Activision Trademarks 'Dance Hero'
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 6:40 AM on September 27, 2008
We'll bet you never saw this one coming. A recent filing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office shows that Activision has filed a mark for Dance Hero, claiming services such as "interactive video game programs" and "video game controllers." The filing comes soon after first details on DJ Hero were posted on Kotaku, a trademark Activision filed for in February.
While we imagine that Activision's theoretical take on the dancing game genre, if that's what the trademark is intended for, will require the rhythmic stepping on of various buttons and/or arrows. If we were in charge, Dance Hero would involve serious amounts of "serving" and a group of gold-hearted, brightly outfitted underdog street toughs who band together for a dance off to save their struggling community and maybe learn a lesson or two about diversity along the way.

And now we've come full circle... The adulation and sychophantry all amounts to nothing, as Activision finally releases a version of the original concept they added a "guitar" and "hero" to. Nonsense... All of it. I could not stomach the words tossed at the game like "revolutionary" when DDR and its ilk sobbed quietly in a dusty corner of a dark room.

They are killing the franchise with this and they´re missing the point completely. Guitar Hero is a term used among fans of music and guitarrists, everyone with a little brain knows that. Jimi was a guitar hero, Page is a guitar hero, Angus Young, Zakk Wylde, Vai, Satriani, you name it. There is no DJ HERO! What´s heroic about being a DJ? Oh, I press buttons, so cool... and Dance hero? Oh, I move my legs, I think I´m a spider now... FUCK THAT ACTIVISION! Slowly die and rot...

As a big DDR player I approve this. Konami could sue the little guy away in In The Groove's case, but this will be much more interesting and could open the door for the little guys again. One can dream!
For anyone who doesn't know (that is everyone minus maybe one other guy who reads this comment), In The Groove is (was) like DDR but with better graphics and a higher maximum difficulty.
Activision, a few pointers from an enthusiast (assuming you are going to make a DDR-like):
1) Pick good songs (I think they're going to get this one)
2) Hire people who are respected for making good stepcharts in the Stepmania community, or get your team to do their homework before making charts
3) Have extremely difficult charts appear in a variety of music, not just super-fast hardcore music.
4) DDR (etc) playing geeks are the biggest geeks in the world. Open a forum for us and you'll get a lot of helpful feedback.

Activision is soooo stupid. They are murdering Guitar Hero and Call of Duty. They need to stop focusing so much on money and making sure they put out how ever many titles per year and start taking more time to make sure they are putting out quality games even though it might take a little longer than they want it to. And they need to make IW the only developer of Call of Duty and they need to let them take however much time they want and let them do other games when they feel like it. With Guitar Hero they should make one (only one) every year or (preferably) two so that each one could be higher quality and have better graphics (even though they don't matter too much for GH) because I love Guitar Hero but I don't want to get tired of it anytime soon and I (and many others) wouldn't mind waiting two years for another (higher quality) GH game.

Once again Activision proves just how unoriginal and void of anything new or exciting they are.
Harmonix better get cracking on these new IP's so Activision can copy them. Right now all they can do in the meantime is trademark anything that they can think of that could be made into a game. Dancing, DJing, hmm, if we were Harmonix what would we do?

@headcase88:
1) You think they're going to pick good songs? I'd be worried that they'll pick mainstream songs - most of Konami's are already too mainstream (I don't just mean the licensed ones or cover versions that are literally mainstream - many of the originals are pretty bland as well). That said, a bit of cheese never really hurt DDR I guess, and yeah, I even like most of the Naoki songs, so whatever...
3) I disagree - putting crazy-fast charts on not-that-fast music is silly. Not every song has to be stupidly hard. Save the hard charts for songs that sound hard. Making charts fit the music is what the game should be about.
I've got ITG!, it was good and all, but does the world really need 11-foot songs (even 10)? If you can reliably AAA all the 9-foot songs without bar-raping so that they're not even a challenge or physical exercise... maybe you're too good to play. :) If you can't, why do you need something harder?
(Disclaimer: I passed like one 9-foot song in my entire life.)
My request for Activision would be:
PLEASE GOD NO GUITAR MUSIC
I don't really care if it's cheesy but everything in the damn game should be dance music (any genre, cheesy dance-pop or whatever is fine, not picky about it, but please nothing that totally isn't dance at all - Konami had a few like that, they all suck).
Also there's lots of good hardcore and drum and bass so when they do need fast music I hope they look that way and don't make up songs that are utter crap where the only point is to be fast (Paranoia and relatives, I'm looking at you). Okay it's rare to find anything more than 180bpm, so maybe there still have to be some stupid songs, but...
Oh and my request for some other company: if this is a success, please make a gadget so I can plug my Cobalt Flux (PS2 connection) into Wii to be compatible with this game and Konami's. I don't really feel like buying and eviscerating a GC pad just to make a converter...

Posted 10:21 AM 27/9/08
Considering how stagnant DDR has become recently, I'm excited about this new game, even if the gameplay is pretty much identical. I am so tired of buying a DDR game that has 50-70 new songs, only to find that half of those are crappy techno/dance tunes made by Benami, and half of the remaining songs are horribly done covers of licensed music which may or may not have been all that great to begin with. And why in the world can't Konami sell dance mats separately from the games? And then there are the Wii DDR titles, BOTH of which cannot be bought without a mat, a fact which has kept me from buying the sequel because I already have a mat and don't need another one!
So, uh, yeah, a new DDR style game would be welcome, because DDR really needs some competition to force the series to improve. Right now, DDR is like the Microsoft of dance rhythm games, and that's not good for anyone.
