Meet Nintendo's Newest Piece Of Hardware

And no, it's not the new DS. We're expecting confirmation of that later in the week. This, though, this is something a little different, a little smaller, a lot less interesting. Spotted by GAF user Shiggy on OAMI (the pan-European trademark registry), this is an official Nintendo...pedometer. No doubt for use with Wii Fit - or maybe even Wii Fit 2 - since with no external display, it'll obviously be transmitting the data to the Wii. So, an official, branded, Nintendo pedometer! Exciting times we live in, no?

@Mister_Jack: A lot of different things, though FPS' have never really been my forte. I'm not interested in Fable II as I wasn't interested in the first one. GH:WT isn't different enough from RB to justify the purchase (thought I will probably GameFly it at some point) and as for Oblivion 2? I didn't like the first one at all; adding guns to it doesn't fix all the other problems the Oblivion engine has.

A pedometer that appears to require close access to your TV to function, unless it stores data which must be displayed on the TV. I hope it is the former as that would be hilarious.

So.... are there really any people left in the gaming culture that care about Nintendo? They certainly haven't show that they care about us lately, and with the large sacks of money they're making off of things like this, there's no reason for them to care.
It's kind of sad, really. And then Microsoft goes and emulates them, just when I was finally coming around and enjoying my 360...
Sigh. What a horrible time to be a gamer.

Ahhh Pedometer? that have anything to indentify any pedophiles within in your household watching you playing Wiifit. I think every varniable kid gonna need this later. Seeing that alot of people have been "secretly" video taping people while in play with Wiifit.
No actually I know what a Pedometer is, but why would they put this on a Wiifit? Wouldn't you think this would be embedding intot he game already? I think it's a waste for money for consumers and more money for Nintendo. If they don't have one of those on the system.

It's a new online tool to be released with WiiSpeak that counts the number of preteens one can entice and uploads them to a leader board :( It connects to WiiConnect24 and the actual product name for the Pedometer is "WiiDittle".
...yes I know this is in poor taste but we may not have the internet tomorrow so I want to be remembered for this :( ...this is my legacy ...perv jokes? ...oh god!

It actually works with Wii Music. Every stair you climb you can hear a dog bark. Every step you run a cheerleader squeal. Do a leg lift and the cow bells are a ringing. It's really a great integrated product.

While it's obvious that a pedometer's primary intention is to detect when the user steps, it's conceivably possible that a pedometer could be used to track a player's feet when jumping.
A head tracker can also detect if the player is jumping by calibrating a "maximum height" that tells the system how tall you can stand comfortably. After calibration, it knows that if it senses a height any taller than that that you must be jumping.
That being said, a potentially more accurate option than a head tracker for sensing jumping could be a pedometer.
Really though, a 3IRLED-based 6DOF head tracker has more potential functions and is actually a lot cheaper to manufacture, so using a pedometer for this seems impractical.

I know we need a hard drive (well I know I need a hard drive), but at least the company isn't saying, "hey, we know u need more storage, but here's something just as great, IF NOT BETTER!"

I could sort of see this working for gamers if there is grinding involved. So, you create your char and then in order to level him/her up you have to actually take a specific amount of steps in RL. Then this device uploads the recorded data to your Wii and BAM, level up!
Of course the entire track team will become gold farmers after this.

This is truly amazing, their fans keep asking for DVD playback, a hard drive, playing VC titles directly off the memory card, things that make sense, and Nintendo's response is somewhere along the lines of "Yeah yeah that's great... Here, have something else you never asked for! Now give us your money."

Its not like they made a huge announcement for it or anything. Here in Japan there is a large section of pedometers at any electronics store. I think it will be successful for them. That and if you have an interest in owning one and have a wii its pretty cool to be able to have the two interact..

@Cagny: I don't have the time or patience to list hundreds of things. I'll try pretty much anything, though as mentioned, things in the first person are very very low on my list of priorites as I don't enjoy them 99% of the time. Which really sucks for me, as making every game first person is all the rage these days.

I was quite disappointed too. A pedometer!? The hell? I'd totally take a DS remodel over this crap. I'd take "WiiSword" over this, and that's a pretty low standard I'm setting myself to.
And Nintendo does make quality games (and no, I'm not including the Wiisports and of the like), it's the third parties you should be yelling at.
