Eternity's Child Creator Calls It Quits On Calling It Quits
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 3:00 PM on September 30, 2008
Last month, Eternity's Child creator Luc Bernard announced on his official blog that he was leaving the video game business. "I've got enough problems in my personal life to do another game after Eternity's Child," Bernard wrote. Wrong! Luc Bernard has now apparently told game site Wiiware World that he's quit quitting. Besides announcing that Eternity's Child won't see a WiiWare release until later this year, Bernard is working on Eternity's Child 2: Retro Child, a WiiWare title slated for mid-2009. Eternity's Child 2: Retro is based on the cancelled GBA game he was working on and uses traditional side-ways Wii-mote held, button pushing controls. Development for this title is already underway.

I knew he was just throwing a tantrum. It's always like that the 1st time you take criticism to heart like that. Now that he's gotten over himself, he'll be fine. I expect great things from this young man.

Guys, stop being mean. He's an emo artist, not a professional internet troll. I, for one, am glad that he stays and will make new games, even if he is a bit of a drama queen. I don't care what kind of person he is, I care about his games.

@Knoxximus (XBL/PSN): His tantrum was much too extreme and prolonged for it to not be a fundamental aspect of his character - you should have seen his posts on the steam forums. I expect great things from him in the same way I can always expect gold from Jack Thompson and Uwe Boll.

I really wish he would just quit. I was there on Destructoid, and watched him ruin my ability to respect him or his works post-for post. There is honestly enough artsy emo throwback kids out there in the industry who are willing to crank out sidescrollers based on a Dexter's Laboratory pop-art aesthetic that look like they are running in flash. Just spend 20 minutes on Newgrounds. I doubt he would have been missed.
Now I'll have to hear his name in the game-news again, but instead of looking forward to what new things he can contribute to the art we love so much, I'm going to do nothing but sit back and worry about what kind of childish behavior he'll decide to exhibit when this title also bombs based on wiggy jumping physics that need to be patched, or when Nintendo refuses to publish his Holocaust game.
I certainly hope he proves me wrong. Gaming does not need more "professionals" who serve merely to add credibility to the arguement that we're nothing more than people who refuse to grow up.

I didn't realize he was making such a game. Can fault the guy for trying to be educational, but can fault him for firstly thinking that Nintendo will even publish it and secondly for trying to make the Holocaust fun.

A resounding "DOUCHE!" is in order. This guy doesn't need a better programmer - he needs a game designer, and a programmer, and a level designer... So far - all his games (yes, game*S* - he released a cellphone version of Eternity's Child a few years ago - google for it) were complete and utter crap - some of the most poorly designed platformers in existence.

@Mact: NoA hasn't said "no", they've said that they haven't evaluated it, which is obviosuly due to the fact that the game does not exist. I have no doubt at all that Nintendo would allow the game.

Good for him. Just work a bit more on the gameplay, maybe release a beta for testing, and stop being so sensitive to criticisms, and I think he's got a shot at making a good game. He's certainly well-known enough to sell it at least.

@Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.: I always through Burnout 2 was the golden version. Or at least it had the superior crash mechanics, and kazoos in the soundtrack which get louder when you boost. how could that not be win?
Okay maybe i'm a little off topic now.

@L_K_M:
I certainly hope that you're right. I would love for Nintendo to actually allow such a game to exist. I think that the Holocaust game, if treated with the level or maturity and gravity that Bernard promises would not only be a huge leep forward, but would serve as a primary example of the sort of contributions an artist such as he can actually make to our industry. Whereas "Eternity's Child" seemed to reek of wasted potential, the game in question would actually be his true opportunity to shine and distinguish himself.
Now I just worry about his ability to handle the inevitable controversy that such a game would drum up. I am leary trust such an impactful, important, and emotionally charged topic in the hands of a man who admittedly handles adversity with alcohol. What could be a boon for gaming, may also turn into a real blow.
I certainly pray I'm wrong. Perhaps this GBA rehash will be successful and be a re-launch to Bernards gaming career.
