300 Director's EA Games Could Become Movies
Posted by Brian Crecente at 11:00 PM on September 29, 2008
Following Variety's story early this morning that Zack Snyder, the man behind such films as The Dawn of the Dead and 300, has signed a deal with EA to make three games, comes the official announcement.
Filmmaker Snyder, whose latest project is the movie adaptation of Watchmen, will be working with EA Los Angeles, the same studio which worked with Steven Spielberg on Boom Blox. Under the agreement with Cruel & Unusual Film, EA will own the rights to the games which they will develop, publish and distribute worldwide. EA and Snyder will also work to "extend the game franchises into theatrical motion pictures."
"I think video games are cool because they offer an opportunity to tell a story in an entirely unique way, said Zack Snyder. "Being a long time fan of the games EA creates, I look forward to collaborating with them."
Frank Gibeau, President of EA Games Label said, "Zack Snyder has a fresh and bold creative style that resonates with our core audience. Zack is the perfect partner for joining us in creating powerful new interactive fiction."

@RET_Ghost: Did you bother to read the second? It's actually different. Has quotes, new information, links to the first article.

I may be crazy, but I think this will work. Not only does the man make movies that scream "make a videogame out of me" but a videogame made with a movie in mind will probably result in a good movie, if not game.

Said Zack Snyder [while wiping a brown substance from his nose with a $100 bill] "Being a long time fan of the games EA creates, I look forward to collaborating with them."

Doesn't this just sound like a spectacular idea? An idea doomed to fail spectacularly, that is, but spectacular nonetheless.
EA's brand-rebuilding strategy has just hit a bump in the road.

I just can't get past that tacky "Deborah" tattoo down his forearm. You're a pretty boy who's straight... we get it. That's why you made a movie with 300 oiled-down muscle men. Got it.
Unless he's going to repackage Ico or Shadow of the Colossus, I foresee "epic fail" in the future.

No doubt they'll be derivative, as the man seems incapable of creating anything of his own.

One gets the feeling that from watching a Zack Snyder movie, he wishes he were Hideo Kojima and vice versa. I enjoy the work of both, but I can't say I didn't see this coming. 300 was more of a video game than Tron was.

Good news, Snyder is an expert in creating stunning visuals and several kinds of emotions that would feel perfect in a videogame, his only flaw is that he usually lacks the ability to make you care about the actors in his movies, just as 90% of the videogames out there; So he should be alright...

What ever he's going to direct... half of it is going to be in slow motion.

With the quality of his movies he should have started in games. 300 was a turd, a well polished turd, but a turd none the less.
I see epic fail in his future.

I wish Zack would redo Resident Evil since he a fantastic job with Dawn of the Dead. Perhaps he could work on Dead Space.

I didnt think much of 300 but I thought his The Dawn of the Dead was a great zombie flick, a lots riding on Watchmen as well so could be promising.

What will he make for his first game? A Tetris or a Puzzle quest clone?
Actually, this is good news... for EA. If I had the money and inclination to do something like this, I'd tap Synder for content too. It's a smart move to impress anyone not in video games.
It's just a shame that the Video Game Industry (or VGI for short) can't realize that it already has its Spielbergs and Synders and shouldn't have to go to Hollywood for "good ideas."

You've played the Boom Blox, the game by visionary director Stephen Speilberg, director of Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan. Now play Slow Motion F X by Zack Synder! He made...ummm...300 and that poor Dawn of the Dead remake. We promise you it will totally rock like all of EA's games!

New people and ideas being brought to ye olde gaming world.
I can't at all see how this is a bad thing. If the games suck you can just avoid them.
