Bethesda Donating Amazing Fallout 3 Airstream to Child's Play
Posted by Brian Crecente at 2:00 PM on September 1, 2008
Remember that amazing Fallout 3 Airstream that I just won't shut up about? The one that was parked dead-centre in the middle of Bethesda's Fallout 3 booth?
As I mentioned earlier, the Airstream was completely gutted and refitted with a wonderful blending of 50s and Fallout 3 era knick knacks. The centre piece to the whole thing wasn't the working mini-fridge packed with Nuka Cola, but the flat-screen television installed in the back wall, complete with faux woodgrain framing and a mammoth wall mounted speaker.
Now you should be getting enthused about the Nuclear Airstream too. Turns out that Bethesda plans to donate the amazing piece of schwag to Child's Play following the launch of the game. Can you imagine winning this bad boy and parking it in your front yard for late night gaming sessions. The whole thing, I'm told, even runs on electricity.

wouldn't it just be better to auction this off and donate all the proceeds to Child's Play? that way they could get a lot more stuff...

I guess the whole thing is a write-off now that they donated it.

@NeVeRMoRe666: Yeah. I like the promotions they're doing. They've done a lot and even got someone like me, who was pretty die-hard against the game from the moment they bought the IP, to be really looking forward to it and consider pre-ordering.

@ArtemisFei: @Derangel: I know for a fact that the winning bidder of this item just pulls up to a gas station without even thinking about the price.

@Derangel: Who cares! Armageddon approaches Oct. 28th (or Oct. 31st for our European Friends) :)
Bethesda is really going all out for this game. Good on them. I'm so excited!

Runs on electricity? Imagine the electric bill from it.

Good thing the tax fiasco is done and over with. This might be the the ultimate charity auction that we won't see for a long time.
Good of Bethesda to be so charitable, their next IP will only sell couple millions.

I'm imagining your electricity bill will shoot up...

@PsycheE: Well, considering the fact that an Airstream is a camper trailer, and thus needs to be towed, gas isn't really a concern. Airstreams are small and light enough to be towed by a card even, so you could even tug the thing around with a hybrid if you like.

@vx2: I'm pretty sure Child's Play will take care of the auctioning of it at their annual dinner and auction.

@sandal-hat17: In theory you can tow an airstream with a bicycle. Or so claim the manufacturers.

@Amstrad: Which card, exactly, is strong enough to pull an airstream? The king of clubs? Maybe the jack of spades.
But in all seriousness, that is the coolest giant shiny metal baked potato I've ever seen.

i got to play the demo 2 times each day of pax and saw the panel. the highlight of the whole thing was during the panel when todd howard shot a raiders head off with the railroad gun and the spike-impaled head stuck onto the wall.

This is great to hear! I knew that they'd probably donate it to Child's Play. What a wonderful gift Bethesda. Seriously.

@Amstrad: I meant, the winning bidder will not even care about the electric bill considering it should sell for tens of of thousands of dollars.
There are those that really doesn't care if the gas went up to 10 dollars a gallon.

@MonkeyBiz: You mean wheels! Try pulling anythings weighing more than 100 pounds across the ground without at least rollers and you'll find yourself in a world of trouble.
While this is good of Bethesda, it also shows just how good their marketing machine is. They never release demos, they keep a lot of things about a game secret until after launch (or the public reveals it), and they still manage to hype up games to epic levels. This isn't a critique of Bethesda, but rather a remark on how in awe of their ability to sell games. The auction is a win-win.
