Wii Virtual Console Adds Another Console
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 9:40 AM on September 27, 2008
Unfortunately, it's the NEC SuperGrafx, a souped up version of the PC Engine (nee TurboGrafx-16) that was never released outside of Japan and has a meager seven titles in its library. Even less exciting is that the first SuperGrafx release is Daimakaimura, known as Ghouls 'n' Ghosts on these shores. That particular title has been available on Japan's Virtual Console service in its Genesis form since July of last year — and for 200 yen less!
But hey, at least things are expanding. Any chance we can start getting some Game Boy Advance games from the VC? Pretty please?

Seems to me Nintendo are desperately trying to protect their own ips from VC by signing up every other retro console around.
There are still hundreds of SNES, NES and N64 games that we would all love to see but Nintendo just seem to be far to overprotective and reluctant to release them, I'm still waiting for SNES mario kart, N64 wrestlers.
it's one of the reasons I bought my Wii, and one of the reasons I installed the homebrew channel so I can bypass Nintendo's pathetic attitude.

@Saint Anima: It would be interesting if Nintendo can release a console emulator that would allow you to use the original disc media. That would eliminate the need for large downloads and storage.

that said I think GBC games are more important right now...

They have to be running our of mediocre games by this point.
On the subject of Gameboy games, if they ever released Pokemon Red/Blue through VC, it would eclipse the other releases so much that everything would wither and die. The Japanese would download 8 copies each just to make sure they didn't accidentally delete 7 of them.

Original GameBoy (4 colour) games would be really sweet, even better if we could upload them to DS after we bought them. GBA is the closest console to the SNES, so those would be also welcome.
What I really (REALLY!) want on the VC is Commodore Amiga games. Nintendo, get the hint.
PS: Games are still way overpriced, Nintendo. 5 €uros for a C64, Master system and NES games? Come on...

You know, I am certain that this system is totally awesome and everyone is stoked to play its five games. However, I would prefer to have Sega Saturn emulated on the virtual console. My disc of Dragon Force is scratched so I can play just fine until the very end, at which point it freezes. This limits me from playing Reinhart and I love playing Reinhart. Solve my disc problems Nintendo!!!

Has anyone ever heard of this system? This system has to be the least known system in the history of gaming consoles. I remember Turbo Grafx 16 when I was ten and I still thought it sucked.

Actually, I'm an rpg fan since, well dragon warrior 1 and I would rather play ghouls n ghosts, earthbound sucks in my point of view because of it's linearity, limited combat, no choice of upgrades, the game is always the same every time. It was ok first time around but I'm never gonna play it again

@jimmyNewtron:No, it's more like Nintendo has figured out. "Hey, this system is entering into it's 3rd year of life, systems are on a five year time span, we might not want to blow our load right off of the bat."
There's also the issue that every time a game is re-released, they have to get the okey for it, you speak of the N64 Wrestling Games, well none of those were released by Nintendo, they were third party releases and not only would the current holder of the wrestling rights for games have to do it, they would also have to contact the guys who did it before as well as strikes -new- deals with WWE and very likely maybe even with various wrestlers who are no longer active or even alive. Copyrights and Trademarks are a pitfall.
So before going and blasting Nintendo for not releasing the games you want right now, maybe you should go do your homework and figure out if Nintendo published or even developered the game in the first place.
Nintendo has to flesh out the VC with other systems as much as possible or they would blow their wad within a year and folks like you would still be bitching. While I agree releasing more of their first party stuff would help, VC can not live on Nintendo alone.
@DrPhilbert:Saturn is a bitch to emu. Plus Dragon Force was a Working Designs release, who is now completely defunct, so even if the Saturn does hit, seeing WD games on it is slim to none.
@HikariOblivion:Gameboy games are supposed to be slated for VC release, but yes, GBA is unlikely till DS2, as the current DS plays every GBA game just fine and the DS sells like crazy.

Install Homebrew channel and there is no region issues.
AND you can try before you buy WiiWare titles (most of which are crap) something that is sadly lacking on the Wii.
VC titles are absurdly overpriced considering
you are just getting a ROM.
That's it. No enhancements. No online. No new features.
Considering most titles on XBLA are revamped, enhanced, or totally redesigned for about the same money, that sucks big time.
Even PSN has more bang for the buck than VC with it's original IP. The PS1 downloads are overpriced in my opinion. I get PS1 games in decent condition at my local mom&pop game store for about $5.
Screw that noise!
Even back at E3 2006, I felt the price model should have went for a more iTunes style $.99 or $1.99 per game. When they revealed the prices I found it insulting and typical of greedy marketing slime.
The big N is raping you with nostalgia factor and the assumption that most people that love this shit are 30+ years old with disposable income to throw around in order to relive their youth.
I've bought 1 title from each system just to see how the VC emulator compares to the PC or the Xbox Media Center emulators.
I own most of the games I love from the 8 and 16-bit era and am not about to fork over $8-$12 just to play them on my Wii.
Got Homebrew Channel, a couple 2GB SD
cards and never looked back.

It's sad. but I don't think dreamcast emulation is going to happen. It takes a one hell of a processor (i think the minimum reqs on Chankast are something like 2ghz and god only knows what kinda gfx card)
In any case, i doubt we'll be seeing anything newer than the n64 era on VC.

Ooh, generalizations! I can do it too!
*ahem*
"Gee, you fanboys will use anything you can to justify bending over and taking it, won't you?"
No, seriously. "Map the controls"? are you daft? It probably takes one guy less than five minutes to do this. No wait, it's probably a moot point. I'd almost say that all of the VC games for a given system share the same emulation (and by extension, controller)code.. the hardest part of a given release is probably getting the manual in there!
Whereas I can load up an emulator, play any game I want, and also get the benefits of cheats and save states (which the wii vc implements.. sort of. brokenly.)
Inferior product for $10,
Superior product for free
Really, it's not that difficult of a choice.

@Barbara:
It's basically a Turbografx 16 with an additional background layer, double the sprites, and scaling + rotation. It never took off in Japan, despite being a capable powerhouse. For years folks have been going off the rumor that it was too weak to handle the new graphic upgrades, which simply wasn't true at all.
The only two worthwhile games for the system were 1941 and Ghouls N' Ghosts, which is several times better and more arcade-faithful than the Genesis version.
