Soulja Boy Keen On Making Video Games
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 5:00 PM on September 29, 2008
When not making music and making fun of Ice-T, hip-hopper Soulja Boy has a dream: He'd like to go to college. And that's a very admirable dream! Thing is, he's a superstar right now so he'd cause a big ruckus if he went college. People would bug him while he's trying to study and stuff. Guess he should wait for when he's, you know, not famous anymore.
Interesting though to note that Soulja Boy says he wanted to be a flash animator and is interested in getting in the game industry. Hey, why not?! This comes after Soulja Boy gave these insights on Xbox title Braid: "for people who smoke or people drink like if you drink beer and you get drunk or you smoke weed and you get high and you just... anything, like you just get be gettin' fucked up." Which was somewhere along the same lines of our review. Personally, we think it's great that even after becoming a successful recording artist Soulja Boy is thinking about college and education. Good for him.

He may even be good at it, @henri1kk:
A failure? I'm not sure I'd give anyone that title whose launched an album before they were 20.
You may not like his music (I'm not really a fan personally) but the he has creativity and a lot more talent then lots of kids at his age.
Who knows he could be good at making video games. I'm not sure what kind of degree miyamoto has but his imagination was sure enough to make some of the best games released.

When I grow up, I wanna be big and famous, then use my influence to try to get into the gaming industry, just like Soulja Boy!
(Besides the fact that I'm dead serious, I would've never thought I would be uttering those words...)
You're my hero Soulja Boy!

Well, at least he's trying to have a back up plan if his music career slows down and dies. The whole starting up a ruckus thing is probably pretty plausable, people going up to him yelling out "SUPERSOAK THAT OOOOHHHHHH". Teachers trying to crank dat soulja boy...

@Nobuyuki: Now, not to rag on your glowing interpretation of what he said...but i suspect that this story and anything gamers say along the lines of what Nobuyui said is pure waffle and pointless fawning because the guy plays the same games you do, or has spoken as a gamer would (either or, or more).
I doubt anyone would say the same or look twice had he not...complimented (?) Braid.

While overall I dislike his music (although the Travis Barker remix of Soulja Boy is alright) and disagree with his 'beef' with Ice-T (who I think is entirely correct in what he said), I can atolerate him now due to the quote you put up Brian.
"...for people who smoke or people drink like if you drink beer and you get drunk or you smoke weed and you get high and you just... anything, like you just get be gettin' fucked up."
While it kinda enforces all sorts of bad stereotypes I can't help but laugh at the absurdity of that statement.

@Kotaku Commenters Dissing SouljaBoy: I hate to defend SouljaBoy but here goes...
The guy is very successful at what he does. His music may be nonsense to most of us but there is obviously a market for this garbage and he has successfully tapped into it. Even with the majority of the Hip Hop community and others jumping down his throat, he has managed to keep his head way above the water.
If he wants to make video games, more power to him. He knows what's hot right now and he's tapping into that market also.
Lyrically he is a dud, but as a businessman he is savvy.

Good for him. He can now waste his money by joining the ranks of other losers who think making games is fun and cool even though nobody will ever buy them. He can be right up there with Marc Ecko and Fiddy-Cent. Games that can't find publishers and do so poorly they leave the industry for good.
Come and go like them Soulja, so you can go rest in obscurity with them.

@Nkosi868: If "nonsense" was really popular, people would be reading Alice in Wonderland -- not subjecting their ears to aural torture. Besides, those who enjoy this type of "music" have trouble discerning turd from chocolate. Thousands of talented musicians get absolutely no recognition whatsoever (let alone money to fund their projects). The irony of the whole situation is that Soulja Boy isn't even remotely skilled compared to these artists. He should do the whole music industry a favor and retire early.

Now that others have had their say, I can lay a prediction on the future.
BET #1:
-SOB Boy buys his ACT/SAT scores. (No, wait... His publicist does.)
-SOB Boy walks in, and freaks out that you can't just use presets on Cakewalk to make this game!!! (OHNOEZ!)
-SOB Boy freaks out on his first class on the different languages he will have to learn. Since he never seemed to take the time to learn his native language and wasted too much time butchering up the same American English language, he can't make heads from tails on computer jargon, let alone instruction.
-SOB is reminded numerous times by the instructor and peers that you can't just "sample" BGM from other games, as well as their sprites/polygons/vectors. SOB Boy replies "I Got This"
In reality though, what he has is reminiscent of his "music": A pile of $@^@!
BET #2:
-SOB Boy buys a Game creator from a yard sale and releases preset games, and proclaims on YouTube "Yeah, I did this!"
-Gamers of all creeds, consoles, genres, races, species unite, and tear SOB Boy from limb to limb, with his head and hands skewered on a spear to remind people that Darwin does not take kindly to he feeble-minded.

Why do people love him? People like his music, wow, not really hard to understand.
Who has he come out and mocked? I believe his take on Ice T was in defense of a 40+ year old man talking about him, like he was a terrible person, to the media.
He glamorizes materialism, so what, I guess you don't purchase anything you do not need for survival right? I doubt that because you are posting on this site, which means you have a computer. It also shows you enjoy video games, which a person definitely does not need for survival. I guess you are just a hypocrite. As it stands, I have as much respect for his ambition as I do of toddlers that want to become firemen (or firewomen) because their favorite toy is a firetruck (a toy one, in case you were wondering). No disrespect to toddlers, but most of them don't know squat about what it means to be a fireman.

@DTM_Returns: Racism has nothing to do with being liberal, conservative, etc. Your generalization makes you look really ignorant. I've seen a lot more people who comes from the right end of the political spectrum who are very racist, but I'm not going to conclude "conservatives are usually the most racist in their beliefs".

@YHWHMystic: Why should he "retire early" just because you don't like his music? That's a bit selfish if you ask me. I also don't like his music but if there is a market for it, why should he stop making it? It's basic supply and demand. He's not hurting anybody. With your logic, cigarettes and alcohol should also be outlawed. I don't smoke nor do I drink, but if one wants to partake in such actions, it's up to them, not me, you or anyone else to stop them.

@Abno: You don't have to, but liberals typically hold more racist views than conservatives. It might not be that I hate blacks because they are disgusting; no, there racism is in their thoughts that "he can't help stealing, he is black" variety. You can see that here, most of the people here talking about Soulja Boy being stupid or a thug, are the same ones who call George Bush and idiot, hate Christians, and think Obama is a clean, articulate black person.

Imagine the dialog in his games! What he was quoted on, in this article is a good example of the way every urban kid is going to talk in ten years. Don't get me wrong I get mushmouth at times but reading some of the things that come out of and urban influenced kids mouth kills me.
Good luck with this one. I would be amused to see if this was to ever happen.

@DTM_Returns: Well, scientific studies have consistently shown that more people who hold racial biases end up voting for Bush and other conservatives.
"That study found that supporters of President Bush and other conservatives had stronger self-admitted and implicit biases against blacks than liberals did."
I know you'll just say the researchers are the ones who are biased, but other studies got the same results. It's empirical and peer-reviewed.

Ever since his first video on here I assume Soulja Boy was just a closet geek putting on an act to make him seem more cool. This seems to justify my reasoning. I could see Soulja Boy being an intelligent person, the problem is it would ruin his "street cred" earned through his musical career. Mehhh, more power to him if he goes to college

have a new found respect for that man. He opened up what he really wants to do insted of having that average famous life. He wants to have more knowledge in him and do something that he likes to do(Video Games. I dont take offence when he said people are gonna be like "oh man thats gay" b/c in reality people already have that thought. He doesnt which is real good. At least hes honest
I'm nto a fan of his music at all, I dont even listen to rap but I know who he is based on the media.

@DTM_Returns: I don't see any kind of race associated with the term "G," or "thug." For most people that don't know a lot about rap (myself included) I'm sure anyone that dresses like him can be considered a thug, or a G. Those terms mean nothing to me. If they said something race specific, then I can understand you being upset. Instead you've applied a color to these terms to better serve your need to call out racists. And the comment about him and the kindergarten or whatever, I'm sure if anyone reads this guy's lyrics they'd assume he had barely a kindergarten education as well. I tihnk the big argument here is that a lot of people hate rap, and rappers because it isn't in their taste. Rap music is dominated by mostly black people. So therefore making fun of rap or people who rap means we are all racists, right?
I don't like the comment about liberals either becausde you're assuming that racists are liberal, which is not a good form of argument. Don't assume, state your viewpoint and discuss.
@Abno: Liberals are just better at lying to themselves about their racism.

@Terance! - In Before What My Message Says: I think that any musician making what they make is a horrible thing. Rap gets it worst because what rappers do can be argued to take a whole lot less talent, knowledge (on music), time. Then shows like Cribs has to show us what these people spend all of this money on. It's just ridiculous and I can honestly say that these people do not deserve nearly a tenth of what they make. That being said, there is a market for this stuff, and they sell their crud. So all we can do is marvel at how incredible it is that this is the case.
I have known a TON of people who have talked about going to college. That holds zero value until they complete college. It makes him no smarter than the average person. And the whole comment about Braid is just well.....hrm. I can't really say much about it because it is just so silly.
