EA In Japan Is, Um, Different.
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 7:00 PM on September 29, 2008
Madden, FIFA, NBA Live. Those are the types of games that immediately come to mind when someone says EA. And if not those, how about Medal of Honor, Spore and the upcoming Mirror's Edge. EA has a very strong brand identity. Well, in the West. In Japan, folks don't play Madden.
So take Electronic Arts published DS title Hachikoi. Due out next spring in Japan, the adventure title is developed by Osaka's Neuron-Age and features things like sun tanning — complete with touch pen action. Is this how EA attempts to cater to local tastes?

@dowingba: Nah, I think it'd just be labeled as perverted. However, if it was called "Imagine: having a girlfriend" or "Bewbz" then it'd be perverted shovelware.

Luckily it's on the DS, so they can't charge you for DLC. "Want her to remove her top? 500 MS Points."

I could see the appeal. When you are bored at the beach you can lounge and tan while you play this game and tan there. Or whatever. I'm Spanish I tan in the dark, so whatever.

Madden and NBA Live have always seemed to be niche American games to me. Does the rest of the world play them? I don't even recall when I last saw either on a store shelf here in New Zealand. Makes sense though as we don't even get those sports on TV here.

if they were really trying to take the market by storm they'd buy out the big hitters, or at least start with 'saving' ailing devs (like the recently revived Neko Neko soft). What little art they show doesn't look very good, and the people that buy these kinds of software certainly are not going to fall for this unless they got something really special under their sleeve.
Just for reference, "Kumatanchi" which Bash wrote about recently has hardly even shipped to stores unless they had preorders. And that's for something with huge name recognition (at least on the internet).

And yet you complain.

@KREEPYKRAWLLY: You have a valid point there.
If someone dropped two fricking bombs with the power of two miniature suns to vaporise billions of people and forever screw up the social mentality of a culture.
I mean what are we to compalain that the people have turned out to be sexually liberal, creatively free and generally loopy bat-shit funny? huh? HUH?
seriously. We haven't a high moral horse to stand on. so we should just accept the sun tanning of little girls on a DS and nod our heads sympathetically and smile while we try not to project our guilt on them...
they look SO happy.

@mlubczyk:
*raises hand* guilty...
It's terrible. Boring, cookie-cutter visual novel with a teaspoon of point&click adventure game. I gave it a few weeks, but only ever surfed through endless dialog, and really meaningless inane stuff at that. I was hoping the fighter legends SNK would have a bit more innovation or even humor...
And what's worse, I just saw a trailer for KOF where the SNK logo screen went "doki doki... doki~" (The games is "Dokidoki majo shinpan."

Damn... it is with a mix of regret and optimism that I have to say EA is doing it RIGHT. If MS went down this alley a bit further they could really make the 360 meaningful (but I don't know about long term "Tales of..." effects already...)
But yeah... that's exactly the kind of simple entry-level game to make a good impression on a skeptical Japanese audience IMO; and if it doesn't do well, no one will be surprised or underwhelmed.

Perhaps one of the reasons that EA doesn't do well in Japan is because they refuse to translate the majority of their games?
Tiger Woods and thew new madden both came to Japan complete in all their English glory. For a golf game, not too bad, but for American Football, which almost no Japanese people know the rules of? Inexcusable.
Probably why they got rankings of 4-5 in Famitsu
