Fuel Producer - We Take You Down, Paradise City
Posted by Stuart Houghton at 9:20 AM on September 26, 2008
Fuel, says Codemaster's exec producer David Brickley, is soooooo big that it makes Paradise City - off of Criterion's Burnout - look like a postage stamp by comparison.
The game - as Codemasters has been telling us for a while now - has a open play area equivalent to 5,000 square miles. It's not a great comparison - even by Brickley's calculations (he used Powerpoint, bless) Paradise City would need to be a postage stamp about 2.5 miles across - but I think we get his point.
So flippin' huge is the game that if made using 'traditional methods' (we think he is referring to data compression rather than hand tools and leather aprons) the game would fill a whopping 4 Blu-ray discs as opposed to the still fairly ginormous 1 Blu-ray disc it actually takes up.
Fuel's open world would fill '4 Blu-rays' [Videogamer]

That's just waaaaaay too much virtual real estate to transverse. Some devs need to learn that in some cases less is more.

Personally I'm sick of Codemasters releasing 50 racing games named with 4 letters over a year and a half.
Dirt, Grid, Pure, now Fuel. What's next? Crap? Oh wait, that's all of them already.
I guess "F***" will have to do.
I hope they get banned for naming their next game that and close down the studio working on any future racing game. Just get OFP2 out and stop wasting money on crappy car games. You're no match for Burnout, GT and Motorstorm anyway, and will never be if you put 3 months into development.

They can talk the talk all they want, but they'll never touch Burnout Paradise. This is Codemasters we're talking about here...
They won't release any free content packs, they won't patch the game, this'll be just like that Disney Offroad ATV game you can't remember the name of. It'll be in the bargain bin a month after release.

Games like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Star Wars: TFU have proven that while there is an increasing number of open-world games, linear titles still provide entertainment on an epic scale. Personally, I like being led through a powerful campaign more than being let loose on a huge enviornment, which gets old and repetitive fast (though I'm still eager for Fallout 3).

Sorry, I'll take small concentrated quality content over huge boring spread out content any day. GTA: San Andreas was a good lesson in that. Or the old Elder Scroll games (shudder).

The biggest selling point Burnout Paradise had to ME was the free content updates that are even now still being developed. Honestly if it's good, more power to them, but contrary to the oft-cited belief, size doesn't matter.

@celery: What was wrong with Hellgate's map system? I can agree that the gameplay needed work, but generating quasi-random maps worked fine. I wouldn't mind if it meant there was some new path every time I went out for a cruise.

@AoE: Just reread my comment, and it comes off a little harsh. I actually liked TDU more than Burnout, I was referring to sales, and I should have said that.
The driving mechanics were a bit off (turning on a central axis), but I was fine with it once I put it in the bumper cam.

Impressive. But do we really need that much open area in a game? It could be a chore to drive to each location.
Also, with all that land, how much of it will be unique?

Is the the one where you get a bonus point for making it from one side of the map to the other in one 8-hour drive and there are occasional flies that hit the windshield? You might think you can just tape the gas button down, but there's a slight pull to the right, so the bus COULD go off the road....
Nevermind. Wrong game.

Burnout Paradise is a good size honestly. The only thing that would make it better is if they bridged Paradise City to another city with more stuff to do. I'm sure someone would bitch about it being "too repetitive" because you have to drive all the time.. heh.
Kind of like Dragon Quest VIII was "too old school"..

And to think I already find it slightly annoying when I have to drive all the way to White Mountain Wind Farm in Paradise City... On the plus side, I can now do it with my eyes closed, chaining burnouts together like a pro. Any other race, I still suck, so all's right with the world. :)
Anyway, if Fuel's environment really is that huge, I imagine the devs will implement a fast travel option. Right? Right?!

I thought Burnout Paradise was about the right size. The city was big, interesting, and diverse without becoming repetitive and hard to drive in. A game much larger than Paradise would almost require hand holding for the driving in terms of knowing how to get from point A to point B. Paradise was the right size where once you got pretty familiar with the city, you could be given a start point, an end point, and usually feel pretty comfortable driving on your own.

My main memory of San Andreas was being bored out of my skull driving to get somewhere interesting, Driving, driving and more driving which wouldn't of been a lot more enjoyable if the idiot drivers didn't pull out for no reason and crash into your car.

CODEMASTERS.... TAKE A HINT FROM CRITERION
They offer superb customer support, excessive updates all for free and really push to get the most out their games.
You bring out a game, jump ship and provide ZERO support and move on to the next money making project...
I don't care about the size. Whizzing around streets, beaches, mountains etc appeals more than driving in a straight line for 10 minutes in... an orange dessert

I'm fairly certain that Dirt and Grid were fantastic racing games and both of them were made by Codemasters. They're going to be making a large, open-world(ish) racing game whereas Criterion made a crash simulator. Two completely different sub-genres.

I'm not the biggest racing game fan, but I adore burnout paradise, for it's gameplay not it's size.

Speaking as someone who has lots of expirence driving over 500 miles on a fairly regular basis, I don't think that 5000 miles of driving is the best idea. That is, unless they add jets and Helicopters, like they did in Just Cause. Jesus Christ though, what the hell are they going to do with all that area? Make an entire representation of the US?

I can't even imagine an environment that big. Wouldn't it take forever to drive around in a huge area like that, or will they have maybe warp points every so often?
BTW, Pure seems like it's pretty good. I had a lot of fun with the demo, and the game's been getting good reviews. I may have to buy it, or at least rent it. That is, AFTER I get Burnout: Paradise on the PSN! I need to get it before they bring in their helicopter update!

It's not procedural content ala Hellgate, its procedural content ala Just Cause.
As I understand it, rather than storing the textures on the disc, you give the game instructions on how to draw the textures from the ground up. The idea is it can build these up as you get in range of them.
This is how the demoscene does it, and how you get games like KKreiger and similar things down to 64k.
Large amounts of content doesnt need to mean excessive travel times or boring exploration.
Given that the games theme is large scale cross country driving, and battling the elements they couldn't really have a small focused environment.
And I believe you just jump to even starts, so theres no faffing on that front.
Also. Whoever said that "Disney Offroad ATV game" Is talking about Pure, and it's a crying shame that the game will be ignored, because its fantastic. Get the Demo. SSX on wheels.

That's pointless... how big would any game be if it stored everything in raw uncompressed high quality pre-optimized resources?
But what makes or breaks it for me against Burnout will be whether it has a "You should turn here" indicator, or like Paradise, a "You should have turned here" indicator.
