GameStop Pushes Rise of The Argonauts To 2009
Posted by Mike Fahey at 12:40 AM on September 27, 2008
Dammit! Several readers have dropped us a line to let us know that the release date for Codemasters' action RPG Rise of the Argonauts, according to retailer GameStop at least, has slipped to 1/1/2009, which in release date speak means sometime after the beginning of the new year. I just called my local GameStop where I had a reserve down and they confirmed that they are now showing the new date in their system. I've dropped a line to Codemasters, but GameStop isn't generally in the habit of pushing back a title's release date arbitrarily - pre-order now and have it in a month sounds a lot better than pre-order it now for sometime next year.
I know this fall is littered with amazing, blockbuster releases we've been waiting years to play, but this was the one I was really looking forward to playing. If I were a panda right now, I would not be a very happy one.

@I_Hate_This_Place: "dump there awesomeness on us all at one time" makes me feel so dirty!

Good. That means I won't have to ignore it this holdiay season and there will be a good game available for me during the "drought". I really wish more developers didn't strive to dump their awesomeness on us all at one time during the year.

Looked forward to this, but I think it needs a visual overhaul. The cutscenes, and character conversations looked horrible with very little facial animation etc.
Also Heracles looks retarded, but I guess that won't change. Anyway the premise is interesting and I hope they take the time they need to get it up to snuff.

@ExistentialEgg:
Agreed. Way too many high-profile games are comin' out in the next three months, and if Mirror's Edge, LBP, Gears 2, Fallout 3, Resistance 2 and Prince of Persia aren't taking all the attention, it could be a dark horse like Dead Space (which by every account is looking outstanding). Argonauts would just get lost in the shuffle.
As well, this game always struck me as one with a lot of potential. A few more months to iron out kinks and add some polish is never a bad thing - especially for an untested franchise.

This is a game that I don't mind a delay on. I feel like to would have been lost in the fall / winter game releases. I'd rather them take their time and release a solid game. I have high hopes for it.

Speaking to the game slump, though, I wonder if developers realize that during the summer/August/September, when we're lacking games, is the perfect time to release PSN games? I bought Bionic Commando Rearmed for lack of things to play, I've been eyeing Super Stardust HD, I own Everyday Shooter and Pixeljunk Monsters ... if Wipeout weren't $20 I'd probably fork for that -- all considering that the two blockbusters I want to play, Fallout 3 and LBP, do not release for another 30 days or so.
Hint hint developers: If you don't have time for a full-on AAA game, we DO buy arcade games quite frequently! BRING IT ON.

@I_Hate_This_Place: Agreed, there was barely anything to play all summer and now that most everyone is off holidays, there's a game a week+ (give or take)

@NorthernAvengeR: At least they're sticking close to the original in this case. The original Heracles wasn't the brightest mind in greek mythology..

Not that it means much, but one of the devs that was at PAX actually stated that there is no way this game will be pushed into 2009.
Regardless, i'm glad they did because even though the PAX demo was a lot of fun, looked great, and I enjoyed it muchly, they had a lot of work to do on it.
I think this will only help the game.

I saw this at PAX and I am glad to see that it will have more time in the oven. I praise Codemasters for their foresight in pushing this back.

@Razgriz1:
Seeing as Rise of the Argonauts is an action RPG releasing on PS3, 360, & PC; and GoW is a PS3 exclusive action game I sorta fail to see your point.

Good call on their part to delay.
Far too many AAA titles coming out in the next few months.
This way, they'll get a decent chance to sell units.

@NorthernAvengeR:
Any title that gets delayed rarely gets a visual overhaul. It's probably bugs and such that need to squashed out. To me the graphics look fine.

From what I've seen of this game it looks decidely rubbish. I'm thinking it won't see the light of day in 2009 either.

The Trailer i saw a while ago was kind of dissapointing...
I hope the final product is better, because the 360 could really use some mythology-styled games

Damn. I was looking forward to this game too. It actually looked really good and the I was interest was particularly piqued by some of the new gameplay mechanics and the lack of a menu system for an RPG. Oh and the combat looks satisfying.

GameStop employee here, the actual release date is going to be later than 1/1/09. The way Corporate works is that if they believe or know a game isn't coming out for a while, they'll push the date back to a 1/1/whatever or a 6/1/whatever. Look at that day on the GameStop site, and it will have a large number of games selected for release on that day. As that day gets closer, they'll push the release date back further on the website, until they get a confirmed date from the publisher.
