Impromptu Disbarment Parties Starting to Pop Up
Posted by Brian Crecente at 8:40 AM on September 26, 2008
While news of attorney Jack Thompson's disbarment today by the Supreme Court of Florida might have been unhappy news to some...one..., it certainly seems to have become a reason to celebrate for others.
For instance one game developer took it upon themselves to throw a little party to celebrate the day's news complete with cake, cookies and drinks. Yes cake. Right here on Kotaku. Surprised?
Know of any more of these going on? Send pics!

Why the leaves? Did they just get a quick cheap cake that was already made and happened to have a fall theme at the local Safeway?
Or is there a deeper meaning? Perhaps they are celebrating his "fall" from the ranks of lawyers and hoping that he will "leave" and not come back?
I wonder what the cake decorator at the store thought when they read the card saying what they wanted on the cake. "Douchebag? Seriously? Am I being punked? Am I going to get fired? I've gotta ask my manager if this is okay..." Even funnier if the cake decorator was a gamer and added the "you douchbag" himself.

It sure is a shame, the man had heart. He didn't give up, ever. If only he had directed that devotion to things that are more prevalent/important than video game related issues.
Either way, from the ashes of Jack Thompson rises a holiday, perhaps. A holiday that allows you to eat cake, which is always good. High five, Jack.

OutsideTheBox
Posted 9:53 AM 26/9/08
@OW-Holmes: Except his "career" was to take advantage of other people's misfortune to make money and push his own personal agenda. This is a guy who went to the families of school shooting victims and prolonged their suffering by encouraging them to pursue baseless lawsuits against game companies. That didn't exactly help those families heal and move on. He took advantage of people in a vulnerable emotional state and got them to channel their anger and sorrow in the wrong direction. How do you think it made them feel when their cases were dismissed by a judge as being frivolous and without merit? In their minds (after being coached by JT that the REAL criminals were the makers of Doom, Quake, The Sims, etc), it was probably as bad as if the actual killer was let go. To feel sorry for Jack Thompson is like feeling sorry for Michael Vick's dog trainer because "he lost his career".

So Jack Thompson exclaimed "let them eat cake", which the developers took to "heart" They took the time to "bake a pretty cake" even though the way was hazy. Then the people demanded to "cut the cake" they wanted a little lick of the creme. So that fateful day they got to "have their cake and eat it to."

@OW-Holmes: I view this as a triumph of the Bar Association protecting the general public from a hack lawyer like JT... I pitied anyone hiring Thompson, because they were getting screwed paying fees to the legal equivalent of a "quack" doctor. The man misfiled documents, filed papers with the court containing errors of fact both trivial (like wrong dates) to critical, and harassed opposing counsel and members of the bench; if Jacko was handling your case in the past few years, you were doomed.
It's sweet, sweet vengeance for us gamers but it's also a blow for consumer protection.

I think this should become an official gamer's holiday.
Cake and high-fives all round.

Well, that was certainly quick. I can only hope that they try to invite Jack to one of those just to see his reaction.

@Marlor: Well, until those days come back, here's GR's collection of 150 game cakes. Yeah, linking to another website, sorry Kotaku. [www.gamesradar.com]
Yeah, GR has a way of being late to the party. He'll just stand around drinking by the keg, commenting on the girls there. They just wish they could work up the courage to walk up to the hot girl, no matter how drunk Crecente is.

@K-Squad! (Badass Edition):
Yeah, what are they gonna do now? I mean, Mothers Against Drunk Driving aren't nearly as annoying. Of course, they are far more credible, if just as false in their claims.
Not that drunk driving is not a problem, just in the context of GTA IV... I'll stop digging this hole.
