Steam Hosting Mods Beginning Next Week
Posted by Owen Good at 7:00 AM on September 28, 2008
Steam's announced that, beginning next week, it'll be hosting five mods that will be freely available for all who own the mod's source game. Additionally, the mods will take advantage of Steamworks' stat tracking and "tighter integration with the Steam community."
The five mods are Age of Chivalry, D.I.P.R.I.P., Insurgency, Synergy, and Zombie Panic. Full announcement on the jump.
As a part of our continuing efforts to support the MOD community, we will begin hosting selected MODs directly on Steam starting next week. The first five MODs to ship on steam will be Age of Chivalry, D.I.P.R.I.P., Insurgency, Synergy, and Zombie Panic. As always, owners of any Source game will be able to download and play all of these MODs for free.
Once installed, these MODs will appear in your "My Games" list and will receive automatic updates just like other games on Steam. Also, these MODs now take advantage of Steamworks, which provides stat tracking and tighter integration with the Steam community.
We're excited to see MOD developers get wider recognition for the hard work they have done, and we hope to support more MOD teams in the future. Watch for the official release next week!

Man I found Insurgency and Synergy hard...but probably because everyone else plays the game 24/7.
Zombie Panic Source was ok...I might play it again if other people will...I'll need something zombie-related to keep me busy until the end of November.

Nice! If Zombie Panic passed Valve's seal of approval, then I guess I should re-install it. Last time I tried it, it was too buggy to play, then I forgot all about it.

Age of Chivalry is definately a deserving mod to be Steamed. A lot of hard work went into it, and it's awesome.

It would be cool if steam gave steam users some storage space to upload our own individual mods we have collected over time. Its a pain to reinstall a games and have to hunt down all those old game mods again. Having our own personal storage space would make gaming life a lot better.

Zombie Panic and Age of Chivalry are both good. Its awesome that Valve is doing this, it will help these mods reach a great number of people and make it easier to keep them up to date.

Not to sound like an advertisement, but you can find loads of great single player mods for Half-Life 2 on PlanetPhillip: [www.planetphillip.com]
I recommend Minerva: Metastasis, Riot Act, Rock 24, and Union. :)
Minerva is so good, its author was hired by Valve. It really is a fantastic mod. I would say it's even more enjoyable than most of the official Episodic content!

I remember the Natural Selection creators saying that some people at valve were going to do the same thing with their game years ago, but it never happened because Valve didn't want to throw support for a HL1 mod.

In the early days it WAS pretty bad. It was very buggy, the drm was more draconian, and it did not help that the physical copies of HL2 was missing files needed to run the game(I am still pissed about that). This was also the time when they LIED to us about the release of HL2, ignored its fans when they wanted answers for MONTHS after HL2 was supposed to be released, etc..etc. Lets not sugar coat this, there was a LOT of problems back in the day. Steam has come a long way and I love it, but I always have a fear that they will either shut it down one day or EA(or someone like them) will buy them out. That will be the day that I will grab a crowbar and visit valve. :)

@Justo:Yes I do. I have been using Steam (kind of had to) since 2004, and at first I hated it. There were a lot of gliches, and one time I forgot my Steam i.d. and fuck me if that wasn't a bigger problem than it should have been.
The one big advantage now though is, you can sign in, download and play any game you have ever purchase off of Steam, and play them anywhere and on any PC you choose. No CD, no hassle.

Wow, great news for modders. This is totally what the scene needs, mainstream pushing of small projects. This is definitely a plus for those good mods that get less attention than they deserve.

"Steam's announced that, beginning next week, it'll be hosting five mods that will be freely available for all who own the mod's source game."
Not quite; they're actually freely available to anyone who owns at least one game running on the Source engine, ie. Half Life 2, HL2: Deathmatch, Counterstrike: Source, Day of Defeat: Source, TF2, Portal, etc.
Since you can get a free copy of HL2: DM if you own an ATI or NVIDIA card, does that mean pretty much anyone will be able to play these games for free?

All mods can be found at www.moddb.com - good site
I want to know if they will add Fortress Forever, or if they are worried it would take away from TF2
