarily looking for the next big game that'll give me 100+ hours. I save alot of money with GT that way.
Fallout is fine, as far as it goes, but honestly, I'm not sure I want to shell out the cash to 'own' it. I'm just as happy that it shows up in my gametap sub and I can mess with it a bit, and if I get bored or put off by it (like I was, years ago, when it was new), I haven't shelled out nonrefundable cash to own it. Instead, I just go to another game in the subscription. Like psychonauts (another game I wanted to take a second look at, but didn't play through).

i love the fallout games...even Tactics i warmed up to (until the woman was "cleaning" the hard drive and deleted FOT, not knowing what it was...just about half complete save game*sigh*)
the only game with the "fallout" name in it was that god-awful monstrosity they brought to the original sexbox....good god that was horrible
can't wait for F3 though....i'm nervously optimistic about it....please make it good bethesda, please?

If the game was still available anywhere I could find it, I would happily pay the five bucks that it would probably cost to have it.

My God I miss this game. I think they should make another overhead turn-based styled Fallout again. Heck, I'd easily pay to play Fallout with just a few graphic upgrades and menu updates. I'm all for Fallout 3, but just to have a little bit of the past in an updated fashion would make me the giddiest little girl on the block!

@Dejanus: Ironically, I did just that about a week ago. I don't play Gametap as I can't anyhow (Vista 64 haters, they are), and I didn't feel like waiting forever for GOG.com to open up...so I just got it from a torrent. I feel dirty, yes, but keep in mind I've never played a Fallout game in my life. The hype for Fallout 3 had me itching to play the first, and I am head over heels for this game. I'll probably buy it on GOG just to support it.
All I can say is that I <3 the Bloody Mess perk.

@deathbunny: I'd completely agree with this statement if I still used my XP pc to play games. Only about half of pc games (speaking about older ones) end up working in Vista no matter how many tricks I try. I'm definitely going to subscribe again (especially because I don't want to pay for Hitman/Kane & Lynch), but I've got too many things on the menu first.
I'm just bummed because Prince of Qin is busted in Vista.

Saw this game was on Good Old Games but got the UK company DVD at Fry's Electronics for $20 that had Fallout 1, 2, Tactics & lots of extras from those games (mostly concept art). Sure it cost a little but it's all 3 games for close to $6 each which is a much better deal to me than signing up for gametap for one of the three.

If you can get into the gog.com beta, you can buy it (and fallout 2 and Tactics) and own them forever for 5.99. I'd much rather do that than suffer through Gametap's extremely horrible player. I tried playing Second Sight through it, and for some insane reason it ran at like -5fps.
