News About BF:BC Maps Helps Us Speculate About Zune
Posted by Owen Good at 5:00 AM on September 29, 2008
Battlefield: Bad Company is getting four free multiplayer maps in the next month. That comes from Major Nelson's latest podcast "blogcast." The tidbit is in a 10-minute discussion with Gordon Van Dyke of developer DICE.
The maps are converted single player levels from the game's campaign mode, tuned up for conquest mode, Gordon says.
The rest of the zunecast "blogcast" deals with the GTA IV Live Weekend (about to expire) and about 30 minutes of major Zune pimpage, including a not-so-arch remark about how well it works with the 360 and how "other devices" don't because they "changed their protocol." Who knows, maybe all this cross-marketing is Microsoft tipping its hand toward bringing Zune Marketplace to Xbox Live. Remember, both services are down at the same time, beginning at 12:01 a.m. PDT tomorrow.
Show #294 [Major Nelson, thanks Nathaniel V.]

Zune and Live are both down because they're both on the same servers.

That's something I was thinking about when I got the email that Live and Zune were going down at the same time.Still not interested in a Zune though.

If you get the Zune newsletter, youll notice that the Zune servers are also going down for maintenance with the Xbox Live servers.
Makes you wonder

This game is good and I can't wait for new maps, but in comparison to its big brother, BF2, its squad system and voice chat system is horrible.
I want to be able to create a squad and give them specific orders through the map. I also want to be able to talk to the rest of my team. They should also ditch the artillery garbage for a commander, but then again, that would require major overhaul of half the weapons in the game.

Is there a reason not to use "podcast" other than we are talking about a MS product? It is the name for that particular type of file.

Live Everywhere is coming up. I think GTA IV is going to help push Live Everywhere on the Games For Windows front.

@Tob3z: Actually, as Microsoft has said, the 29th is to help update the Live platform in preperations for the new Xbox Experience. Since Windows Live, Zune, Xbox Live, and any other "Live" branded Microsoft product are all interoperable, it makes sense that all of the products need to be updated to take benefit from one other product's new features.

@boringjob2: Podcasts became popular because someone could download the audio file and then load it to their iPod to take with them, in effect having a show on the go.
It became known as podcast because of the Apple Ipod's and itunes supporting such a feature early on.

@Espiox: I very much doubt that Mircosoft would be that stupid to have 2 services on the same server.

Zune and XBL utilize the same network. You would know this, because as everyone with a 360 should know, back in the last update, they made it so if you were under 18, your account was a child account. I had a child account basically after that update. Couldn't download M rated demos or explicit videos and such. Well on the Zune Marketplace, i couldn't download Parental Advisory songs, aka Explicit content.
Same network guys

I tried to like to this game, I really did. I put in over 100 hours on Battlefield 2: Modern Combat. But COD4 spoiled me on things I just live without anymore in my online shooters:
1. 60 fps. Anything less just looks framey and is hard on my eyes.
2. Mercenary play modes. I don't have an 8 person clan to run with, and I certainly don't want to play against an 8 person clan. I like knowing that I'm only playing against lone players on the other team, not getting overrun by an organized clans. It's more fair this way.
3. Snipers have to be able to kill with one shot to the chest. Even the most powerful rifle in BF:BC can take 2 shots if the enemy is farther than 100 yards away. This makes sniping much harder than it should be and much more frustrating when the target starts bunny-hopping and zig-zagging after the first shot.
Apparently, I'm not alone in these preferences either. COD4 still tops Live in UU. BF:BC isn't even in the top 10.

GAH! No! It does also say Blogcast! That is the most pathetic thing I've seen all week. Grow up, Nelson.

Jeez. You've got to be fucking kidding me. Oh, wait, you are. It says "Podcast" on Nelson's site.

I like the voice chat because I really don't need to hear 11 other people talking at once. They need to let people make their own squads though.

Funny thing is Xbox Live has gone down in the past without affecting the Zune service. You only look stupid when you pretend to have knowledge you don't.

The Zune serers are going to be down for 48 hours rather than Xbox Live's 24 hours. It would be really awesome if Microsoft finally got Live Anywhere off the ground.

@enewtabie(Future LittleBigPlanet Master Creationist):
Mine has definitely grown on me, but the main reason I got it over Apple was the storage size. 80Gig (and a 160 Gig coming) means I don't have to constantly add/remove music, podcasts and videos because of size limitations. Used to have a Zen Micro which was a great MP3 player, but at 4 Gigs there was just no way.

@Espiox:
So why are the Xbox servers going down for no more than 24 hours and Zune is going down for more than that (no more than 48 hours)?
If they're the same, why the differing stories? I'm telling you guys there's something cooking up in Redmond and I think it's gonna be huge...

Leo Laporte on his show This Week in Tech was the first to try to get it to be named a blogcast because it insinuated that everyone had IPods, even though he is a huge Mac fan. That effort pretty much failed and everyone, even the Zune software itself, calls it a podcast. I wonder if that's going to change on the Zune then ...

You know what would really be cool, since the Zune is a closed system like the 360 itself and since they plan on integrating the zune further into the 360 architecture. How bout letting me use my Zune as a 360 storage device as well as my music player.

@NfoRcErX: @ NfoRcErX actually podcasts were around before iPods. The iPod is named after the podcast.

Yeah, I read somewhere before how much M$ hates the word "pod" attached with anything, because of the ubiquity of ipods.
Major e-peen jealousy on the 'Soft's part.

@Xenocide: it used to be called a webcast... back in the days of Segadojo.com's webcast I'd stream on my winamp player... remember when winamp was awesome before AOL bought them?

How many people actually play this game online? I thought the destructible enviorments was a huge dissapointment.
