Dragon Quest IX, Final Fantasy XIII Not Playable At Tokyo Game Show
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 5:30 PM on September 8, 2008
Square Enix has announced its Tokyo Game Show plans. The company will be showing lots of its big titles — like Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Dragon Quest IX. But what will simply be in trailer form and what will be playable on the show floor?
That, after the jump as well as the slated release info for Square Enix's big announced titles.
Final Fantasy XIII, 2009 Release, Trailer
Final Fantasy Versus XIII, TBA, Trailer
Final Fantasy Agito XIII, TBA, Trailer
Dragon Quest IX, 2008 Release, Trailer
The 3rd Birthday, TBA, Trailer
Chrono Trigger, 11/27/08, Trailer
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Winter 2008, Trailer, Demo
Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep 2009 Release, Trailer, Demo
Kingdom Hearts Coded, Winter 2008, Trailer
Valkyrie Profile, 10/30/08, Trailer, Demo
DISSIDIA Final Fantasy, 12/18/08, Trailer, Demo
The Last Remnant, 11/20/08, Undecided
Star Ocean 4, Spring 2009, Undecided
Infinite Undiscovery 9/11/08, Trailer
Chocobo and the Magic Picture Book Winter 2008, Trailer, Demo
Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon DS+, 10/30/08, Trailer, Demo
Valkyrie Profile, 10/30/08, Trailer, Demo
Not surprising that FFXIII won't be playable — especially with that demo packaged with Final Fantasy VI Advent Children Complete. Though, it is rather peculiar that Dragon Quest IX won't be playable. That game is on track for 2008 (which might mean fiscal 2008, meaning next Spring), but one would think that Square Enix would have more than a trailer for it. Perhaps that will change closer to the actual show...

I'm curious as to whether FFXIII will be worth the wait. My favorite one is FFX, and my favorite RPG is Chrono Cross...they didn't have nearly the budget (especially CC) but the teams had the visions, and they saw them through. Anymore I feel as if Square is just trying to wow us with technical marvels. I know that sells in Japan, but I have not been impressed by what I've seen so far. It looks too sci-fi, they have a female version of Cloud who was himself a lame character...and there's no story that I can see to get me really interested in it.
I look forward to their efforts to please.

By the time Final Fantasy XIII(any of them) nobody will care anymore, especially in the west. Microsoft didn't just screw Sony with their deal they screwed gamers on both consoles. It should have been enough of a win for them that they got it, to let it release later with some exclusive content. Instead NA and EU will likely not get to play any of them until the end of 2010.
I am hoping that by the time the PS3 version is finished SE just has to get the game out on PS3 gloabally before the 360 version is finished. there is no point in finishing a game and then porting it for another system and wait until the port is finished and then releasing a game that has been done for likely a year or more.
Maybe Final Fantasy versus XIII will be done by the time XIII is finished so we get two reasonably close together.

Real time footage of XIII, however, wouldn't hurt. Speaking from past Squeenix instances, It wasn't until the release of Dragon Quest VIII that we actually got a hands on taste of XII. I would assume that a demo would be released with Star Ocean 4 this spring. Just a thought.

I'm also wondering why DQIX was kept under wraps since they changed the battle system to turn based. They showed off some screens of the new battle system then didn't show the game again for a year.

See, now Square gets a lot of flack for making sequels, but honestly, name 2 major game companies that have a significantly smaller proportion of sequels.
EA?
Blizzard/Vivendi?
Nintendo?
Capcom?
Any company with a large number of games is going to have a lot of sequels. At least Final Fantasy games tend to have different storylines, gameworlds and characters. EA just updates graphics and maybe 2 play mechanics, Blizzard barely changes gameplay and keeps the plot/characters more or less the same and Capcom has released the same 3 games every year since 1986.
Nintendo is probably the only one I can think of that consistently innovates in gameplay, even if their one-note plots and characters are pretty much exactly the same from game to game.
It's silly to call out one company for this kind of behaviour, since every major publisher could be accused of it pretty much equally.

How many times did you think they remade final fantasy 1,2,3,4,5 games more than 3 times. It about time its been 11 years since ff7. I know its a freaking ff7 technical demo there is even one for ff8. How much do you want to bet by TGS 2008. I really do have final fantasy 7 and 8 for ps1 in my hands.

@zkotaku: Keep dreaming, fanboy. Of course FF7 will be remade. But it's not going to be this year, next year, or the year after that. It's been said a zillion times that the FF7 video was a tech demo, and a thousand times that the end to FF7CC meant that it was a prequel to FF7, which already exists. Unfortunately. Because it's a terrible game.

From what I know doesn't SE generally limit their demos and whatnot to private screenings? Be it to the press or other people? I doubt they'd put FF or DQ as a playable on TGS as it cam be massacred by the public. That and the shit-storm that would erupt from TGS from the RPG diehards might force TGS to close.
@abigsmurf: I think they'll have a couple. Come to think of it, I think a lot of companies will announce something.
Didn't Sony allude to announcing something "significant" at TGS? I believe it's Jack Trentton who said it...

@Axass: I'm so disappointed in that. We get a glimpse of FFCC: the Crystal Bearers and then .... nothing. For almost two years...nothing. It's sad. This weeks is starting off great. Nintendo releases a useless wifi hookup for Wii when it already has built in Wifi with no mention of external HDD support, no FFXIII playable at TGS which could very well mean more CG trailers which are so useless and still no word on the Crystal Bearers as if it doesn't even exist.

@ego531: @excaliburps: The difference being that, while Capcom may release a new Mega Man, Resident Evil, or Street Fighter sequel regularly, they still take the time to develop new intellectual properties.
My complaint is not with the sequels. I have personal issues with the remakes and spin-offs, but that's not even the core of the issue at hand. The issue is the lack of anything NEW coming out of the company.
I understand that people have gained an attachment to these series and characters, but when does it stop? Square can make money off of anything concerning their hallowed series, so where's the motivation to create anything new anymore? Kingdom Hearts is a perfect example of the Square Enix Syndrome: It was a massive gamble -- using Disney characters and Square characters in an action RPG that tries to take itself seriously? I laughed out loud when I first heard the news. But it was successful, and people loved it. Rather than taking from that experience the idea that people are receptive to new and bold ideas, it's decided to farm the mothergoofing poop out of the Kingdom Hearts franchise until it's indistinguishable from what made the first game so fun to play.
When Square makes new things, they are usually accepted and adored by fans. Final Fantasy Tactics. Xenogears. Seiken Densetsu. Freaking Chrono Trigger, one of the most respected and loved role playing games of all time. Even the recent The World Ends With You is generally acclaimed by fans. Sure, you have a few Bouncers and a few Unlimited SAGAs, but those are the skinned knees of game development: You put on a band-aid and move on. You don't go rock yourself to sleep in your Final Fantasy closet, only removing yourself when you need to dump some trash.
Admittedly, Square has gotten much better about new properties lately. Unfortunately, that's after considerable fan whining and we've still only got a miserly handful of new properties afloat on a sea of things we've seen before a million times. From a company that made itself on a gamble, their company's Final Fantasy, to a company that seems almost completely unwilling to gamble despite the fact that it's got a majority of the console-owning world eating from the palm of their hands.
I don't hate Square. Far from it. I love them so much that I want them to do more.

@Crosswayboy:
@Johnny_Under: Square has *always* been making new properties. They make just as many as all those other companies you just gave a free pass to. Except every time they make something that isn't a brand new Final Fantasy game, you get people like Crosswayboy bitching that they need to stop being "lazy" and make more Final Fantasy games. If Infinite Undiscovery bombs, you know exactly who to blame for Square continuing to make Final Fantasy games.
Oh, and it's funny you bring up Kingdom Hearts. There was about a three year gap between the firs ttwo parts, several of which had no news whatsoever. The fandom complained the Square was abandoning a core franchise. They're doing it again because it's been a few years since a new entry in the franchise. Then there's the people in your camp that seem to think that *any* sequels is somehow milking the franchise.
Oh, and how about the fun internet reversal on Chrono Trigger? Years on end of people griping that Chrono Trigger was "abandoned" and missing, about 12 hours of pure internet joy when they announced the DS port, and then right back to bitching without missing a beat that Square is milking a franchise.
Of course, the games still sell like never before, so clearly the people on the internet are not representative of people who, you know, actually like to play video games. SO maybe Square is right to keep on plugging their ears because they seem to make a lot of money ignoring the whiners. Oh I'm sorry, I mean "ignoring the hardcore in favor of the lowly casual gamers".

@somarix: do you want FF7 on a freaking fucked-up NDS ?! Because that's about how much resources Square can spare on a remake.
I doubt square would take their most preicous game and make it less res and lower qauilty that its orginal, they fact the use the DS for remakes is coz they are remake "OLD" Nintendo Sqaure classics ... think lad think ... ¬_¬ its not a case of "lack of reasources" have u seen the amount of games by sqaure that come out in japan but never to the west .. its makes them their money dont worry they are wealthy gits and just sitting there as the nintendo of rpgs and emo kids with big swords
I am interested in Kingdom Hearts stuff never made disney so interesting before ... and i guess FF13 but thats coz its Final Fantasy the name sells itself. But Dragon Quest 9 .... not needed, time for Akira "I am gunna sancation the worst Game Movie since Super Mario Bros with DragonballZ" Toyimariesbnsjfd (forgot the rest of his name), I wanna know where the info for The world ends with you atleast its different game play from the usual and tbh i really enjoyed it.
I want to love Sqaure but tbh ... they do make it difficult specailly with the lip sync in Infinite Undiscovery ... wot is with them when i character talks it looks like they stutter all the words

@Rebochan:
Never once did I mention the words "casual" or "hardcore" in my post, so thank you for bringing it up. It just wouldn't be a Kotaku thread without it.
As to constantly making new franchises, the only major new franchise to come out of Square Enix before The World Ends With You was Radiata Stories. Before that, Drakengard. Before that, Kingdom Hearts. That, to me, does not constitute a constant stream of new titles. You'll also notice that, in the gap between Kingdom Hearts and The World Ends With You, two of those games got sequels.
We could count non-games, but as much as I love wine, I don't find it to be a deep and engaging gaming experience.
Kingdom Hearts sequels: I don't believe that making a sequel to a game constitutes as milking a franchise. I do, however, consider making three separate titles within the same game universe at the SAME TIME as milking a franchise. That also stands for all of the Final Fantasy XIII games.
I'll be purchasing Chrono Trigger DS on day one to show support for the franchise and for the ability to play Chrono Trigger at work or on the can as I see fit. I don't like the fact that I have to purchase it for full price considering that I already own the SNES version, but that's business. Especially if I want Square to ever make a new sequel to the game. Wait, what? Someone wanting something new from Square also wanting a sequel? Say it ain't so!
And contrary to popular belief, I do actually play video games. I play them quite frequently, actually. So frequently, in fact, that I would like more games to play. Something new would be nice.
