A Visit to NetDevil
Posted by Brian Crecente at 5:00 AM on September 30, 2008
Adam and I had a chance to run over to NetDevil's office last week to talk with them about their work on the upcoming LEGO massively multiplayer online game LEGO Universe. We also got a tour of their place, including the fabled LEGO library and got some more hands on time with an up-to-the-minute build of Jumpgate Evolution.
In the coming weeks (blame TGS) we'll be posting some in-game videos, hands-on impressions, interviews and tour videos on the site. While LEGO Universe isn't quite playable(by me) yet, producer Ryan Seabury took some time to talk to us about where the game was headed and what we could expect to see. He also showed off his totally kick-arse real-world Starcraft LEGO diorama. Look for that one a bit later today.
In the meantime amuse yourself at my expense:

nice Zelda music from the marketplace area in 'Ocarina of Time'.
one thing you can say about NetDevil from that video is that they ain't actors.

Funny stuff; I'll have to check out the rest this afternoon. I really like the Kotaku graphic at the end of the video. Neat effects.

@Crecente:
That was a funny vid, but how much of that was real, and how much was scripted?
Also, it's funny that the video was about you guys going to get some hands on with Jumpgate, and just bringing it up was as much airtime as that game got. :)

@CapnSpank: auto assault was totally underrated. Sure it had its problems, but I had way more fun with it than any other MMO on the market.
That said, the art direction was brutal, and the relative lack of players made it a whole lot less fun that it could have been.

I can never replay the videos, it always gets forwarded to another one. In this case, a 9 minute interview with one of the LEGO guys.

Brian and Adam:
i'm really glad to see the videos kotaku is putting out now. getting behind the scenes of the place really delivers the experience.
this particular one hits close to home, as i got stuck in denver airport this past feb. en route to GDC. i ended up picking a seat and waiting a good an and a half for a delayed flight with 5 or 6 developers from Net Devil - they were in fact, the first real-deal game developers i ever swapped my new business cards with. you never forget those first times, and seeing where they work now brings it full swing.
kudos for the entertaining report. looking forward for more!

You're a cool guy Brian. The video is made of win, although it could focus a little more on, you know, your visit to Netdevil and games and stuff....instead of a sitcom starring you.
Don't get me wrong though, Sitcoms starring you are awesome!!!1!1

@SpiritBoy: That's easy.. it's heading to:
"WTB GREEN BLOK +12 TO FINISH DEATHGLIDER"
"LFG FARM LEGO CASTLE FOR 4 TILE BLOCKS!"
and ofc:
"U NUB! YOU NEED 5 6x4'S AT 45 DEGREES TO ESCAPE AGGRO..."
Sadly.. :(

Great Ocarina of Time audio...
You should have lit the place on fire, that gets people's attention.
