New Xbox Experience Site Launches
Posted by Owen Good at 6:00 AM on September 28, 2008
Check your email, you probably just got a notice from Microsoft inviting you to a site demonstrating the new Xbox Live experience. No, a release date is not specified. The site features examples of the content and features you can expect once it does arrive, presented in a simulation of the new dashboard. There are videos on avatar creation and interaction with your friends (some of which we've already seen), and another touting its online entertainment capabilities. Everything has the bigger-better-more company shine on it. The addition of the Inside Xbox channel looks intriguing, but few specifics beyond the teasers offered.

It looks cool but I'm just sick of waiting. Its not like this is something I have to pay extra for. I would almost rather be kept in the dark till a week before the launch then they would reveal everything that I'm about to have. Same with home as well. Don't tell me "soon." Tell me when or don't tell me at all.

You know, I don't care what the majority opinion is, I think this looks like a marked improvement over the current dashboard. I think it looks cleaner, smoother, and overall just more aesthetically pleasing. All the whining about it isn't going to change the fact that Microsoft is implementing it whether you like it or not.

As much as people bash this, it's a good move by M$.
A Mii-ripoff, yes, but Nintendo isn't exactly doing anything to secure their original ideas, now are they?
The most frequent question asked by non-gamers when they played my Wii was "do they have such-and-such and item/hairstyle...etc.". This looks to have a ton of different options and it will be pretty cool to be able to create an Xbox Avatar.
I liked the Blades, but at the same time, it needed a refresh. This is a drastic change, but I think after it's out, people will get used to it and eventually embrace it just like many did when Nintendo announced the title of it's console as "Wii".

@moutski: Agreed. Add to this the fact that MS have said from the start that if you want you'll be able to mostly ignore the new look and just use the original blades (which are being integrated into the new Guide), and there's very little to complain about. If it makes the interface quicker to use I'm all for it. Plus, copying games to the HDD: that's basically the best feature they ever could have added to the 360 given how noisy it is while spinning discs.

It looks nice, but I don't think its any better than the current dashboard. Merely an aesthetic update that isn't really necessary, doesn't really bring anything new to the table other than looking spiffy. I bought a 360 to play games, not look at the interface.. but if they improve the ability to access shared files/movies/music/pictures over the home network, that would be nice. As of right now the 360 is useless as a media center unless you have TVersity installed on your PC, and even still with that, its still light years behind a modded original XBOX with XBOX Media Center.

Okay, clearing this up once and for all.
To all the people that keep going around telling everyone that you don't need to install this, or that you can disable it and simply use the old dashboard - YOU CANNOT. YOU ARE WRONG.
Major Nelson has been misquoted SO many times with this, he needs to just come out and explain it, otherwise there are gonna be a lot of p*ssed off gamers calling him a liar come November.
What he said was you never ever to use the new dashboard, and that you still have all the options of the original blades interface. What he means is that you can simply bypass the new dashboard like you can with the current one by setting the option to always go straight into the game you have in the 360 when you turn it on.
And what he meant by using 'all the options of the original blades interface' is that the guide has now been updated to LOOK like the blades. The major difference is that its small and in the middle of the screen. Yes it contains all the same options, but it is NOT the dashboard you currently have.
That dashboard (And this is the important part...) WILL BE GONE FOREVER WHEN YOU INSTALL THIS *MANDATORY* UPDATE

Owen - the 'Inside Xbox' section has been in the dashboard for months now. It's updated pretty much daily either with release lists, news tidbits and blog-like updates, or exclusive videos straight from Microsoft. There have been loads of brilliant 'insider' interviews from Rare with lots of Banjo footage I've still yet to see online anywhere - plus E3 brought its own videos to the service too.
The layout may be new in the new dash, but its been there for a very long time already!

@Kazzahdrane: Yeah, too bad the game has to be IN the DVD drive even though your running it off the HDD.
It makes no sense, you might aswell save your 5GB for arcade games, and etc.
Microsoft is tricking you all, and you don't even know it.
"Hey everyone listen, you can now put the game on the HDD!"
"Hey look everyone a price drop for the 120GB hard drive, it's now $140!!"
$140 for like 120GB is flipping stupid. Did you see the relation?

@Wizxon:
Maybe I'm exceptionally intelligent for a Scotsman, but I'm pretty sure I'm not being tricked.
It's pretty damn obvious why you need to have the DVD in the drive. They don't want people renting the game and then essentially "keeping" it.
I lose about 5(ish)GB on my 360's HDD, and I (hopefully) get faster load times, and my gaming experience is MUCH quieter. I'm not sure where exactly the trick lies...
You're arguing that MS is adding this feature to sell more 120GB HDDs? Fair enough, maybe it will work for them. I already have an Elite...so....I'm pretty happy to be honest.

Well you have a point. The xbox fanbase (some of them) is being a bit vain in thinking this new update is actually shoddy and uncomplimentary.
I wonder how they would feel then if they were forced to use the Wii's lackluster GUI or PSN's boring sidescroller.
People need to be appreciative when they're being treated this nicely. In other words, 360 users should be greatful they have things THIS GOOD.

@Gabryael: What is it they don't get? What, in all honesty, would knowing the exact date of release do? Would it make it better? Would it help you in any real way? Would it solve world hunger? What?
What they get is that teasers and slow reveals works. People seem to enjoy that. Movies do it, games do it, it's a huge part of many advertising campaigns.
So what is it they don't get? They don't get that you have some strange obsession with knowing release dates? Here you go. November 15th. There's a release date.
What's different?

@mnsxx:
Not to be derisive, but please try to control your language a bit.
Microsofts avatars are light years BETTER than anything Nintendo has done with the Mii's in the last 2 decades or what they are currently doing now (which is nothing at all btw!). There is NO COMPARISON whatsoever, not in the purpose they serve, not in the features that each is capable off, nor in the integration that each will play with their respective online/GUI services. If you own both a Wii and 360 as you claim, then I question your credibility as a gamer to stand by and support the lacklustre avatar system Nintendo has been benchmarking for more than 2 years now over what Microsoft has just recently done which is already poised to overthrow Nintendo's joke of a profile GUI.
Nintendo HAS a lot to learn from Microsoft (ALOT!!), and they really need to really watch MS closely in the next year and a half to see where they going with this new avatar system, and how they might quite possible reinvent the feature to even better heights and more novel experiences.
The word "ripoff" is completelybaseless at this point because to "ripoff" means to emulate something, not SURPASS it. Please stop thinking like a simple minded "Kotakuan" for once in your life and start thinking like a true gamer who wants the best for this industry regardless of where your loyalties lie. This is the only way we can move forward as gamers and restore things to the way they once where or perhaps even make them better than they were before

Do you guys really think this "New xbox experience" or "playstation home" is that big of a deal. I mean how many of you guy actually just stay on the dashboard or the cross media bar, seriously. As for me i just start playing a game or watch a video. These are cool additions to the system but then what, are you just going to look through it or play a game. I mean its like "look i can chat and change the theme, now what?" its great that you can get together with friends then start a game as a group, I don't know about xbox experience, can someone let me know, like in the warhawk war room to plan strategies. As for me im not that exited about the new dashboard and home cause i use my systems to play games not just chat to chat.
Remember this, Its one thing to be told how hot a girl is, its completely different to see for yourself!

Try the second first, and if that fails, backup your bookmarks and such and do the first if you'd like.

I think this is a good move for a few reasons. But one reason no one can say is bad, is that the current Dash doesn't look to hot on HD sometimes, themes get pixelated, text gets blurred and just doesn't look all that "up with the times"
Im looking forward to the whole netflix thing the most. cause a Mac user, I do not get to watch netflix on my laptop (they currently don't have a contract or some crap)
