New Campaign, Characters Coming to The Force Unleashed

LucasArts plans to release new characters and a new single player campaign set in the Jedi Temple as downloadable content for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed in coming months, Force Unleashed executive producer Haden Blackman told Kotaku.
The content will be coming to be the 360 and PS3 version of the game. No specific date or prices have yet been set for the downloadable content.
In the coming months Lucas Arts will release a downloadable content pack featuring additional costumes and character models that can be used to play through the single-player campaign. The new models will include Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ki-Adi-Mundi, and Kit Fisto.
The skins we decided to release were "based on what we heard from fans," Blackman said. "But some were from us. We thought Ki-Adi-Mundi or Kiit Fisto would be exciting to see running around in our game."
While the new skins simply give you a new way to play through the existing content, the new level will be played out on a beefy new map and includes quite a bit more plot.
Due out later this year, the new single-player mission is set in the Jedi Temple on the planet Coruscant. Darth Vader's Secret Apprentice travels to the temple to learn more about his father, and while searching through the rubble of the destroyed building he confronts his inner demons.

The level seems to fit in nicely with a moment in the original game when the Apprentice comes face to face with the ghost of his father. I asked Blackman if that was done deliberately, or if that confrontation would be where players would jump off into the new adventure.
"That was a scene we had written into the script to suggest that the apprentice was getting more into his background and in touch with his childhood," Blackman said. "It's in there to remind the player that the apprentice had come from a jedi father that he wasn't always evil. It coincides nicely with him beginning to question working for Vader."

Blackman said the team talked about having that moment be the jumping off point for the new adventure, but in the end decided it wasn't feasible.
"We wanted players to be able to access it immediately when they download it," he said. "So it's an added level. A separate campaign."
The new campaign's map is smaller than The Force Unleashed giant level on the junk planet Raxis Prime, he said, but it's larger than Cloud City.
"We hope it hits the sweet spot for size."
This new location, which appears in a different form in both the PSP and PS2 versions of the game, was one of about eight that the teamed talked about including in the final game, but didn't make the cut for one reason or another.
"We had a list of 20 locations in our exploration phase," he said. "Those got whittled down. Which ones were viable and which weren't. The temple hung on and hung on and hung on. We had to make cuts right before production and it was one of those."
And Blackman said it's entirely possible that the internal development team working on this new DLC will continue to work on new episodes, that The Force Unleashed could essentially become a delivery system for episodic content.
"We brainstormed a ton of locations," he said. "There's easily another two dozen we could make into levels. This is a good way to continue the story."
"I wouldn't rule out any future content on The Force Unleashed."
This new content also makes the game that much more replayable, something that could potentially help bump it from a rental to a purchase.
"We hope gamers hold onto the game anyway," Blackman said. "There is already a lot of replayability built into it. There is quite a lot of exploration you can do. If you enjoy the story, the gameplay, the first time through, though, you should enjoy this."

This smells of dodgy. While playing through the campaign I notice that there appeared to be a large amount of things cut (plot feeling disjointed or fast tracked in some areas etc.). Then all of 2 weeks after release they anounce a new area for the 360 and PS3 version that includes new plot elements, that just happened to be included in versions of the games that are on platforms that cant make use of DLC and thus micro-transactions?
Way to nickle and dime people for the full version of the game Lucasarts.....

@furiku: Better to do it now than later, imo. Taking longer risks people trading the game in or just forgetting about it altogether.
GTAIV episodic content, I could care less right now. More Mass Effect DLC? That would've been better when I was addicted to the game. I would much much much rather have it now before I shelve the game.

The new level sounds pretty cool, but I'll only bite if they keep the price down. Below 400 points would be nice. As for the costumes, meh.

I guess I'm one of the few who remember insane amount of DLC for old PC games for free that came with a patch to fix bugs. Oh well, I'll probably pick this up once it hits the bargain bin anyway. And who forgot the multiplayer, I still yearn for the good old days of Jedi Knight on the LAN.

That Luke Skywalker model looks like a knob. I want playable Darth Maul, complete with his own play style and animations! Heck they already have his model in there why not use it. And they should make it so that whenever you DO play as him, the only music EVER playing is Duel of the Fates, AKA the only thing that ever rocked about Episode 1.

You know who would do this sort of DLC for Free? EA would that's who. Like they did with Army of Two (new campaign level), Battlefield BC (new mode and new maps), Burnout (over and over again). It's weird but EA are imho handling console DLC incredibly well. It's really making me hang on to titles that would normally have been traded in a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away.

Luke and Obi-Wan are in the PS2, Wii, PSP version of the game, but Kit and Ki-Adi aren't.
Maybe I'm a tool, but I like the idea of episodic content.
Hopefully the skins are a free download, and hopefully one level is no more than 400 points.

The DLC sounds cool...but if everybody just plays like The Apprentice with a different skin then there's really no point to it at all.
If I'm going to buy new characters, they should bring something new to the table.

@mlubczyk: Well, if what they say is true (I haven't played the full package myself), you're getting more gameplay from your completed retail game. And on top of that, the potential payout of episodic content. It sounds to me that, if they had spent more time in development, they would have had an overbaked product. An "$80" experience that potentially could have flopped, and resulted in wasted time and revenue.
If his game bombed at release, fine, no DLC. Everybody go find jobs. But its been proven by sales numbers now that people cared enough to purchase, and the interest in further DLC (beyond this initial run-off content) might be there.

New fee-based DLC this close to the heels of the game is a bit annoying - - that's why I am always glad when reviewers use play time in their scores - - if the game is too short for $60 at release, they need to nail it, because it's obvious that otherwise we're going to get shorter and shorter out-of-the-box experiences for the same charge, and then microtransactions (or not-so-micro-transactions) on top of that.
Having said that, everytime I see 'Kit Fisto' I think that it's a character for the new 'adults only' version of the game.

I hope new campaign DLC becomes a trend. Even though multiplayer is becoming a bigger part of games, I rather play a single player/co-op insted.

That's a pretty cool bonus, except that I can't help thinking this sort of thing should have been included in the game instead of as (presumably) paid DLC. I mean, are the days long gone where stuff like this is just in the game you bought for $60?

See, this is what becomes of DLC, or at least what I was afraid of. Lucasarts, in their infinite wisdom, instead of developing the game for a couple more moths and padding the single player some more, they decide to release a four hour game for $60 then charge you more for the remainder. For what? $80 for an 8-hour game?
Man, I miss my 20 hour long God of War playthroughs. Or my weeks worth of original Half-Life single-player campaigning.

... Uhh I mean I haven't finished the original Campaign yet (love the story but the gameplay could be better). I have to give it back to Blockbuster (rental store) on saturday. Maybe Kotaku can tell me what the DLC is like when its out and I can decide on whether to buy it or rent it again.

As someone who has been a fan of Star Wars since the 70's, I love this idea. Being able to play as Luke. I wonder if the new skins will carry over into the cut scenes. Skywalker as Vader's secrete apprentice. I love the idea. Now that would be something to see play out.

I find it hilarious how console people line up out the door to pay for DLC when the game itself desperately needs to be patched. At least with the PC, the mod community can polish the unfinished game. I'm looking at you KoToR 2.

Maybe by the time it comes out, the price of the game will have dropped enough to where it's reasonable for what you get, then the DLC will make the whole overall length enough to justify the total cost.

1. They should have allowed different lightsaber styles. Maybe that'd almost be worthwhile DLC.
2. Skins? Charging for skins? It doesn't change the game.
3. Charging for one level? It takes like 7-9 hours to beat the game first time through (it did for me, I think 8 actually.) I am glad I rented it and didn't buy it.
4. How about fixing the "default text" bug, or the getting stuck in the environment "feature", or the freezing of the game at random times, or letting me skip the damned movie I saw 6 times before when reloading the level.
5. Yes, playing a bad-ass jedi was cool. Game was worth renting, but I am glad I did not purchase it.

If they make the new chars actual new chars,with new moves,powers,stances and so on I could see the viability of a DLC-pack(that is 1 pack)but if its like the other versions where its just a model swap(yes even for vader although he had a unique moveset in the first level)then its a complete joke.

Awesome! I'll be there for the new DLC. I thought the game was excellent. I think for many people, the source of the glitches are between the couch and the controller. Seriously, I had no problem with the targeting at all once I realized that it was dependent on character orientation rather than the camera.

i wonder how much it'll cost. im actually surprised they are gonna have new levels and character skins as DLC...i honestly wasnt expecting ANY DLC for this game, but im glad they are!
Now all they have to do is fix that HORRIBLE Mission Objectives glitch in the last three levels and i'll be content.

Woo! This is great news. multiple times through the game, I couldnt help but think "Man, it would be awesome just to play as *** with skins." And an extra level/campaign on top of it? I couldnt be more pleased right now.

Okay this is interestingly delightful news but I have 2 pondering questions:
A) Why does that first screenshot look like Luke holding the lightsaber like the Apprentice?
&
B) If that is Kit Fisto in the 2nd picture, how the FUCK did he survive after Revenge of the Sith?
I mean I could swear that a crimson saber penetrated deep within your internal organs can prove to be fatal. *sigh* Oh well, at least we'll have something to look forward to this winter.

I'm a bit surprised the additional character models don't tie in more closely with Lucasfilm's only current project (the Clone Wars television series). Since they're not exactly doing anything that makes the slightest bit of sense canonically (unless you're playing the ghosts of Ki-Adi and Kit, and the precog Luke) I would have liked to see characters they've said will be featured a bit more prominently in the new series, like Plo Koon or Asajj Ventress or even Asohka. Or really throw us a bone and give us a flow-walking Jacen (or Caedus) that's unconcerned about changing the ruined past-- that would be a really, really fun opportunity to use some sweet Force powers.

I am interested but only if there is an incoming patch to fix the majority of the bugs. The technical mis steps in this game really took some fun out of this for me, so patch it first then we can talk DLC.

You know what I hope the next Star Wars game is? The full-on Luke Skywalker/Original Trilogy game that we have never had on next-gen consoles. Forget Knights of the Old Republic/Rogue Squadron/Jedi Knight/Force Unleashed, I want to be Luke and fight Vader on Cloud City, I want to be Han running around the Death Star shooting stormtroopers...

DLC is becoming a nice way for developers to get more cash out of people for less work, well not less work, but on a pound for pound basis, we get less content. In this sense, I completely agree with fELIXADER's comment. "I don't know, to me it feels if that Level, and others coming in the future, are already finished. As already stated, the game is quite short and in my eyes, that isn't such a good thing. I guess I'm just old school when it comes to this kind of thing and would prefer to get a great game rather than a decent game for my money.

I finished TFU on Sith Master the other day and I thought I'd never play it again. This is great news, I really enjoyed it. Hopefully the 360 version will get new achievements!

This game stunk anyhow. Uber repetitive of lame mechanics. Heck, Psi-Ops (from years ago) did a much better execution of force-like powers. (What I wouldn't give for that game on PS3).
Lucasarts needs to hang up it's spurs. I can't think of any game they made that was actually decent beyond the Star Wars branding since Tie-Fighter on the PC. (1992?)

The DLC I really want to see is Duel mode, like we had in Jedi Outcast & Academy. The Wii version has it, with about 15 characters... but that was done by a different studio (and it's not going to look nearly as good)... :/
But I'd play good money to be able to Duel with the force powers and graphics of FU 360.

Remember when you'd beat a game such as this [action adventure] and for all your hard work [20 + hours] you'd be rewarded with new skins, new game+ & possibly a new bonus level or other treats... and the only investment you made was the initial cost [or self respect lost because you begged your buddy to loan you his game] & time. Now you buy the game and buy the bonuses.
No one sees anything wrong with this?
If it's substantial content, like a whole new campaign or some radically altered style of gameplay, yeah, DLC is not viable. But this? C'mon. It's a pack of skins, and some levels.
The Legend Of Zelda had a WHOLE NEW QUEST for you as a bonus when you beat the game. NO EXCUSE IN THIS DAY AND AGE.

I'd prefer it if they released the full game instead of selling it to me in pieces after I already shelled out $60. As much as I liked Force Unleashed, I'm not going to be buying this content. I've never bought add-on content for any game and I never will. At $60 I want the full game. If they want to sell 80% of the game and release the other 20% in pieces the original game needs to come out at $40.

Sucks, A Force based Jedi/Sith game that doesn't allow me to play as Luke, Anakin(Han and Lei's second son because Jacen is a bitch) Mace, Vader or Darth Maul is all fail. Skins don't cut it considering there are a number of different styles and forms to Jedi and Sith combat. Pass. You gets none of my monies....

I was disappointed that the game didn't include different fighting stances. They won't implement them in patches, just let you play dress up with costumes. How about adding some new combos?

I just beat this game last night and was considering selling it back for a points card...little ironic i think. Not sure if the promise of more levels will sway me enough to keep it, especially since the content will probably get pushed back several months and I can probably repurchase the game when its 20 bucks later down the road.

@Lemming: why not? I like Anakin's mentality that the Force is a weapon to be used and controlled. Awesome concept that could lead to Jedi using some nasty Force powers. Instead of Jacen with his "nature nut hippy" concepts. Don't hate...you'd love it if they were in the game as real characters instead of the "cheap ass, lazy, bad development" practice of skins and palette swaps.

It still was the most disappointing Star Wars game I've played in awhile. I'd much rather play Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy again then play a game where I can't even force grab 6 foot tall robot stormtroopers.

lol the Wii version of the game with a simple cheat (menu entered code version) unlocks all the dual mode chars for SP
including luke skywalker. not sure bout the others and i'm to lazy to go look.
and it looks more appropriate since the Wii version doesn't have the backhanded saber wielding too.

Wow, after reading about how they want to release downloadable content, and then reading this comment, it really makes me not want to download anything for this game. This is clear cut content that should have been in the game, but got removed, and now they want to charge for it.
You probably shouldn't admit to fans that something was originally going to be in the game but you decided to get rid of it, so it will be available for download in the future. Unless, of course, that download is free.

the skins are a lot less exciting, but the idea of being able to play through levels that would have otherwise been left on the cutting room floor is pretty awesome.
