Silent Hill Homecoming Refused Classification In...
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:40 PM on September 26, 2008
...Australia or Germany? Go on, guess! OK, well done, the correct answer is indeed Australia. Still hamstrung by the South Australian state Attorney-General's refusal to amend the country's classification laws (currently games don't have the R18+ rating movies do, and all six state AGs need to agree to change the law), Silent Hill: Homecoming has become the latest high-profile game to be refused classification in Australia, a move that practically bans the game from these antipodean shores. Those that have already played the game will suspect the decision was due to quality control concerns, but in reality it'll have been down the game's gore. Or, sorry, "gore".

I hope it's not just cheep thrills and scares
Silent Hill 1 and 2 were both genuinely frightening gaming experiences back in the day, Silent Hill 3 and 4, not so much
Let's hope this is decent, or else I'm looking at you Dead Space, for my scares this Halloween

I'm a huge fan of the Silent Hill series, but once I heard a western dev. was involved I lost all interest. Japanese horror games and movies always give me those "wow that's fucked up" moments-something Western movies and games never give me.
Now of course they've said they'll stay close to the originals, which basically means copying everything thats already been done before, instead of letting the japanese devs. create something new that pushes the envelope like we've come to know they do.
Of course I could be wrong, but I don't think Australia is going to miss out on anything too special.

concerning this, and all new/ digital media and its distribution;
i estimate one, at most two more iterations of management over the next ten or so years until people in-the-fucking-know concerning tech(teens, 20-30 year olds) start to run shit, and understand the way of the modern world.
no monopoly-looking motherfuckers with monacles and spats controlling 21st century media, dammit!

What do Australians play? Half the games are never released there or with cut out features....MOH: Heroes 2 had no multiplayer (the crux of the game) and half of the remainder are outright banned!!!
I guess Nintendo E for everyone dominate there since everything above 14 is banned.
Do you guys even have online in Brawl?

@mlubczyk: Yeah, you pretty much nailed most of the bannings there. We also got a chopped up GTA3 re-release after someone realised you could solicit hookers. And as you know, everyone hates us over Fallout 3.
The lack of multiplayer only seems to hit Nintendo consoles, Brawl is okay. The XBL/PSN work fine here for playing games. Its neutered as far as the video marketplace is concerned however.

I'd be curious to read the OFLC's report on this one.
As much as people like to slam them, the OFLC board does a very good job, considering the restrictions they have to work with.
We haven't had a single Resident Evil or Silent Hill game refused classification in the past, which leads me to believe that there's something different in this case.
My bet is on either over-the-top gore, or something to do with rape or sexual violence. The former is a tricky subject; the latter is an automatic "GTFO."

@Blah8: That's what I think a lot of people don't seem to understand.
This isn't an issue of "draconian censorship" as much as it's an issue of bureaucracy.
Some stuffy old law written years and years ago is out of touch with modern times, but is extremely difficult/impossible to alter.
But then, I'm sure Americans know what that's like.

Only Luke Plunkett would dig a word like antipodean out of the depths of the English language. I bet it was pretty damn happy, not being bothered all the time like some other celebrity words (a, the, IT) and you had to fuck it all up and bring it into the public eye.
Thanks, Luke...

@Chibirazi: actually I applaud them for this, if it eventually forces the Ao ratings to actually be issued so that software can be made and sold with Ao ratings on consoles then we will have MUCH more titles geared toward adults, GTA for one won't be an issue with hot coffee or drug dealing missions or stealing some dudes infernous ... Dead or Alive EBV could have actually been what they wanted it to be, with nudity similar to Illusion games released only in japan. There won't be any more issues with ratings since 'Adults only' is kinda specific.

I've only gotten into the series in the past 6 months, and I thought the PS1 classic was a genuinely fun and terrifying experience, regardless of blocky, antiquated graphics; the puzzles were so fun to solve. SH2's story and gameplay weren't bad, but I found it a little tedious and slow at times with all the lengthy trekking on-foot. Parts 3 and 4 were so forgettable, and "Origins" had a good story and concept with even more tedious gameplay (i.e. weapons that break). Somehow, I don't see this installment pushing any envelopes that haven't been opened previously, sans better graphics. I'll wait 'till there's a used copy at about half of the release price.

@Strife56: I'll have to disagree with you in regards to SH2 and SH3. For me SH2 wasn't that scary but SH3 definitely was. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I played SH3 before SH2 or maybe for the fact that after the first 2 games played in a series the scare factor wears out. For me SH1 is still the scariest (and the best) game of them all though.
