First DJ Hero Details: Turntable Controller, Mash-Ups, Guitar Co-Op
Posted by Brian Crecente at 7:00 AM on September 13, 2008
Recent Activision acquisition FreeStyleGames is hard at work on DJ Hero, a music rhythm game that will let gamers scratch to the beat of popular mash-ups with a laptop turntable peripheral, informed sources tell us today.
The game, which has been in development for nearly two years, is expected to hit shelves next summer and will likely include the ability to use Guitar Hero guitars for versus mode face-offs.
The controller, key to the game's success, has been through nearly a half-dozen iterations.
In the latest form, the device looks a lot like a simplified DJ Deck. There is a platter for scratching which will act like the strum toggle on a Guitar Hero guitar. Above the platter are three buttons for sampling. The controller also includes a cross fader and a sound effects dial which will act like the whammy bar in Guitar Hero.
Instead of flowing the musical notes down a guitar neck, DJ Hero will flow the music down and around a virtual record in a half arc. Either left top to middle bottom if you are left handed, or right top to middle bottom if you are right handed.
To play you will have to either hold a sample button and scratch, just hold a button or just scratch as the neon icons flow around the virtual vinyl.
Currently the wireless controller has grooves molded into the bottom so it will sit comfortably in a player's lap, though the team is also looking into legs for the deck so gamers can play while standing up.
The game in its current form features all mash-ups, think Beyonce Vs Jimi Hendrix, 50 cent Vs Beastie Boys. If they can nail the interface and get licensing for the music this could be a mammoth hit. Then again I love mash-ups.
*That's not a picture of the controller.

@Seinosuke: It sounded like you were saying GF is easier than GH or RB because it only has 3 buttons, but GFs 3 button game is a lot harder than both games...by far.

As someone who does not like much rock music, I am so hoping this will include some very nice rap music. With the success of Guitar Hero and Rock Band, the success of a rap/hip-hop game will hopefully have the same success.

I'd really rather play IIDX. Or find a Crackin' DJ machine, which I can guarantee would be more fun still.
And the reason Bemani fans get pissy about RB and GH is because both Harmonix and Activision act like they're the only game in town and that they totally created the genre of music games when all they did was repackage it and release it to the masses.

@Seinosuke:
Difficulty =/= Game quality
that aside, i think GF is pretty offensively difficult at the higher levels. it seems more focused on the strumming, while GH is more focused on fret work. plus the timing aspect really adds an extra level of challenge that made it more difficult for me.
honestly i simply prefer GF due to the music. the GH music doesn't do it for me. i think that's a fair opinion, but im sure people would be happy to disagree with me.

Now all someone needs to make (so DJ Hero eventually becomes like RB and GHWT) with the the Live camera or Eye toy is a break-dancing/popping/locking/etc game. Then after both DJ Hero and Break-dance Hero (working on the name) have 2 or 3 iterations, put them together into "Served Hero" or "It's On Hero".

@Setzer IIDX: Append to that-
Guitar Freaks and it's 3 buttons is infinitely harder than any guitar song yet on RB/GH. Especially GH with it's "Special Ed" size timing window. That's more of an aside though.

First Guitar Freaks and Drummania get raped, and now Beatmania? Good lord, what's next? Konami's already taking care of the Pop'n Music raping with their upcoming XBLA game Beat'n Groovy, so they've already beaten Activision to the punch with that
How about a Jubeat/Ubeat ripoff? Jew Hero?

@Seinosuke: The dig actually lies in the last and first entry of those lines.
Konami has a perfectly good music setup and doesn't bring it to America for over a decade. GH and RB get big and what do they do? They rip off RB and GH instead of just tweaking their own system.
To be fair, yes, Drummania home setup does use the same flat drum set. But hell, I'd still rather see GF/DM come over, add in their Karaoke Revolution magic, and pump out 80+ songs with some Konami Originals. But no, we get 40 covers.
Yeah, I'm pissed at Bemani getting ripped off. But not from Harmonix or RedOctane, but at Konami for ripping themselves off and then gimping it. I'm sick of them treating the American consumer like crap.

It's called a genre, and everyone is entitled to make their own game. Guitar Freaks, Guitar Hero, and Rock Band are all unique games, they just have similar gameplay. @zanzibarlegend: My only concern with that is how well will a game like that sell. Look at the rap charts now, not a lot of rap/rock cross over. I would buy the rap/rock cross over game, but would the masses?
If they do a rap/dj game, make sure that the rap/dj portion are about 80-85% of the game.
Then release the downlodable track packs to feature the cross over. And instead of doing what GH did and make a DJ Hero Run DMC edition, just release a Run DMC add on to the game.
Then again I just have idealistic hopes for video games.

@Xeros606: because a real CDJ-1000 still costs like £800, and you need a pair so that's £1600, plus a mixer? (Pictured here is the 400, but iirc that one sucks.) While this game will be well under £100?
Also were you being ironic or did you seriously just become the 786,000th idi- er, person to use the 'why don't they learn to play a real instrument' argument? Because if you did it seriously then I am going to have to become the 384,729th to come back with the 'so why don't you join the army instead of playing Call of Duty' line.

I have serious doubts on the response times and usability of the turntable controller. I would like to have the player to at least to have the ability to download other tunes as well. Furthermore, not only scratching but also beatmatching.
I mean, scratching on vinyl with a mixer is not the only action that a DJ can do. Again, beatmatching should be incorporated into the game. And for that, other genres of music should be there such as trance.

I'm not saying scratching isn't neat. I'm saying scratching is really hard, and this game basically, my guess, won't be asking you to do any real flares :P
Beatmatching however is consistently rewarding and well within everyone's grasp. All you need is a good sense of rhythm and the ability to listen to more than one thing at a time. Some of the most awesome fun i've had, i think, has been doing a perfect transition from a country western tune into hard drum&bass.
I dunno how you'd build a game around it. But it'd be nice to at least include a MODICUM of what DJing is actually about.

It's weird how these topics always bring out the exactly forty people who read Kotaku and play GF / DM. As a pretty big IIDX fan, though, I'll still say that if the music is good and the system is interesting, then I'll play DJ Hero. What the hell.
Best stuff in GF/DM is the pop-ish-rock stuff - Handsome Jet, Des-Row. I get Hito ni Yasashiku and Mind Your Step! stuck in my head a lot.

As a DJ, I'm not terribly interested in this. But I can see the attraction for people that have no access to a set of decks.
I have to admit that when I first read the headline and looked at the picture that the controller would look exactly like a CDJ-400. D'oh!

@Setzer IIDX: guitar freak was never truly released out here so we had no way of getting it, so activision took the economical route, supply and demand, pay attention in econ kid. As for unoriginality, rock band raised the bar by combining all these elements except for trying to cash out and make seperate instrument games. Either it's call competition, this forces devs to make better quality games, look at rock band 2 and gh: wt! Next thing you know you're going to be calling nba2k, saints row, and gow rip offs of nba, gta, and doom

GF is way harder than GH, DM is WAY harder than RockBand. Just because Guitar Freaks has fewer buttons doesn't mean it's easier. GF has WAY more pick action. It's a different type of play.
Regardless, I'll be looking forward to going up to TGA in Mass for their Street Fighter launch party and enjoying some IIDX-love en masse.
This is truly a shame. This really sounds like a watered-down Beatmania (or, even *gasp* ez2dj)...the shame part comes in Beatmania flopping BIGTIME when it came to US for PS2. Oh well, at least I got a cheap controller out of it!

I am actually very intrigued by this game. I honestly like to diversify my music I listen to and this looks like a nice change of pace. Rock isn't the only music that exists.
I know everyone is entitled to their opinions so I'm not going to use the whole one thing is better than another thing card, instead I just want to reiterate that it's just a nice change of pace.

Sounds similar to a game I designed for my uni class:
[tinypic.com]
I used basically a diagram of the controller for the interface, so that led to a circular interface for the turntables as well.
I also had a few knobs in there just to... you know, make things extra fiddly.

well hopefully they nail the design and all that stuff... though i think it would've been nice to hear that harmonix were the ones developing it since they seem to have experience in music gaming dev'ing under their belts. though maybe the guys activision acquired may be up to snuff.
honestly though, who the hell came up with the title. i really hope it's a working title. i guess they wanted to attract their current base of consumers with the "hero" tag, but i think it kinda makes it spin-offy and cheap (i.e. as if they started putting hero after every instrument and churning it out expecting to make millions)
nonetheless, hopefully it's good.

Lol, check out all the people from "that-site-that shall-not-be-named" =)
I wonder where this will end up.
Are all the comparisons with IIDX justified?
Will it be a totally different game?
A DUMB game?
I want to see pictures of the controller first.
IIDX claims to be a "DJ Simulator" while in reality, it has zero to do with being a DJ. I really wonder how "DJ Hero" will be different and if anything, AT ALL like DJ-ing for real.
Iceman B.
Dexor

@Iceman B.: You have a very good point. The fact is that actual DJing and playing IIDX are completely different. So comparisons like that should end there. Also, the description sounds like it's trying to differentiate it self from IIDX, so, give them some credit for trying NOT to blatantly rip off IIDX, because the sounds of it, they're not.
On other notes, Konami did try to release both beatmania and Guitar Freaks in the US arcades when they came out in Japan, and they flopped here, so I think that told them that their games aren't worth the effort here. On top of that, being angry at Konami of America isn't going to help. Konami of Japan holds all the rights to those Bemani games, and decide on what the US will get. So, my bets is KoA tried talking to KoJ about getting those games back here, they said no, and thus Rock Revolution was born. The unfortunate US home release of IIDX was not the fault of KoA, but of KoJ, where they said "Here is the engine and songs you get, oh, america likes bright purple right?" Plus, that redesigned IIDX controller, which is great, was KoA's doing.
Remember the fabled location testing of IIDX Gold with GF/DM Vsomething? IIDX Gold made it over, and sadly failed, so...yeah, they've tried, and KoJ doesn't think the market in the US is worth it.
Long post is long. :(

@djricekcn: I never got to play that game. Having seen this video, I'm really, really sad about that. *This* (and not beatmania, which I have played and was not what I wanted it to be) is the DJ-type game I want at home.
p.s. Rhythm games are really fun. I'll never get why some people (the serious minority) dislike them. FPSs are kinda dull to me for the most part, but I'm not a "twitch" player. I can still see why some people enjoy them.
/doesn't get why gamers bag on some genres as though one can empirically verify one's opinion.

@Bigfoot: Jeeze any song playing at 400 BPM would give your fingers a workout. These games exist in full in MAME but not all are totally playable, but once they are it'd be great to hook it up to real/function-alike hardware at home (my current MAME machine is setup in the game lounge in our dorm and has a working 4 player quarter in-take but I had to disable it after the RA said all games in the room had to be set free play - still walked away with ~400$ in quarters in 6 days).

Somehow i think that with a title like DJ hero its aimed at degenerates who use ''u'' instead of ''you'', and dont have the time money or intrest or attention span to learn making real music yet act like they are dj legends on their 3 buttoned game.
I cant wait for the first article about a retarded kid with retarded parents who drops out of school for a professional ''dj- hero carreer''.
Yet for some reason i actually do respect Bemani players (I'm not one myself tough no arcade close to me.)But i think that is because of the difficulty level of those games.

Whether you like Guitar Hero or not, they've obviously struck a chord (pun intended) with an audience that can't seem to get enough. Rock music is only one genre they've covered. Adding their take on the DJ culture will be an interesting twist. Perhaps by PS4, we'll see Violin Maestro, or perhaps Jazz Jammer?
