'Gang Garrison II' -- TF2's 8-Bit Bastard Brother
Posted by Owen Good at 11:00 AM on September 28, 2008
Remember Portal for the C64 emulator? Reader burgerk1ng has a nice find to go with it: "Gang Garrison II" by "Faucet" software -- an 8-bit, fully multiplayer "de-make" for PC gamers. I am ... retarded close to going out and getting a copy of Windows and Boot Camp, which would make this the most expensive free game in the history of anything. On the other hand, maybe it's a good thing I don't have a PC, as my expectations could only shattered. Gameplay video and links on the jump.
GG2 is in a complete 1.0 stage and clocks in at 4.8 MB. There's a deep forum discussion on its creation over at TIG Forums, and its periodically updated.
Of course, I feel obligated to tell you to take all sorts of reasonable precautions with what .exe's you download and install. But if you do play it, let everyone know your impressions in the comments. Mine: the sprites, at least in the close-up stills, look nice and familiar. Gameplay seems to follow the same kind of running/jumping physics, if a little skimpy on the animations.
burgerk1ng says it's a fun game. The file can be found here and here. Boilerplate caution about downloading and installing .exes from strangers.
Gang Garrison II [FINISHED] [TIGForums, big thanks reader burgerk1ng]

@Fadakar:
It does have online multiplayer, unless thats all simulated :\ , but I am pretty sure that was online - the bit of lag I had and all lol...
But it is fun :) Reminds me VERY much of TF2, online, movement, music, graphics, etc. They did a great job in that dept.

I'm just annoyed that while they've linked to several individual TIGSource demake entries they've yet to actually link to the competition site itself, which includes a torrent of ALL entries. Highlighting demakes of uber popular games like TF2 and Portal is nice and all, but I'd really like to see the hard work of all of entrants put out before the public.

Hi Owen, If you want to get Windows running on your mac on the cheap I suggest downloading the free VirtualBox for Intel Macs ([www.virtualbox.org]) and getting a copy of WinXP from somewhere online (I bet you can find it cheap now that Vistas been out for awhile.) It's a VERY easy setup and the result is WindowsXP (or Vista if you choose) running inside a window inside OSX. You need decent hardware to prevent it from being to slow but it works very well. I use it at work everyday when I need to move away from graphic design projects and deal more with web development.

@Đipic: Since the latest "updates", it hasn't been. They keep "improving" the game, which keeps making it more un-fun and more unbalanced.
Hopefully, they'll "improve" everyone so much, and make the game so much more unbalanced, that it will actually balance itself.
TF2 was fine and perfect the way it was, them changing it took away all of the fun the game ever had.

@LegendK1ll3r:
Really, I find the updates to be interesting and actually add a lot more depth to the game. It's almost becoming more balanced because of the updates. Sure, all the classes aren't to that state yet so if you are some class that gets affected by another classes update, I can see your fustration.
I usually play medic or spy so I haven't experienced anything really disheartening to me. I find the game more enjoyable than it was when I first bought it.

@LegendK1ll3r: Oh please, you don't actually believe that do you? The game is incredibly balanced, even with the updates. The game stats prove that. It's just in your head. But if for some reason you still believe otherwise, here's a novel idea for you: Play on a server that doesn't allow use of unlockable items. Look at that, game fun again.
@DreamDivision: Indeed. Maybe you should have said "Makes me wish that I still found TF2 to be enjoyable." or something along those things.

Posted 4:26 AM 29/9/08
@LegendK1ll3r: i always thought that was the point. by dumping all of the classes in at once it'd be a big pissing contest and the game would be ridiculously unbalanced, requiring a second major update to level the playing field. By rolling out changes one at a time the game is slightly unbalanced, allowing them to tweak balance as they go and add more updates (as an example, they tweaked the way the backburner worked because it threw the game in the pyro's favor). it's basically this:
a: one gigantic patch after a long time, followed by a second patch months later to balance it. who knows if people are still playing by then
b: several small patches every few months to continually introduce new content, thus exciting a majority of their userbase (you excluded it seems), with balancing tweaks hidden in the patches followed by one final capstone patch to finalize game balance.
i thought the new updates were fun. the sandvich was my favorite. i always play about two weeks after big patches roll out; that's when people are still achievement whoring.

@Đipic:
Yes, it's obviously just in my head, that the game as isn't as fun anymore with all of these high / over powered classes running around.
I can go and play the 360 version, and although it has horrible controls, it'll still be the balanced game it once was. It doesn't have these useless updates, that only make the game more un-fun, annoying, and bothersome.
I've been a TF fan since it came out, yes, the ORIGINAL. You probably have no idea of the joygasm's I had after hearing TF2 was finally coming out, after it being promised for what, 6 or more years? It quickly rose above CS / CS:S as my favorite PC game after the second I got it. Hell, I even own it on the 360 and the PC, and own many other copies of every HL game there is, including atleast 3 copies of HL2 itself.
To show you how dedicated I am to Steam and Valve, I PREORDERED Condition Zero. That takes commitment!
So yes, someone who has been playing HL since it's inception, someone who has played TF from it's inception, someone who played CS for years on end, someone who has experience in every field known to man when it comes to Valve / Steam (I've also worked on skinning, modding, and map making too, so yes, every field) - yet, when I see an update that unbalances the game, it's just in my head?
Sorry. It's not. I'm a veteran when it comes to the TF series, or any series Valve releases (Gearbox, as-well), I'm a loyal and avid fan - so don't think me saying the game unbalanced is just out of "spite" or any other reason you will probably come up with.
The fact is, that the updates have taken a game from being fun, to making it not so fun. It's still a good game, mind you, but ever since the updates, it's just lost it's luster.
That's also why I said, that hopefully, they will roll out unbalanced updates for everyone, so that eventually, with everyone so unbalanced, it will actually end up balancing the game again. Not in the good way, but better then it is now.
That's my 2 cents, enjoy.

The only problem with this game is that engineers and spies do not have full functionality yet :( QQ
There are some technical issues, people get problems connecting to servers sometimes, and get disconnected easily with a couple different error messages. But that aside, its really an awesome 'demake' lol.
Pretty fun, i've a got a 1.0 server up and I guess i'll let it run while i'm at work today. (Jesliserver is the name on the lobby list.)
