GTAIV DLC Due In November, Two Ten-Hour 'Episodes'
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 9:00 PM on September 4, 2008
According to "sources close to Rockstar North", GTA IV's 360 DLC is still on-track for a Fall release. Specifically, it's on-track for a late November release, which backs up earlier rumours. But wait, there's more! The sources, speaking to Eurogamer, disclose what the DLC will actually be. They say it'll take the form of two ten-hour episodes, both of which will feature new achievements. Could be real, could be not real, if it really is November guess we won't have long to wait to find out.

I think i'm the only person that preferred this game over the others. I never finished any of the other games, i just didn't like them. But i loved this game.
So i'm looking forward to seeing exactly what the content delivered. I'm just concerned about the pricing.
It's going to take a lot of downloads to make back that £50 million!

@CreamSodaSlurpee: I could have sworn rumors were flying around of the PS3 getting DLC too but when the news broke that MS paid $50 million for DLC, I recall reading in an article or two that the deal kept the PS3 from getting it's own content as well (exclusively). GTAIV moved a lot of software but on the hardware front where both were banking on, it failed. So $50 million just looks to have been a waste if this was a 'edge' in moving hardware.

Great. Because if there was one thing GTAIV needed, it was more linear story tacked onto its reward-free, minigame-lacking, stale and lifeless city.
I mean seriously, you couldn't give me a pair of sunglasses for finishing the assassin missions? Maybe a slightly different shade of suit? No guaranteed cop car spawn for vigilante? No ability to purchase rare vehicles for doing the garages? *sigh* Sorry, I'm offtopic, but this game makes me so fucking angry.

@SlashZaku: Yeah, I'm starting to wonder about that rumour. At least for Microsoft's sake, I hope it's false. Not that they can't afford to toss $50 million at a developer, but considering how little it did to boost 360 sales, it suerly wasn't money well spent. But maybe the release of DLC might cause a momentary spike in console sales for few people that didn't buy the game (there's gotta be two or three of them out there).

@CreamSodaSlurpee:
It was a system seller. I bought a 360 just to play this game, more specifically because the 360 was getting the exclusive DLC.
@mwoody:
You have a point there. You don't even get infinate ammo for getting 100%, which has always been a staple of the GTA series.
Two 10 hour episodes is cool enough for me, considering it took me 20 hours to complete the story thats like two new half games.
That said though, i would of preferred a new city like the earlier rumours led me to believe.

@theTOMSTA666: selling "1" system doesn't really qualify it as a system seller. It didn't move hardware on a scale Microsoft and Sony predicted it would.
As for the DLC, I hope it doesn't cost a lot to play it. I was expecting something along the lines of the Oblivion 4 expansion pack. Now that's an expansion pack worth your money.

Well, the best part of DLC is you can download it whenever you feel like it.
Every 360 game I own, i'd play through once (maybe twice) put it away and then come back to it months down the road and work on more achievements. Yes, I don't go for every achievement, I save some for a later date, it's incentive to play more.
I know i'll get the urge again, so when it comes, i'll have new content, and that's just too sweet.

Also the vast expanses of emptiness in the desert which sucks if you wreck your vehicle.

This is....its interesting. Like watching someone trying to swim up a waterfall.
GTA4's DLC IS a major holiday release. The game has sold millions already and it came out during a time period that major releases dont come out. Now here comes the holiday shopping season. What better way for to remind consumers who have yet to have gotten it or who havent made the leap to a next gen console then to provide 20 more hours of gameplay. Thats insane. There are "major" releases this year that wont have 20 hrs worth of gameplay. This is like them announcing a sequel to GTA 4 for November. Gamers will pick it up because anyone who is ravenous enough to buy the big AA titles that are due this holiday like GoW2, will also be looking to score this.
As for GTA not being any good, well everything is subjective. But trust me when I say youre in the very very small minority on this one.

20 hours of new content sounds great. That's almost an entire new game's worth of missions.
MS has already made back almost all of their $50 million investment in licensing fees. With roughly 5 million units sold on the 360, the licensing fees for the DLC will be pure profit.

@tehFluffz: Well, it wasn't especially the variety in the missions i disliked. I just thought (and i know that i'll get flamed for this) that the game was waiting for the technical leap that the next gen consoles gave it. Even though it was a great technical achievement getting a game the sheer size of GTA onto the Playstation 2, i just couldn't play the game. Big blocks for buildings, bad draw in distances etc.
When i got GTA4 i just felt that finally i could play the game how it was originally envisioned, with a big, living, breathing city. I'm not bothered about jet packs, collecting packages, doing a million and one side quests or anything like that, i just was looking for a great game, and that, in my opinion, is what i got.
All my friends say i'm totally wrong though, they all say it's the weakest in the series. All i know is that i'll never go back and find out.

I played it for 3 days and found out why I traded it in. I won't be hardcore enough to go thru the campaign again, no way. So I got my full monies back no loss. I will get it again in the same fashion when the DLC is released. I just can't love the game the way I "want to really" the game just really really needed co-op campaign. Considering there is an achievement for completing the game in under 30 hours, this new content can be considered a 2nd part of GTAIV.

You what would be nice? If they released more than just two. If they continued to release episodes until the next GTA gets ready to go gold. Release them at a highly affordable price. 2 or 3 bucks each once every month. People would buy them up in order to keep breathing life into the game. Not only that, but I could see people going out and rebuying the game just to be able to play the episodes. Not that it would happen though. No way M$ would let them see it that low.

I love how people who use the term "M$" always have these hair brained schemes that wouldnt be finicially plausible for ANY company, but they use them as proof that Microsoft are evil.
First there is no way Rockstar could produce quality episodic content on a monthly basis. To do so they would have to basically devote their whole dev team to work round the clock and drop any and all current and fututre titles. Secondly EVEN if they did go insane and did that they would not want to sell it at $2 or $3 because then they would go bankrupt, starve and DIE. Thats why it would never happen and thats why you will fail any and all consumer marketing classes and business classes you ever enter.

@iam.gmo: I don't think people quite understand what they mean by exclusive downloadable content. MS paid Rockstar $50 million for exclusive downloadable content. Exclusive in this case, meaning the only version getting any DLC will be the 360 version.
TO be fair, it isn't just the PS3 fanboys that are missing the idea of this "exclusive downloadable content" idea. The recent announcement of Mirror's Edge PS3 version will be getting EXCLUSIVE DLC brought out the 360 fanboys that said the 360 will get their own DLC as well. "They like money don't they" Is the quote I see in every article about exclusive DLC.
You are definately right, these companies do love money. That is why they make these deals for exclusive DLC. Think about GTA IV for a second....Microsoft didn't pay $50 million dollars for exclusive dlc per say. They paid $50 million dollars to ensure the PS3 version DIDN'T get the DLC. Understand what I am saying? Seems like the same thing, but it is and it isn't if you think about it.

$50 million for exclusive DLC for GTA IV.
And some of you fools think that's a bad deal? Let me shine some light up your rectums so you can see for a moment.
Whether people actually buy GTA or not, they will be influenced by the press that MS gets exclusive content to one of the hottest games this generation while the PS3 is left out in the cold. This makes the 360 a more appealing purchase, regardless of if they buy GTA or not, because odds are, GTA won't be the only game like this. (See Fallout 3)
Now, as to the question about the $50 million being worth it, think of it as a commercial. You could get the 360 in the press for months with exclusive DLC, or you could run four 1 minute commercials during the Superbowl.
As a gamer, I sure will enjoy the 20 hours more game to play a lot more than I would 4 minutes worth of commercials.

2. Video Recorder (The new physics allow for humorous things to happen, let us share them)

Mercs 2 made me see this game in a whole new light. I already liked it a lot - first GTA game I ever completed but they really put a lot of effort into the details.
Flying through the windshield after a nasty and other things that really make you appreciate how well the animation system Euphoria and GTA physics system come together for an incredible open world experience. In comparison Mercs 2 feels unfinished and if you compared the physics/animations of both, Mercs 2 feels feels like a last-gen game hastily ported to current-gen hardware. Too bad really since there's a good game in Mercs it just wasn't quite done.

I still think that, give it a year (if anyone even cares by then) and PS3 will get it. By this point though I'm done with this game.

i wont lie, im still bummed about ps3 not getting extra content, but at the same time... i dont really WANT more missions anyways.
i liked the story in GTA, but its a huge game, and i honestly haven't even finished the missions yet.
but, if the 360 version gets like... flamethrowers, or like.. new cars, or something... or an entire co-op campaign.. i am going to be PISSED.

I'm looking forward too it. This game just didn't have as much replay value as the old ones for me so I'm hoping these DLC episodes are good enough to get me back into the game. Just hope they aren't too expensive either.

I was kinda hoping for... crazy new fun features... jetpacks'n stuff. Maybe they'll sneak something interesting in this...
